  • Too bad it can't be customised. Good price though.

  • w7 pro 32-bit on 4gb ram???

    • +2

you can always change you know, err nvm :D

    • Correct me if I'm wrong but I think we should be entitled to install a 64-bit version of Win 7 on our own, if the EULA permits it.

  • -5

Great price… pity its not a high res screen or else Id be keen… anything short of 1650x is poos

    • +5

You're asking for a lot at this price.

    • +1

Plus add in LED, dual graphics, physics card, 3d screen and glasses and surround Hardon speaker and i'll be just about happy. Only just. Oh and maybe have it at $9.4o less :D

  • +2

Applying coupons to it negates the 40% off :/

But if anyone is in the market for a vostro try
    9HNKM$SBR0G790 3% off

    • +1

For 8% off Vostro Laptops and Desktops until the 28th use:

      G9QWJ6ZMCDPGB2

      • Can't use coupons, once added the price returns to $1066. The coupon overrides the current special.

      • neither of the above coupons work, as the 3% makes the 40% redundant and the 8% coupon is invalid.

  • wow thats a huge cash back. nice price + dell, very nice

  • Deal Breaker for me = no numpad :(

  • just brought myself one… thanks heaps

    • +3

Where did you bring it from?
Or did you buy one (ie "bought myself one", not "bRought myself one")

  • Does anyone know if the Intel 3500 can handle 1080p video? Intel claims so but is this true in reality? I'm thinking it should, it was their older integrated video that couldn't but pretty sure the newer ones are up to the task, in any event just seeking clarification if poss :)

All in all looks like a bargain to me, will probably buy one tomorrow (err, today)

    • The i5 should definitely be up for it (at a guess) considering most CPUs these days can right?

As for the intel, it looks like it. Check this: http://www.intel.com/technology/graphics/gma.htm

      • Thanks, yeah that's the same page I found where it seems to mention 1080p support. I guess because Intel's integrated video isn't too powerful a lot gets passed down to the CPU which in this case is a powerhouse. So I'm inclined to agree with you. Should handle it with relative ease shouldn't it.

        • Yeah exactly. Obviously you dont have the screen to properly show 1080p though so who knows. I'd say so but maybe someone who knows a bit more can chime in.

          • @blaze: Yeah the screen res is only 1366x768 but that doesn't worry me. 1080p looks just fine on my 50" Plasma which is the same res. Maybe my eyes aren't so sharp anymore but for $659 it's hard to see this as a negative. $1400 would be another story however.

Yeah, if anyone else knows for certain about 1080p playability please jump in. I'm assuming it's fine though.

            • +1

@Click_It: I hate the way that most PC laptops are now 16:9, almost makes you want to go Mac to get a decent 16:10 screen with a nice resolution! :p

  • +1

Man that is cheap! This is seriously making me rethink a future macbook pro purchase

PS: According to the coupon "Expires on: Monday, October 18, 2010" so you may want to add that to the original post.

    • Thanks for giving us the expiry date. That gives us a day or 2 to think if our finances can manage the hit. At this price it'd almost be a crime not to buy it I'm thinking :)

  • Is it online price only? Can i go to chadstone and pick up or something?

    • Wait. What? There is a Dell store at Chadstone?

  • +1

    nice one scotty

    • Agreed we can always count on Scotty for the quality Ozb posts… too much COTD chuppa chups and junk to look through nowadays..

      "In Scott I trust"

      • Ha. If you look at my post history of the last year I have been posting crap deals. Way too busy these days to look after OzBargain properly :(

  • +2

its all about the graphics card for me..
and this is no good. Fine if u want it to be a word processor.. but then again and $100 laptop will do that…

  • Even better than the Lenovo G560 deal the other day!

    $779.40 with:

  • guys what kind of battery life you reckon I can get out of this - reasonable battery life?

    • +1

A review I was reading put the battery life at around 4 hours and his laptop had a dedicated nVidia card. Very wishy washy because he didn't state what usage he achieved that figure at but I would think the CPU would be the main drain on battery life here. Apparently Dell are (have?) releasing a 9cell battery for this laptop to vastly improve battery life but it adds a chunk to the bottom.

The only negatives I could really find about this laptop is it's screen doesn't go too far back (120degrees) making it no good for those intending to use it on a stand. For most of us it's a non-issue really.

  • +6

My other half just said to me "I bet if you looked at JB HIFI you'd find similar deals" so to prove her wrong I went and checked (she doesn't know the value of OzBargain like I) - Anyway I couldn't find exact spec matches but the nearest was the Compaq (i3-350, 2GB RAM, Intel 3500) for $877. Then the Samsung & HP albeit with dedicated video, same CPU same RAM comes in at $1138 and $1187. Dedicated video is answered above by buying the $779.40 Dell which then has a superior CPU. So in conclusion I think this laptop is a genuine $300-400 better value than most of the competition right now. That may be a simplistic comparison as there are other variables I hadn't factored in but end of the day it's good value and a brand I trust more than some of the competition minus ASUS.

Suffice to say she now believes me :) Thanks for sharing scotty

  • What a great price! Just purchased one to replace my 4 year old vaio - thanks for the heads up, loving OzBargain!!!!

  • Great deal. Only reservation was the poor reviews re. the battery life, but for the price, you'd expect that. Just bought myself one. Cheers

  • Scotty, you are the man :)

  • +3

don't forget you can get velocity points for dell purchases if you go through the shopandearn store, 4 velocity points per dollar spent.

