Just for the computer illiterate like myself what are the main differences between this and an E470 at $835?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/323048

    • +1

T series laptops have been known for far superior build quality compared to E series, it's designed for mobility, durability with all day battery life. Commonly used in enterprise organisation, with impressive collection of 12 military-grade certification tests (MIL-STD 810G) which covers a wide variety of system threats including humidity, high vibration, mechanical shock, low and high temperatures, high altitudes, temperature shock, and sand test. Most certainly the better option if you are using for professional work, or if you need thinner/lighter laptop with better battery life.

As an ex IBMer i've had about 9 different T series laptops over the years. I now have an E570. I can tell you the T series is no better built than the E series. (They are all built well) Maybe once apon a time before Lenovo bought them (5+yrs ago i think) they were tougher, but not now. They all come out of the same factory with same parts inside. It's just the design and a few extra features that T series have. IMO, save your money..

    • graphic card is better on e470

    • +2

The components such as RAM, CPU, SSD, etc are very similar if not the same.

However, there are significant differences when it comes to durability which is important for corporate and some users, too.

      Things like:
      * Water-draining keyboard
      * Magnesium chassis that allows to survive drops
      * Roll cage to protect screen and internals
      * Better keyboards (they look the same but T/X/P series are much better)
      * Lighter chassis due to better materials.
      * Coverage with peripherals/accessories, for example docking stations etc.
      * For corporations options such as vPro
      * Dual batteries with ability to swap battery on the go without turning laptop off (PowerBridge)

Also as was pointed out, E-series won't pass MIL-STD 810G tests and generally less durable.

It's much easier to re-sell a t-series thinkpad even after 5 years, there is a stable demand for these machines.

Otherwise if you don't need all of this and need just a standard laptop, E-series is not a bad choice. Just remember it's closer to consumer-grade stuff

Speaking of the particular E470 - it's heavier, works less on battery, not capable of driving many external displays and no support for external 4k or even 2k displays, doesn't have Thunderbolt 3 so not future-proof, lacks backlit keyooard and materials are worse (ABS plastics versus PPS in the T470)

  • Can I add a second hdd in this laptop? Any guidance would be great.

Doesn't this have 2 batteries- 1 internal and 1 external. The one in specs sound very small

    • The spec only mention the rear removable battery. It should still have the non-removable front 3-cell battery with same capacity as rear one.

    • Yes, if you are not planning to add/use the 4G modem, you can have up to 3 M2 SSDs.

One 2242 M2 SSD in the WWAN slot plus the existing 2280 M2 SSD in the 2.5" slot with factory brackets

Other option is to use an adapter like this https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Adapter-Converter-Suppor… instead of factory-provided 2.5" brackets to put 2 x 2280 M2 SSD and one 2242 M2 SSD in the WWAN slot

All T470 have dual batteries, one is removable and one built-in

      • Thank you for your reply. Is there any guidance material that you might know. I tried google search and YouTube but no luck. I plan to keep the ssd for OS and add a 2tb hdd for data

        • The only document you need is the T470 HMM https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/…

You will need to source a 2242 M2 SSD to fit into the WWAN slot because all SSDs that Lenovo ships from factory are 2280 and won't fit.

Then you place your 2.5" HDD into the 2.5" slot and that's it.

        • @ZloyKrys: thanks. So does that mean I will need a small size (physical) ssd for OS and the ssd that the laptop comes with will need to be removed to accommodate the 2tb hdd

        • @VAA:

correct. Just google for 2280 and 2242 SSD and you will see the difference.

