You get a lotta phone for little money nowadays

  • +11

Top phone for the price. One of the few to support these features: band 28, dual sim and separate slot for microSD.

    • Lenovo p2 is also a great choice

    • +1

Be sure to also check out (and also suggest or vote) on the budget smartphone poll here

    • How are they with Android updates? Motorola of old were terrible with updates.

      • +1

Pretty good IMO, I had the moto 1, 3 and now the 5 from the last deal and updates came through pretty regularly.

      • My Moto X Style is still waiting to get Android 7.0 (if I ever get it), so I would say not great.

        • Something is wrong there. Vodafone pushed out Nougat in July.
          Do you have overseas model/firmware?

        • @manic: Yes haha. Couldn't get it off contract from Voda and then was too slow when they were clearing it out. The G5+ in question is also an OS model so I would think my experience stands?

        • +2

@ilikeradiohead: Can you download an official update image from Motorola? I'm sticking with Xiaomi for now, because they let you do that. You can download an official ROM, then use their updater tool to update it (if you don't want to wait for OTA updates). And they seem fairly okay with updates. Just had another one last week, in fact.

Google need to push out security updates to all Android devices, separate to phone makers' feature updates. I don't think it'll happen anytime soon.

        • I suggest contacting motorola Support and complaining. I also have a Moto X Style that hasn't updated since Feb 2016.

        • @mathew42: Just spoke to online chat. Told them I had a grey import etc.
Expected date is: "You will just receive the update over the air, there's no specific date."

        • @ilikeradiohead: Don't take no for an answer. Be polite, but keep pointing out that you should have the update by now. Too easy for them to fob you off.

Which reminds me that they were supposed to have escalated my query and provided a response by now.

Don't forget NFC too! (as mentioned below)

      • +1

Is this the comment that got you pulled over and fined illumination?

        • +1

Hahaha no I wasn't commenting.. I was catching up on comments. I think I was on page 2… :(

        • +1

@illumination: oh gosh that's horrible. Just reading through the other thread that you made regarding the fine, bad luck mate :'( sorry about the fine, 330 is a lot, hopefully it can be paid by postbillpay ;)
Loving the stacking of all the deals though :)

        • @MathNerd: Haha yea I know it sucks :( but no one to blame but myself. Let's not cry over spilt milk!!

hopefully it can be paid by postbillpay ;)

          You know how I think!

    • Is it a separate slot for microSD or a hybrid slot meaning 2nd sim or microSD?

      • +1

        Separate slot

        • That's an improvement over my Moto Z, don't know why they only add this on the mid range handsets. I guess less size/weight restrictions.

  • Does the code go in after commit to buy in ebay. Just cant see any indication of discount before pulling the trigger

    • you can add to cart without commitment.
That said, the whole site is 10% off so i dont see why it wouldnt.

Great phone for the money, got one for my mum a few weeks ago.

    • Yes it is on the final screen. Note after you add the promo code it will change your paypal 'source' of funds so be careful - I got caught out

      • Well, I pulled the trigger and the price stayed at $309, order completed. Can I seek the expected 10%?

  • +1

Can we use Android Pay on this overseas model?

    • It's got NFC so I don't see why not.
So tempting to upgrade from my OPO that's been giving me issues lately.

      • It's got NFC so I don't see why not.

So these ones have NFC as well as a magnetometer? I thought they had one or the other.

Never mind. I went looking. Only the US model has magnetometer, but has single SIM slot and no NFC.

        • +2

Yes no magnetometer so for some this might be an issue. Some Astronomy and Compass apps do not work for me with this phone. Wish it came with a magnetometer. That's pretty much the only thing of note missing.

        • @Rodo: The ebay listig states Magnetometer. Are you sure?

        • @Major Mess: Not sure about the one from ebay but it appears to be the non-US model. As far as I know, the US model is the only model with a magnetometer. I bought the Australian model and this does not have a magnetometer.

    • If your bank supports it.

  • Does band 28 cover all Australian carriers?

    • Telstra & Optus

    • It has band 28 so it will work with any carriers who use this band.

      • yes, but I didn't know which carriers used band 28.

      • That wasn't the question lol

        • +2

The question didn't make sense, should have asked "Which carriers are using Band 28?" To ask whether a specific band covers all carriers is irrelevant as they all use multiple bands to provide coverage. This device has all standard bands including Band 28.

        • @CLoSeR: Agree that it could've been worded better, but it just sounds like it's asked by someone who doesn't understand technical terms too well which is fair enough.

  • +1

My G4 has been awesome .Dropped it numerous times still without even a crack . My G3 didn't fare quite as well but was also a great phone .
I'll be buying another Motorola G phone when this one eventually dies . I've bought family a couple of Xiaomi phones and while they are good the batteries don't last as long as the brand name phones .