    • Not being a member I couldn't find out if 2400 odd velocity points would get us anything? If it's worth enough I will otherwise won't bother. Thanks for the heads up none the less.

  • I believe I am not easily satisfied but this seems pretty sweet for its spec. Good work.

  • Is there a specific code that's being applied? Or are they pre-configured models? I want to option the backlit-keyboard!

    • +1

Actually - if you switch to list view, and then click 'Accessorise My Dell' it lists the backlit keyboard as an included option. Hmmmm…. so tempting!

      • I think they may have taken this option down. I can't bring it up as an option at all!

        • Try clicking "3. Electronics and Accessories". It says the backlit keyboard is included.

          • @atlas: i think you are mistaken Atlas , the Backlit keyboard is on the $779.40 one . this one only sais

            Keyboard

Included Internal Dell(TM) Keyboard (English) for BR configuration

            • @bazzazz: Ah I see. Yes I was browsing the $779 one because the link was posted earlier up.

      • eherw does it say backlit keyboard ?

  • +2

I brought this model for $730 back in the last EOFY sale(June). Everything is still working fine as new. It has eSATA, HDMI plugs on the side which you might not normally find on low end laptops.

There's not much difference in speed between the low end i5 and a high end i3 except for a small turbo boost. Has some minor problems with ubuntu linux, but then most things don't work 100% in linux.

  • Great deal. Thanks Scotty.
Do you guys think it is worth the extra $106.92 to upgrade to the 3 year warranty?

    • awesome deal!!

    • +2

I had 4 business lappies from Dell for the last 10 years, and all of them have 3 year warranty. 3 of them had their hard drives replaced. 2 of them motherboard changed. If I am buying one for my work I'll upgrade to 3 year warranty as well.

      • thanks for sharing, Scotty

    • Definitely worth it, especially since it's business warranty (they come to you next day) and the laptop is cheap enough as it is

  • -3

I really wish Dell would stop calling 1366 x 768 a "high definition" display. It's low definition. 1280x800 has been standard on laptops since 2004. They're cutting height and adding width. 1920 x 1080 is "high definition".

Having said that, this is an awesome deal for $659.

    • +2

It's still 720p is it not?
      So it's still HD.

      • -3

Only to plasma manufacturers who insist on calling 720p "HD". Nothing but 1080p is.

Whether this is 'HD' or 'Full HD' is irrelevant on laptops. We're not talking televisions here. Laptops have been stuck on the same standard resolution for over half a decade.

        • +1

Would you reallly want 1080p on a small laptop screen?
Mine is 720p and my mates is 1080p. Running at 1080, Windows is very hard to see and use, where as 720p is perrrrfect.

    • It's HD (720p). It's just not Full HD (1080P).

      • -1

If 1080P is "Full HD" then why do some monitors go up to 2560x1600. That doesn't make any sense.

    • It is actually very hard to get anything that's not 16:9 1366x768 these days, and would be impossible at this price point.

Unless I buy a Studio 15/16. But I prefer Dell's SMB range (with business onsite warranty). Latitude would be too expensive :(

  • Have to agree with the posters here. Good price. Although the 32bit windows 7 and low resolution display is a bit of a dissapointment for an otherwise good spec laptop.

  • So does it have backlit keyboard ?

    • I dont think so

  • +2

One nice thing about the average res on a 15" screen- is that all websites should be very readable.
I often have to scale up pages to make them readable on my hires notebooks.

  • Windows 7 32bit? Is that a mistake?

  • Just bit the bullet and purchased the $779.00 one with dedicated graphics faster cpu and backlit keyboard. At that price nothing even comes close.
Wondering if the COA can be used to install windows 7 64 bit .as all the 64 bit drivers are on their support site.

    • where does it say backlit keyboard?

    • I found it - given there site is having problems are you able to provide the E-Value code for the $779 unit so I can go directly to the bundle? thanks

      • +1
        • thanks bazzazz1

        • I have tried the linked above (website error) and the E-Value code (not found). Is there another link for this? Thanks guys.

      • +1

Just got one, (The upgraded $779 version) and dell site seems to be working fine :)

Tried negotiating with the online sales rep for a different color, didn't budge :( ohh well sucky silver it is then…

PS Backlit Keyboard included in the "Electronic and Accessories" Tab

  • It seems like the link is down- anyone else having this problem?

  • Bought the $779 one as well. I needed a new work laptop :)

  • Can't seem to find the link to the $660 model now? Can someone please post the E-Value number for it or provide a valid link?

    thanks.

  • Just ordered the $660 model now; looked irresistible. Thanks…

don't forget to use buckscoop or similar for %5 cashback (pre tax price)

    • MBC give 7% back but only if you don't use an EPP code. I'm not sure if this discount is counted as an EPP discount? Worth a try anyway I guess.

      • I've never had any dell items track with MBC, only ever had success with buckscoop, so I tend to go via buckscoop even though it's less cashback. I know I can rely on it with a fair degree of certainty

        • I've had two successful MBC rebates with Dell over the last 12 months. They take several months to come through. I think the trick is to not muck about on the Dell website once you have clicked on the link on MBC. Just go there and buy, don't be browsing around the site. Also I don't think that saved shopping carts work with the cashback.