The 2280 drive that comes with the laptop occupies the 2.5" slot so if you need the 2.5" slot for the HDD, you need to remove it. The remaining slot for the SSD is the WWAN slot which is 2242 M2

        • @ZloyKrys: thanks. Time for me to go out hunting for 2242 m2

        • @VAA:

Hi mate, you can for the primary SSD using a SATA 2.5" to mSATA adapter, however you can't use it for the secondary SSD in the WWAN slot because of different form-factor (the WWAN slot accepts 2242 M2 SSDs only

        • @ZloyKrys: thanks. I ordered the laptop today from Lenovo with 256gbssd and want to replace that with 2tb hdd and add ssd to wwan port for OS. Can you suggest one may be a link to the ssd from amazon so I know what to look for as some small ssds have 1 notch and some have 2 and some have 1 but at different position. It is very confusing.

        • @VAA:

This model is known to work in the WWAN slot TS256GMTS400 (Transcend 256gb)

The T470 will accept SATA M2 2242 SSDs (not NVMe), the choice is quite limited with this interface and form-factor

          I also heard that A-Data ASP600NS34-128GM-C works, it's a 128GB drive.

        • @ZloyKrys: thanks. They are hard to find. One surprise to me was the option of getting configuration with ssd in wwan slot in T470p model from Lenovo store. I wish the same option was available in Lenovo au store for T470.

        • @VAA:

Yeah, sometimes I think that the AU branch of Lenovo store is run by morons. For that reason I always buy Thinkpads in US just because I can get config I want plus the resulting price is much better.

        • @ZloyKrys: Hello,

i found the following SSD on Aliexpress with technical details

          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/M-2-NGFF-240GB-256GB-22x42mm…

do you think the 512GB capacity will work?

        • @VAA:

I saw reports in Thinkpad subreddit about 512gb a-data drives that worked. Don't know much about the aliexpress brand tbh

        • @ZloyKrys: thanks

  • 8th intel is on the way

    • If it wasn't, this might not be the price it is.

If you wait for it, you'll pay more and it will be a 5% to 10% (max) increase in speed.

    • +1

While this is true and could be a reason to look for another laptop, the T-series have their refresh cycle in mid-summer around Christmas time and available for purchase later in February or later for some models. So yeah, if you need T-series it's not bad time to buy, if you need latest CPU you might want to try your luck with Dell, they release systems with new CPUs much faster.

  • How much bloatware does Lenovo put in their laptops? I have a SFF desktop from them and it's full of built in software that slows the PC to a crawl.

    • The T-series have Windows 10 Signature Edition pre-installed, it's stock Windows 10 and one app from Lenovo and drivers

      • Can that one app be uninstalled?

Is it a one master app that comes with a bunch of sub apps?

        • I don't recall exactly because I've removed that HDD and replaced with my own SSD and Linux, but I think I'd rather keep it because it allows to update all drivers in one go, including BIOS, etc. It's not a big app and not intrusive as far as I remember.

        • If it's the same as what's in a L470, no bloatware.

    • Absolutely no bloatware at all. I think they specifically call it something. It is perfect.

  • Is it possible to get this price from Lenovo and get the AMEX deal?

    • Amex deal minimum is above price of this.

      • It needs to be for the offer to work.

  • Difference between T470 and T470s?

    • +1

Physical differences: T470s is 14% thinner and 17% lighter than T470.
Keyboard and touchpad: No perceptible differences
Display options: Only 1080p touch and non touch panel for T470. T470s offers further option 1440p non-touch panel.
Performance differences: T470 support max 32GB RAM, T470s support max 20GB RAM. One of T470s memory modules is permanently soldered.
Battery: T470 and T470 both feature front and rear battery. Only T470 offers swappable rear battery with choices of 3+3-cell or 3+6cell battery configs.
      Port selections: same.
Price: Haven't seen similarly specced T470s with this price.

Bought a similar version from them in june. T series kicks the E series in the butt.

Think mine cost $80 more than this so this is a good deal.

The keyboard is amazing and best keyboard I have used on a laptop but such is lenovo. It has the original trackpad and red dot which is what IBM is famous for.

The i7 is very zippy compared with the i5, feels even faster than my desktop.

My only grief is with Lenovo, ordered a 6 cell battery 3 months ago and still yet to receive it.