    • +1

Doesn't Xiaomi have bigger battery capacity and screen? I'm looking at Redmi Note 4X now.

      • +1

When I say the xiaomi battery does not last as long I'm talking about the long term . They have great battery life to begin with but really start nose diving after a year . Still for the money …
Personally I'd have my motorola G4 over my wifes Redmi note 3 any day despite the more impressive specs of the Redmi 3 . Feels sturdier with a richer coloured screen not to mention more frequent updates .

        • I love my Redmi Note 3, but after a year of heavy Ingress and Pokemon Go, the battery dies at about 50% now… sad face.

Would be good to see if the Moto's battery is able to maintain its level for longer than one year…

    • Hey can I ask how does it hold up performance wise? Says 4GB ram and I'm guessing with near stock android it should be pretty smooth? SD 625 at 2.0Ghz is on the low end, does it affect multi tasking, anything noticeable?

Also how is the camera, I read that on spec that its got f1.7, pixel size same as galaxy S7. Of course on a youtube test I saw samsung still one. What's your impression, low light ok?

I ask because I had a Moto G2 2nd generation. Great phone, but when I multitasked, like web page open then video, then email and switching around, it got noticeably laggy. Got to the point where if I didn't power it off after end of day sometimes between taps was like a 1sec delay.
Not sure what the problem was, maybe since then anroid ram management has improved.

      • Wifes RN3 still goes fine . I have ordered another power button as it's getting a bit problematic . The screen has been dropped face first twice and has numerous cracks but is surprisingly still functioning . A new screen was about $30 from Aliexpress and it's sitting here ready to go . my sons Redmi is the smaller non note model and the battery on that behaves very strangely and it's only about 8 months old . Theres no sim in it and he just uses it for games and only gets used for a couple of hours a week usually . He'll turn it off with %90 battery but when he turns it back on it will only show 50% .
Hes enjoyed it and it cost like $140 at the time for a massively faster phone than what he would of got locally for that sort of money .

  • +3

Price is too good for its specs. The only downside when compared to xiaomi redmi note 4 is the battery. However, this one has NFC where as RN4 does not.

    • It's a trade off, I guess. When I got my Redmi Note, I chose larger battery over a few other bits and bobs on other phones in that price range. I wish the Redmi's supported NFC.

    • +1

I would personally take this over Xiaomi. Though this is really a lot more expensive. This must be one of the better phones with replaceable battery. V20 is the best phone with a replaceable battery from what i can tell.

      • +2

According to GSMArena, this phone's battery is non-removable!

        • +1

Yes, not removable on the G5 Plus.

The plain Moto G5 does seem to have a removable battery.

        • +1

          @pcox:

Yeah my bad, never realised it was only removable on the G5 and not the plus.

        • +1

          @Ronnnie:

No probs. It's a useful differentiation - the model with 'inferior' specs has an additional feature. Batteries do degrade over time I plan on keeping my next phone for a while!

(For my current phone I bought a replacement battery kit off ebay for $10 or so but cosmetically damaged the back - which you don't see with the case on but still. Much easier on a user-serviceable phone.)

    • +1

My G5+ lasts me 2 to 3 days between charges for medium use. What more do you want? I am very happy with this.

  • What's the camera like in this one? When I last had a Moto (The original X) the camera was terrible. Worse than terrible. Have things improved?

    • Just want to ask the same.

    • It will be average; the camera on my Moto Z is also average but it's good enough.

      • thanks for this, I might have to actually get one to replace my wife's busted P9

        • +2

i like Moto phones, seems they haven't been too badly affected by lenovo taking over so its a safe purchase to be honest.

    • +1

I've been impressed with the camera. I've taken some pretty nice photos with it. It takes far better photos than my old Nexus 4.

    • +1

I had a Samsung G5 before this, and a Nexus 4 before that. Both of those took terrible pictures in low light (I am often taking pictures of my kids indoors and the pictures were always rubbish). The G5plus takes much better pictures in comparison.

      • +1

That makes sense. The G5+ at least on paper should be considerably better in low light. Wider aperture, bigger pixels and bigger sensor than those previous phones you mentioned.

  • This vs. the ZTE Axon 7 for $499…

Axon 7 has a bigger and better screen and a high MP camera. Is the Axon 7 worth the extra $200?

Has anyone used both these phones and can comment? Thanks!

    • +1

I'm not really answering your question here, but just note, higher megapixels does not mean better photos. A lot of the time, manufacturers throw these numbers at you, making you think more is better. Take a look at sample photos if photo quality is a determining factor. http://www.digital-photo-secrets.com/tip/333/do-more-megapix…

      • More megapixels can be bad, especially in regards to phones that use tiny sensors. More pixels over a smaller sensor = smaller pixels. Hence why you see arguably the best phone cameras using 12mp sensors. Plus 12 mp is a popular choice because of 4K recording.

