The headphones are currently $199 USD on Amazon so $148 is a very good price for local stock. Reviews seem pretty good, though some say they're a little muddy but that's not exactly surprising considering the name. Probably the best BT cans for this price.

  • +1

Good price for headphones. I wish they had N1 model for this price :)

  • +3

Is this a good price for the pixel?

    • +4

Meh, pixel is the overpriced one. Barely see anyone using it.

      • -1

If hardly anyone buys/uses these, why haven'g google dropped the price to say Xiaomi levels?

        • +23

Because Pixel's are premium products, not mid/entry level like Xiaomi (not a dig at Xiaomi). The only reason you don't see many Pixels is because Australians are sheep for Samsung.

        • +1

          @PainToad:

True, gumtree is filled with ads for used samsung phones.

        • +13

@PainToad: that and Google made a deal with Telstra to restrict it's availability

        • +2

@buckster: actually it was more of a case of Telstra shafting google with their exclusivity business practice which ended up with both getting screwed over.

        • @PainToad: Xiaomi have flagship models too but the warranty and customer support would obviously be lacking

        • @Gimli:

Their "flagships" still aren't in the same league as Apple/Pixel/Galaxy. But, again, they are great value.

      • +3

Wife has the 128 Pixel (non XL). Loves it to bits. But agreed with PainToad, lot of Samsung followers.

      • Wife has had Pixel since launch; it's a great phone with snappy clean interface, excellent camera and always leading the pack with android updates.

Wish they made it in dual-sim. :(

      • Couldn't be happier with mine.

    • +11

I'd say yes. It has the cleanest Android UI (of course), a brilliant camera and solid build quality. Anything much over $800 for a phone is getting up there however.

        • +1

Minimalistic, yes. I wouldn't say its boring. Not as many bells and whistles though your right.

        • I believe the Google Assistant is far better than these so called features you speak of. The pixel launcher is excellent too. Users can also opt into their Beta program to check out the next version of Android. Would be interested to know what exciting feature you enjoy that isn't available on stock Android

        • +4

feature lacking Android out of the box.

How's that Bixby working out for you. Meanwhile, Google Assistant is great.

        • @PainToad:

I get your point… But it's not like you can't access Google assistant on the S8. Hold the home button or say "ok Google" (if you've set that up), more or less the same as a pixel. If you want it as a home screen then it's a simple install of Nova launcher.

        • @4agte: Google assistant can be put on any phone lol

        • @PainToad: who is bixby? Google assistant on S8….

        • @PainToad: Works pretty great on my G6 too, for half the price.

    • Yes, the Pixel is an excellent handset.

  • +13

Only 32gb and no micro sd on the Pixel is a let down considering it still cost $799. 32gb isnt that much these days. The positive is the unlimited cloud, but may be inconvenient as you still need to store apps on the phone which quickly eats up valuable storage and you need internet connection to use the cloud. If buying this phone I will go for the 128gb version.

    • +1

Yeah 64gb imo is the sweet spot. 32gb is like the 256gb of ssd. Basic apps and then some.

That said, I only use 21gb / 32gb in my phone. Photos are all freely stored in google photos and it's unlimited if you use the lower quality.

      • +4

Yeah, I have 32 and it doesn't fill up ….guess it depends how many videos and photos you want handy to force friends to look at but they really aren't interested in.

        • +1

I went on holiday and had to upload and clear photos and videos constantly. Something to consider

      • +2

On the Pixel, it's unlimited storage in their original quality. I remember reading somewhere that this has also trickled down to Nexus phones too.

        • +8

I've been putting all of my old RAW photos from my SLR onto my pixel and backing them up to Google Photos and they are going up at full quality and still unlimited storage.

        • @ebosh: Great idea!

        • @ebosh: OMG. That's a great idea! My wife has a Nexus 5X! Dude! Why didn't I think of that?

Only problem is, I'm on Vivid Wireless, and they only allow 1 Mbps uploads. I have about 1 TB of photos and videos… which will take me about 100+ days. On top of that, while you upload, download speeds are cut down to a nearly impossible speed. It's so bad I have to watch YouTube in 360p.

Probably still worth it if I can save things in original format.

        • @ebosh:

Is there an expiration date for the unlimited storage?

        • +1

@ebosh: OOooo this is very good to know ;) hope they continue this with pixel 2!

        • @jominix: I have no idea to be honest. I would be pretty peeved if it was taken away, but I haven't seen any mention of an expiry

        • @Slave1: I'd love to take the kudus for myself, but I read it somewhere else. It might have been on r/GooglePixel

    • +5

I have the 32gb version, Google Photos is built in on most phones anyway… And you get unlimited high quality storage for everything you upload (including the 4k videos and slow mo) … So I copy my wife's SD card across and upload from my pixel.

