How does this compare to an iMac?

    • I'm holding out for an 18 core iMac Pro
Which I know I'll scoff at the price and stick with my 🥔

    • The only difference I can see is that this is cheaper 32 times than an Imac.

    • +1

Far better as it doesn't have Mac os

      • +1

If you get behind the menu Apple put on it and ignore the case-insensitive filename blunder and the permissions debacles you can have it looking like BSD in no time.

    • Probably about the same weight.

    • In most cases I can think about, it is much more useful than iMac. And it is sufficient to run almost everything except current games.

  • +6

Of course it's old, but they're actually not that bad for standard office stuff (as long as you're not worried about the power bill).

Had one of these at work for years and runs Chrome, Office, Photoshop, etc just fine as long as you know how memory management works (ie. don't run all of the above at once with 30 browser tabs open).

Absolutely suitable for a lot of uses. Just memory hungry by todays standards, and those HDDs can't be long for the grave…

edit: I also have lots of high end PCs and devices which serve a purpose, just an honest assessment about it's usefulness in 2017.

    • agree, I have 3 similar Dells with SSD, works more than adequate.
I just wish I can have more 4GB RAM, but drivers are too old for multimedia play through home theatre.

  • +2

Would it be capable of running Plex server with 2 1080p stream?

  • +3

Supplier seems quite dodgy. I bought a "Dell Optiplex 9020 USFF i5-4570s QC 2.9Ghz 8GB Ram 128GB SSD Win 10 Pro Desktop", then only hours after purchasing the listing title changes to 500GB HDD and i5-4570 3.2Ghz. I'm not sure how they manage it but eBay isn't even showing the old version, the link to view the version of listing I purchased goes to a 'removed listing'.

I messaged a rep on here AND multiple messages on eBay to confirm I'll receive SSD model, no responses received.

Holding out on down vote as I'm still slightly hopeful, but it looks fishy…

    • You should be able to see the old listing somewhere and somehow. I believe sellers do this because they want to sell something else while also maintaining a high rank in the searches.. If they re-started a new listing, it would probably be back at the bottom until it gets some sales.. so doing a switch when out of stock is nothing out of the ordinary (at least for me).

      • Usually this is correct, but when i click to go to the old listing it says it's been removed.

    • your paypal receipt should show the title of the ad.

    • They also had many typos on others ads. They really need to upload the right specs for the right pc. I've just contacted the rep about this. Hopefully, they will respond.

      • +1

Received a response on eBay now confirming I will receive the correct product. Was holding out on paying until confirmation…

    • You can always see exactly what you ordered. Go into your ebay purchase history, and you can view the exactly listing and description.
I'm sure you will get sent what you ordered. The seller likely changed the description because he finished selling the units that matched the specs you bought.

      • Thats correct, we do change listings and update them as stock spec's and sizes vary.

You will be supplied what ever it is that you had commited to buy. The listing title is exactly what is written on the invoices, and is used to pick stock and build orders.

I'm sorry if there is some confusion in the listing descriptions, everything is done manually and stocks change everyday, so it can get a little mixed up.

Most sellers change active listings, the only way you can see what you purchased is in your purchase history. Noz, is correct there.

The listing title is always the best to go by

        • +1

Thanks for confirmation, have also received confirmation on eBay now.

Wasn't sure at first, I've never before had the 'view the listing you bought' (or whatever it says) button not work before… Was a little confusing.

        • +1

@dyl: Your purchase history, invoice, payment checkout through PayPal will show exactly what it was that you had commited to purchase.

    • Im not sure but I think you got confused with the usff model and sff. While the one here is the
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-9020-SFF-i5-4570-QC…

And keep in mind that the usff is much smaller tham the sff model

    Lost me at no WiFi.

For 80 bucks I'd buy it to (profanity) around with, but I ain't gonna keep it tethered to the modem hidden behind the tele in the lounge.

    • +2

Don't know why my other comment was removed but you can stick in a wifi adapter to overcome this issue…

      • +1

Or just use powerline adapters. I would have bought one of it had hdmi port.

  • Any ideas on using this as a Plex server? Does anyone know whether it would play 1080p ok? I'm guessing decoding x265 would probably be a stretch though.

    • +2

Useful as an office machine, definitely not useful for anything to do with modern video playing/streaming/transcoding/encoding.

Get a cheap Kaby Lake NUC or something. Your power bill will thank you.

  • Can anybody recommend any other cheap ex lease office machines for a similar price and with usabile specs?

Not too old and not too pricey ($199.20 after code)

I still have a Core i5-3570 and it has a lot of punch, even using for games it continues to hold up pretty well.

      • +1

Beware, that's the cut-down USFF version. The SFF versions are better. The MT are the best, though they're large.

        • I agree, those are way too small. Probably has worse perfomance that the normal sff model and the ssf probably has better cooling.

      • Thanks Scrimshaw, missed out on it though.

    • +1

Maybe a slim i3 2120 for $111? It is a few bucks more, but should be faster and run cooler, and the integrated GPU should be able to decode FullHD.

  • +1

I have had one of these for years. But the 780 quad core version.
Im running linux on it though and works a treat.

  • How many PCIE slots does it have?

Ethos only needs 1GB Ram and works perfectly with last five generations of CPU.

