      Your comment, or the post?

  • $1000 for AWS cloud backup space?

    • +3

No, entire AWS platform. You get storage, compute resources and database storage.
      https://aws.amazon.com/start-now/?sc_ichannel=ha&sc_icampaig…

you only pay for what you use, think of it like a Prepaid mobile plan.

      • +4

That's what I meant. If all I want is somewhere to backup my photos on Glacier, $1000 is going to go a long way. Certainly not spam as suggested by Orpheus.

        • check the charges after 2 years to move out of glacier to elsewhere.. or leave and
          at from your funds…

      • you can port your pre-paid mobile plan if you don't like your provider, but you through your nose (Egress cost) if you want to take your data our of AWS.

Why is this spam? Because it's my first post and wanted to give back to this community after enjoying the bargains for last 6 months? I'm not a tech founder currently but just thought someone who is looking at cloud computing offerings may benefit…anyway up to the community and moderator to decide

Ignore him lito. He's unfortunately a serial 'hater' of good deals. Nice post by the way :)

    • +3

There will always be negative comments from people.

Personally, even though this isn't what I need, this is an excellent deal for people.

I'm glad you posted it, it makes OzB all that much awesome. Keep it up!

SPAM with 2 slices of bread, taste nice ~~ don't over think too much…

    • i can see kids regisring domains getting the credits to run minecraft servers for 2 years

  • Can someone explain to me their billing model?

Is it data in/out or time? Or both?

For instance if I upload 100G how long would they keep it for until they start charging.

It's a Hybrid of all of that, but first you need to choose the type of storage, which would depend on what you're using it for.

The offer many storage services but summing up from what I briefly know from use in a corporate tech environment:

Simple Storage Service (S3) - designed for things that need to be accessible online, i.e. data for a website

Elastic Block Store (EBS) - designed for storage for their EC2 service (EC2 is a virtual server/computer service, EBS is like the hard drive for it)

Glacia storage - designed as cheap long term / archive storage, it is essentially for things you might want someday, but like the name suggests, it's like cold/frozen storage where it takes a long time (relative to other storages) to retrieve.

So answering your question, say if you wanted to use 100GB of S3 storage, it would cost you $2.50 a month. Pricing here

    • +1

its quite interesting and can answer your question.

Data is normally charged out, they rarely charge you for Data coming in. but again it depends on how you want to store and use your data.

if you just want to use S3 as a dropdox replacement then you will be charged for data coming out of it + the type of storage you use S3 for, because there are 3 different types of storage for S3.

EBS is normally used for block storage like storage used for Databases and OSs and that sort of thing its not really made for Dropdox type of file storage. EBS can be quite expensive.

let me know if you want to know more.

Don't worry next time I find a $2 meal deal I'll share that too ;)

  • Awesome.
    Thanks for the tips.

  • +2

Just be careful not to use any heavy computing services because they will eat up this $1000 fairly quickly

    • also the Active Directory network usage charge

    • You don't want to mine Bitcoin on AWS?

  • Thanks OP. applied :)

Always wanted to test out AWS.

    • +4

AWS has a free tiered 1 year plan. You don't need credit to test out AWS.

      • +1

        well….this is OzB and i am greedy…..

  • Is credit card required to sign up?

    • yes looks like it..

  • Thank you very much :)

    Lido woah oh oh oh
    He's for the money
    He's for the show
    Lido's waiting for the go

  • Thanks for sharing OP. This will come in very useful!

  • +1

Thanks just signed up. Been using Amazon route 53 to host our DNS

    • +2

Recently moved OzBargain to Route53 well, as the overage we pay to DNSMadeEasy is more than the monthly plan fee.

  • Just in time. Thanks, OP. Hopefully the 1000 total life time charges is in USD. Might exceed it if it's in AUD.

  • Can you use the s3 storage to host (eg a WordPress site)?

    • +1

You can only host static files/websites on S3. You can't install Wordpress (or anything else) on it. You'll need an EC2 instance for that.

    • +1

If your WordPress site is hosted somewhere else, or on your laptop, you can export a static version, then host entirely in S3, with adding a CloudFront cache in front of S3, making it super snappy.

  • Hey lito are you that lito from cars guide?

    • No I don't use cars guide, cheers

      • cheers mate, I used to work with a guy named Lito :)

  • +4

Serious question: what will you guys be using this for?