Once that's done, run the cleanup tool in the app and it deletes the local copy. Going away on holidays I took 40gb of photos and videos and uploaded them on wifi. I agree that you should go for the 128gb if you take lots of photos away from the internet.

Best Android phone I've ever owned. Only time it reboots is the monthly security updates. Hasn't slowed down in the 8 months I've owned it, battery is 50% at the end of the work day.

      • +1

That's great for the US market but uploading 4K videos is not realistic on Australian connections.

I used to use the high quality storage option on my old phone and I had a 700MB video which takes about 4-5hrs to upload on Australian internet but my phone never held the WiFi stable enough for 5hrs so the connection would be lost at some point during the upload and it would constantly restart the upload. L

The entire time the upload was going it was holding a wifi lock so I ended up with my battery rapidly draining every day and it took me forever to narrow down that it was Google photos causing it.

Had to just move all my stuff off over USB so it wouldn't have anything to try upload. They might've improved the upload process to just resume from where it last got disconnected at some point in the update history but i'm not sure as I don't use the auto backup anymore. I now use OneDrive since you can tell it to do Photos only so that you don't run into that issue.

Edit: just looked at Google photos settings and you can disable videos only for mobile uploads but nothing to restrict it on wifi. Clearly a product only aimed at certain markets with high upload speeds.

        • I feel you. See my post above in response to ebosh. I moved on to a wireless internet connection because my ADSL2+ connection got so bad. I was downloading at 100kbps on a good day, so I was forced to change. Only trouble is, upload speeds are restricted, and while uploading, I can't download anything. Can't even stream YouTube. Might have to take a portable HDD on my next trip overseas just to backup my photos to the cloud, as ridiculous as it sounds.

        • +1

I'm sick of people saying technology should stand still because they don't have high internet speeds. Use 4g. I have 24gb a month, it uploads at 10MB a sec. My NBN is "slow" at 12mbps upload, and free wifi everywhere is about 1-5MB per sec.

I know, lucky me or something, but just because it's not worth it for one, doesn't mean everyone is in the same boat.

Might add that I was using wifi on a cruise ship at 100KBs, which was slow as anything, but leaving it plugged in overnight it managed to slowly get it up there.

        • @ExtremeDavo: I usually go to uni for uploads, stellar speeds :D

        • @maddy1: agreed, I do the same but didn't want to suggest something out of majority reach. 100MBs limited by the physical cabling/router ;)

        • @ExtremeDavo: I bet no one else on that cruise could get an email out while you were uploading those 3 photos for 12 hours! Well done! :)

        • @psdillon: I have no idea how they can charge the amount they do for worse than dial up speeds!

      • I think simply copying over your wife's photos will not result in them being uploaded in max quality. They must be recognised as being taken using the Pixel camera (not sure what checks are in-place, possibly a simple metadata check). Try downloading the uploaded photo from photos.google.com and comparing its filesize to the original photo on your wife's phone. You may find that it has indeed been compressed.

        • They are original. I thought the same initially. To be honest, the compressed quality would be enough as it leaves them untouched if they are under something like 20MP

        • @ExtremeDavo: Just had a look and you are right. Regarding the second point, they do get recompressed regardless (but they try to achieve transparent compression) and photos over 16MP are also downscaled to 16MP.

        • That's what I thought initially, but copied from my PC to my pixel, uploaded, then downloaded from my PC again seem to be identical. Granted they are "only" 16mp Pentax RAW files, but that's pretty good for me

    • Agreed. The 32GB storage on my Nexus 6p is the biggest annoyance for me. 32GB really is a joke nowadays.

      • You probably want to backup your phone to a PC and then the cloud ….loose your phone and restore from the cloud on mobile data could be pricey …..and if you have a PC and backed up the data you can remove clutter ….

        • Yeah I do that regularly. I've got like 16GB of music on the phone, so that doesn't help…If it had a microSD slot, that would be perfect. Not everybody wants to stream their music, Google!

    • +4

This is subjective, not everyone has the same needs as you.

I'm surprised at how much crap people store on their phone that they never use.

      • +2

Yep lots of crap …..if it was junk in their house they would be on tv on " clear my clutter" …… Just like people who hoard crap in their houses ….. But crap on the phone is less on your face …..easier to buy bigger phone than bigger house …..so you clean the house ……can't afford bigger phone …clean the phone.

        • Find: …..
          Replace All: .

          Done. No more Clutter.

In case JB runs out of stock they are $149.99 also on the Sony Store for those interested:
    http://store.sony.com.au/MDRXB950B1B.html

  • Fark, just bought a Pixel from JB for $900 :/

    • +1

Buy another and return with the old invoice

      • But do stores keep track of IMEI numbers for warranty purchases? I know Google is able to identify the place of purchase if you call them up for warranty.

        • +4

Pretty certain that the IMEI is printed on the actual receipt when buying now.