    • +1

That $140 pc is a great find (maybe post that as a deal). For $133 your getting a solid perfomaning pc. Perhaps I should replace my 9 year old family pc with that haha. Doesn't come with a os but you can just grab a win10 key off ebay and setup with iso. Also the newer i5 only has slightly better perfomance.

      • Would this be suitable for Plex?
I'm looking for a pc that can store media for Plex

        • +1

It can do Plex… and pretty much anything else a current PC can do, including play games at decent settings and performance.
The SFF variants make for good consoles/TV boxes… much more convenient using Windows rather than Android when it comes to specific programs or tasks that you need doing.

      • +2

Save your $15, you can download and install Windows 10 Pro from Microsoft.com for free. You can even use it free, albeit with a watermark. However, just use the Certificate of Authenticity sticker code on the outside of the Dell's box to enter the license. Voila, free OS!

If you want to gauge how well it performs compared to other PC's with different processor families, see benchmark results (Cinebench r5) if possible. Or better yet, conveniently just look at the history here:

1 - Intel basically had a monopoly on the CPU market in the mid 90's. Yet, they did have the best processors until the Pentium 3.
2 - After the Pentium 3, AMD came with the Athlon-64 which blew them away. Even the Pentium 4's were worse.
3 - Next AMD came out with the Athlon X2 (first dual cores), and Intel followed with the Pentium-D which again was worse. AMD disrupted the market and was going to win, until they became bankrupt by Intel forcing all OEMs to not buy AMD products. There weren't any big innovations from AMD, but Intel pushed the Core 2 Duo.
        4 - There's a HUGE difference in single-core and multi-core (IPC) performance between the Core 2 Duo Conroe (eg E6600) cpu's and the Athlon X2 and the previous Smithfield/Presler Pentium-D cpu's (eg PD830/PD940).
5 - Next Intel stepped up to the Kentsfield Core 2 Quads (eg Q6600), doubling the core count, but you barely got doubling of performance, usually its like x1.5. However, they can still handle full Windows 10 Pro just fine today. There was a refresh, like in the Pentium-D days, to the Yorkfield C2Q's (eg Q8400) but it wasn't much of an upgrade.
6 - Then Intel came out with their new Core-i architecture. Here the Lynnfield Core-i processors (eg i7-860) were a decent upgrade over the Yorkfield's.
7 - Then Intel made another big upgrade, from the old Lynnfield to the new 2011 Sandy Bridge (eg i5-2500k). These chips are almost as fast anything on the market today when it comes to IPC. So when it comes to used PC's these hit a nice sweet spot when it comes to Bang-for-Buck.
8 - The following upgrades to (2012) Ivy Bridge and Haswell (2015) weren't much improvements over Sandy Bridge. The next architecture is 2016's Sky Lake, and its basically like Sandy Bridge (32nm) on a much more efficient 14nm lithography. There's decent performance improvement but that's it.
9 - The next two upgrades are 2017 Kaby Lake which is a rebranded/repackaged Sky Lake. And the 2018 Coff 2017 KBR Kaby Lake Refresh which sees some improvements over Sky Lake, and so 2018 finally feels like a full big step up 7 years later, from the 2011 Sandy Bridge cpu's. However, 2017 Ryzen v1.0 looks like a better cpu than the KLR, so perhaps people/majority should switch camps.

Good work! That i7 for $280 looks interesting.

    • Would any of these allow for extra hdd installed in them easily? I.e. - to make a sudo server for home.

    • +1

Received my Optiplex i7 7010 today, added in a GTX 1050ti and runs games pretty smoothly. Going to change the HDD to an SSD :)

      • Sweet.
        How much was the 1050Ti?

        • +1

Bought it brand new on ebay from "Shopping Express", Originally it was $260 but there was a 20% off code so it came down to $208.

  • Yeah, I have a couple floating around at work…can't say I recommend them, but $80 is a hard one to pass up.

  • They seem to be back in stock.

  • +1

    Back in stock guys

Tempting just to buy 10 so I can feel rich and have a computer lab in my house.

Unnecessary. Just keep using the Bat fidget spinner while focusing on prosperity and spiritual enlightenment.

      • +2

Have to say i took it to school and my friends were very impressed, they are now drawing PJC logos everywhere.

        • +2

          Perfectly understandable.

  • Can't believe how much these still go for, even on special.

That said though, I was spoilt-by pure chance I lucked upon a dozen of these being decommissioned by a shire council.

  • +1

Mine died yesterday. Waiting to hear from the seller

    • Did you run the power supply diagnostic? There's a small button on the back. Instructions in user manual.

      • No i haven't, it powers on ok just doesn't do anything afterwards. It was working then the screen went funny and then nothing.
So i tried installing a video card but still no picture.
I tried both slots with the same result.

With no video card installed it powers on then after a while it powered off. With video card installed it powered on then the power button turns orange and goes no further. Also the HDD light goes off.

        • Okay, sounds motherboard-ish or maybe sata port/cable.

For fun, (may as well amuse oneself until vendor responds) you could try booting optical or USB. Assuming you have a rescue CD or usb handy, then something like Testdisk, Everest or whatever to see what's up…

If it failed so quickly I'd be curious to know why!

        • +1

          @Speckled Jim:

OK first off thanks for taking the time to reply, Turned out to be the RAM. I removed and reinstalled and all is working again now. It was the suggestion of the seller. I should have thought of it myself considering i had the same thing happen with this desktop.

        • No worries, glad it came good for you.