    • +2

      JV's pR0n web stream

      • It's it a stream of jv's pron stash or jv himself?

        • his stash is of himself!

  • +2

For those that cares about data sovereignty, AWS stores your data locally onshore in Sydney:
    https://d0.awsstatic.com/whitepapers/compliance/Using_AWS_in…

    • +15

      Damn. I'm out.

      Don't trust those Sydneysiders.

    • +2

Only if that is where you choose the provision the services

  • +1

Does anyone know how long this promo lasts for? Ie/How long until signups close?

  • We just migrated to AWS, can't recommend enough - the possibilities compared to our old cloud services provider are incredible.

    • +1

i use both azure and aws ….. nice thing is aws free tier for testing the platform is 12 months ….. azure free tier is much less time.

      • I think you need to the bizspark route to get the 'free' azure?

      • I found Azure way too complicated to use/manage compared to AWS too

  • Are there any costs if you don't use any of the service?

    • No, just make sure you delete any resources you create and are no longer using.

  • +3

Just be really bloody careful with your api keys and secrets (credentials).
This warning is mostly for the n00bs who will sign up just for the free sh!t.

If you accidentally publish these credentials here, you could be liable for hundreds of thousands of dollars while hackers mine crypto on your account.

One of the reasons I closed my personal aws account.

That said, I wonder how much I could mine with $1000 in EC2 lol

  • Is there much that I have to do after signing up? ie. Will I be getting a phone call to have an interview about how I'm using AWS?

    • +2

Wear a suit and a dress shoe with matching suitcase and be prepared for a panel interview.

    • Most likely. They always call me everytime I signed up on one of their free training.

  • I used my personal domain name, is that okay?

    • +1

      No, expect the police shortly.

      • Do you think bluebo will be on a CBP watchlist by now.

  • Thanks OP. I just created account. Lets see what happens.

  • +11

If only the Australian Bureau of Statistics had seen this deal last year.

    • +1

      lmao

    • Don't be silly, they only use the best GoDaddy Economy shared plan with UNLIMITED bandwidth!

      • +1

I thought that's what IBM upgraded the ATO to use!

    • Didn't Amazon get taken down last year too, albeit for a couple of hours.

  • +1

    hello lambda

  • +1

Could someone please give a practical example or two (in English!) for those of us who are a bit too N0ob to understand what this can be utilised for? I run a Wordpress site for live music bookings, and I get the feeling this might be useful for me.. but I don't get why - lol. Sorry for the N0ob qn :-/

  • This is an absolutely fantastic deal.

  • Can I use the credits for WorkMail?

    • I think the credit is for most services, workspaces, workmail and domain registration, are likely not included

  • Really cool promo, thanks OP. is there an expiry date for this offer?

  • -4

Someone might have asked this question before.

Can I sell my $1000 AWS on the Ozbargain classified section?

I am happy to sell it for $430 (cash or bitcoins).

    • i doubt it - would prob be tied to your acc - but worth a try!

    • So how do you see that working exactly?
What, you hand over your access key to say… your local ISIS branch, so they can run up their servers under your name.
      Hmmm, I dunno…

      • Mate, it was a joke. I needed to laugh and I did after I posted it ;—)

  • +1

Oh my. Awesome deal OP. Huge thanks for sharing.

This is pretty much $1,000 in cash for my business. Just setup AWS to farm out some crazy processor intensive genetics data, which we can't justify spending $$$ in multiple Xeon systems.

  • Thanks OP! pretty much the same as @chickentalon - hopefully free $1000!

  • Thanks Lito,
AWS Signup is already a good deal with access to many components upto the limits of free-tier.
This credit will make it easy to spin-up more and try things out.

  • Thank you OP!

  • A question, has anyone managed to get it to work successfully with Metatrader 4?

If yes, which solution and set-up did you choose?

  • Thanks, Lito, Just a quick question I have a custom domain and associated E-mail but don't have a website at this point. Will this work for me?

  • Great deal. Thanks for posting :)

  • Can you ask for a refund after you get the credit (..) ?

  • has anyone got the credit yet?

    • +1

      no, still waiting for mine.

  • thanks for sharing

  • while $1000 is a lot of credit to blow through, would suggest setting up billing alarms to track your spending.

  • Thank you OP!