        • +1

          @Slave1: yes it is :)

    • They're usually pretty good if you ask to refund the price difference.

      • Never understood why companies offer this. Nice that they do though.

  • +7

Word is that the Pixel 2 is due rather soon which might have contributed to this price drop for those who are considering the plunge.

    • +1

Pixel 2 ….. Probably $1000 and does the same thing this phone does …..

      • +3

But waterproof, faster, maybe better screen

        • Yeah, I should wait for the Pixel 2.
I cannot see the screen clearly when in the shower and it takes more than a millisecond to load any app. Dissappointing!

        • @dreamz: it'll be easier to beat it in the shower lol

        • @dreamz:the sarcasm is strong in this one

      • Yeah undoubtedly we won't see huge improvements which is always the case nowadays, just wanted to clue people in as to why there may be a price drop.

      • I can't wait for the complaints about pricing.

  • Quite tempting, but I think I'd prefer the cost savings by going an LG G6 instead.

    • I'm still running a G4. My 3rd. After warranty hassles from hell returning the second one (including having my phone plan cancelled without my consent).

      • I bought mine second hand and have dropped it about 15x or more, and even submerged it once. Still going strong after 1.5years lol. Battery is a bit crap atm though. 4hrs SOC now down to about 3hrs soc.

    • +1

      Apples/oranges etc.

      • Yes true, can afford the orange, but not the apple in this case.

    • +1
  • How long till Google stops supporting the Pixel with software updates?

    • -2

Would be a few years at least considering it's still their most current model.

      • +1

Wrong. Being a 'current' model means nothing. Google's support expiry count down (2 years) starts from the day of initial release. Android updates will end October next year. With only security updates continuing for 12 more months.
        https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705

The good news is there'll always be great custom roms.

        • Exactly, usually it's two major revisions. Pixel was released with N/Nougat so under their normal guidelines P will be the last and they tend to release ~Oct.

        • Well there you go. I stand corrected. :)

        • +2

@Slave1: nah you are right. Google guarantee at least 2 years. It doesn't stop after 2 years

        • @borgsta:

Yes you're correct. I know their web page hints differently but if they ceased security updates after 18mths they could find themselves in big trouble with ACCC and customers given the 2 year warranty period.

        • @4agte: Just bought a silver model from JB HiFi a week ago, $950 discounted from $979 - best price I could negotiate. I'm sure I had read on the Google product listing https://store.google.com/product/pixel_phone that the warranty is 2 years, as you say, but found it clearly stated in the Australian warranty document inside the packaging that the Australian warranty is 1 year.

Perhaps the warranty is 2 years if you buy it from Google at full price, $1,079, but not if you buy the Australian product from JB.

        • @borgsta: Have two Google Nexus 5, nearly 3 years old now. Updates stopped after 2 years. Last update now October 2016, and that was a security update. We have manually re-checked repeatedly; no more updates available.
For a company like Google which is so security-conscious, this is a disappointingly early cutoff for security updates.

I believe that a vulnerability has been discovered in the wifi interface. We can expect no patches. Our devices are vulnerable.

        • @lepenseur: I bought one today and saw it advertised with a two year warranty. Person in store also advised me that I should keep receipt because there was a two year warranty.
Had a quick look at the booklet that came with the phone and it said one year warranty. So… All in all I've no idea what's up.

        • @lepenseur:

What do you expect? The phone was released nearly four years ago.

        • @lepenseur:

Install a custom rom. If you can't be bothered using custom ROMs, you shouldn't buy Android devices. It really is that simple.

  • Talking about lack of storage… Remember in the 80s when you could buy a computer with no storage. Those were the days. No need to save a game, just start over. The good old days on systems like the c64. And we even had those programs and games on cassettes, just hit play walk away for a day and find nothing has loaded. nostalgia lol

  • This is a good price for the Pixel. It also got voted best smartphone camera in the world

  • -1
    • According to a Windows mobile site…

      • Plenty of people who have owned both phones and compared them have made the same claims. You can compare the photos for yourself. If you want an objective test, go to gsm arena and use their phone photo comparing tool to compare both phone cameras. Also the author of that article Is an editor on an Android review site.

Also you can compare samples over on dpreview

        https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen…

        • Honest question; is there a place to reliably buy a new 950xl for a reasonable price? I've always been curious about WM and if they can be had for under $300 I'd probably have a look

        • @ebosh:

I don't think you can source it outside of eBay and maybe amazon new now. I personally wouldn't invest too much into that platform. W10m is a failure and ms seems to have given up on mobile. They still push out regular updates, but it's in maintenance mode. The 950 xl is an interesting phone, mainly for continuum and the camera, but that's about it.

    • +1

Wouldn't doubt it. Loved that camera. The rest of the phone ain't worth it though.

    • Probably the only decent feature of the entire phone.