        • Re-sample and there should not be much difference.

    • You can get LG G6 dual sim at that price or lower.

      • +1

Not for a while has there been a deal like that… been watching for a while.

Last deal expired within an hour as the store jacked the price.

  • +3

No Compass in this model !

    • Serenity now! Serenity now!

      • +2

Wouldn't no Compass not be good for things such as google maps? when trying to navigate either on foot in a city or in a car?

I know my current phone has a compass and when I took it to Japan having the compass was good because I knew which direction I needed to walk,

        Redmi Note 2

        • +1

But to get the model with compass you're giving up dual sim and NFC. Personally I'd use the latter way more than compass.
You can start walking a few meters without a compass and google maps will show you whether you're going the right or wrong way.

        • That's an interesting one about the compass.. it never really crossed my mind how it would come in handy but that makes sense.

I'm also on a Redmi Note 2 though and I find the phone doesn't tend to know which way I'm facing.

@NigelTufnel: But this would still require you to begin moving before it picks up your direction of travel. Probably no biggie if you're walking but it would definitely be annoying if you're driving.

        • @illumination: I'm an Uber driver and my redmi note 2 has served me well over the almost 2 Years now :)

        • +1

Yes a compass may be handy. Google's pedestrian navigation can be confusing. If there's a 50/50 chance then invariably I walk the wrong way and have to retrace my steps.

"Walk east…" Which way is east? Left and right is all I can handle!

        • +1

@pcox: Exactly what I am having. This is a good phone for its price, however no so good for a driver.

    • Yep, no compass so some Astronomy and Compass apps have not worked for me which is disappointing. Haven't had any issues yet with navigation but I have only used it for driving.

  • Tempting. Is moto still pushing software updates for this phone?

    • Current Android version is 7.0 and security patch level is '1 March 2017' so not that good.

Tempted to go Nokia for my next phone if they prove to be reliable for patches.

      • Yeah not great, especially seeing as I'm on a nexus 5X, and about to go to Oreo. The lag and battery of the 5X is driving me a bit crazy though.

        • I have 5x Android 8.0. No lag.

      • +1

Yeah I got my Dad a Nokia 6. He's on August 2017 right now.

  • RAM should be 3 GB, Can any one confirm the RAM is 4 GB please?

    • -1

      I think you're right. RAM is 3GB.

      • Multiple models. Typcially 3GB memory / 16GB storage or 4GB memory / 32 GB storage.

    • Having received my G5+ from QD last week, it is as described 4GB/32GB.

Only way to be sure is the Model Number plus Software Channel, in this case it is XT1685 + retapac (Retail Asia Pacific).

      • Confirm, also received mine from qd last week and it's definitely 4gb

  • Bought 1 a week ago from this seller definately 4Gb ram. Love this phone

  • +1

I bought this phone from QD two weeks ago. It came two days after the predicted delivery time, which I was OK with as when I questioned through eBay why I hadn't heard anything from them about it being sent they apologised and sent a free screen protector and case for the trouble. Note the charger you are sent is not for Australian power outlets but they send a travel adapter with it. I plug the cord into my iPhone USB charger and works fine but no Turbo Charge without the Motorola brand charger (that I know of). Yet to try the Motorola charger with the travel adapter to see if it does Turbo Charge, and can't find anywhere online that sells the Australian model charger to allow Turbo Charge.

    • no Turbo Charge without the Motorola brand charger (that I know of)

Turbo charge is Motorolo's brand name for QC2.0.

      • +2

Correct, Turbo Charge works fine with my Tronsmart QC 2.0 charger.

  • This listing is currently undergoing maintenance, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.???

    • Where do you enter the 10% 'PAINT' code after you have added this item to your Cart?

      • Oh, just realized how the $75 min spend ebay code works. Disregard my above comment.

    • Heres the phone spec's for this model, no idea why the seller hasn't listed a description ..

      http://www.phonemore.com/motorola-moto-g5-plus-xt1685-32gb/s…

      • but this one has a 4gb ram

        • Yep that is what happens on third party sites. Probably copied from another site, copied from another site. A bit like how the New Testament was written.

        • @Major Mess: What they did was use the specs from the EU version of the XT1685 which only comes in 3GB/32GB configuration, they don't bother looking across the manufacturer's other regional sites to verify specs.

  • Hi Guys,

Sorry for my ignorance but does this phone work on Amaysim (4g Optus network)

    Thanks

    Colin

    • +1

      Yes.
