Still rocking out with my Redmi Note 2 .. =P Bit of a classic but can't fault it !

    • mine is still going gang busters too - only issue is the battery, did you ever buy a replacement battery for yours? I'm still running the dev firmware that was being updated weekly (but hasnt for a month or two lately)

one thing to look for is setup your device on your own DNS server and look at the massive amounts of spying the Chinese are doing on your phone, it's un (profanity) believable

      • +3

Hey ! Yeah I'd say the same .. Battery life.. it sucks!

But for me I use it daily as I'm an Uber driver (It's hooked up to power anyway) I run the stock MIUI on it.. 8 that is.. Apparently 9 will come to it middle of August.. but don't think that will help with battery life

Yes I have spare batteries 2 of them in fact! and neither of them did anything for me in terms of battery performance, all about the same.. this phone won't last longer then a single day without needing charge, I think it's because of the MTK chipset,

China is spying on me ?? =o Not aware of it have not put any blocks in place.. got nothing to interesting to show either lol..

I did try the CM12 builds, they run.. but seem to lag compared to normal stock UI

        • +1

I have a sneaky suspicion that the reason the battery life sucks is because the phone "phones home" hundreds of times an hour to places like chat.apps.xiaomi.com and a bunch of other weird domain names owned by them.

within 10 minutes I had about 100 requests to connect to various xiaomi servers even though I wasn't using the phone itself. also connects to a few xiaomi associated qq.com urls.

I tried CM12 and battery life was greatly improved… but the camera really sucks on the third party firmware and like you said its not as fast and polished as MIUI….

we were meant to be getting android 6.0, but I think Xiaomi are now ignoring that and it's not happening… possibly because of MediaTek

still no other phone company releases updates weekly for phones that came out 4 years ago

when I first got the RN2 the battery was fine it was only until a later update that it really started to suck

        • +4

          @wingwang:

Still using Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 over here too and can also attest to the absolutely terrible battery life. I estimate I need to charge about 3-4 times a day to be able to last properly (gotten used to it). However I've similarly noticed that whilst the battery life really sucks, charging is now ridiculously fast.

Haven't noticed the high volume of traffic contacting "home" but never looked at it to be honest.

I never had a huge issue with the camera although when I look relatively (compared to other phones) I can tell the difference, objectively I find it ok.

I've found it to be quite stable - more stable than at some points in the past.

Still using MIUI myself, but am rooted. Might've tried a custom ROM or 2 back in the day but not anymore. Never bought an extra battery.

Personally I'm not sure what I want to upgrade to next. I had been eyeing Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X for a while, which is still a reasonable option I feel, but I've held off as my RN2 just won't die. But the longer I wait the closer I feel I am to another potential awesome value phone. Xiaomi also just announced the Xiaomi Mi 5X yesterday which also looks really good.

Things I've been considering for my next phone:

          • Dual SIM 4G/3G and microSD slot - although I've come to accept a microSD slot is no longer as crucial
          • Band 28 - even though our RM2 doesn't have this, I've been having terrible reception at home and just kinda wanna see if having band 28 might help even though I do not live in a remote area
          • 5.5" screen - feel like anything smaller just looks too small now!
          • NFC (ideally)

I've considered Motorola G5 Plus which I think satisfies all of that, but for the price of one you could get an alternative phone with different specs.

As a result, the hunt goes on..

Apologies for my essay! Typed a lot longer than I expected..

          Edit:

TLDR: Still using RN2. Sucks now especially battery but still love it. Won't die fully so I'm reluctant to buy new phone and the longer I wait the more I feel there's another really good bang for buck phone around the corner (like our RN2!). Have been considering potential replacements over the past few months such as Leeco LeTV, Lenovo ZUK, Xiaomi RN3/RN4, Motorola G4/G5 Plus, Xiaomi Mi5/Mi6 but still can't decide.

@wingwang: Hey Wing, show Xiaomi your Wang!

        • +3

@illumination: I enjoyed reading your essay. Your grammar, spacing and vocabulary is impeccable. A+

        • @87andcry: Haha uhh I can't tell if you're missing a "/s", but if not then thanks I guess..?

        • @wingwang:

The Redmi 4x already ships with Android 6 Marshmallow with a Nougat 7.01 upgrade announced for the coming months.

Please note this discussion is not the Redmi note model.

      • +1

        I got one too.

The battery life does indeed suck. However I replaced it after about 8 months with a Nohon battery which was good. But again after another 8 months, its dying, although still better than the original Xiaomi battery.

I will likely keep my phone until about next Jan/Feb, which will take me to 2 years and then will upgrade. I'll probably buy another battery this week, to take me through until then.

2 days battery life should be easily achievable with newer phones these days.

  • +2

It's a decent phone for an amazing price, gets the job done. Best thing for me is the awesome battery life of 2-3 days. Performance is very usable, however it has some stutters here and there. Only have one major complaint, and that is that chrome keeps crashing, couldn't solve the problem up to now.

    • +1

I think the major feature is the micro SD slot :)

      • I'm fairly certain all the Redmi phones have microSD slots. Just not their flagships.

        • Could be right, So the Mi 5S doesn't have MicroSD Slot

  • Showing as 169AUD does this need a code?

  • just a few q before I decide to buy:
    - would paypal cover for lost in transit?
    - any mobile networks which this wont work on?

    Thanks OP for the post

    • +8
      • any mobile networks which this wont work on?

yeah it wont work on the Orange CDMA network

      • What about Three 3G?

        • It definitely works on that

        • @Jackson:

So a time machine is included?

        • @PainToad:

Can confirm - phone comes with a Delorean and Mr Fusion

    • Paypal inflates the exchange rate.

      • But still quite reasonable compared to banks. Paypal adds 3% to Interbank trading rates.

        • I think most banks add about 3% too so it's no more reasonable than a bank really.

  • They just released the xaiomi 5X which could be of better value

    • Will the price drop any further on this phone when the 5X starts shipping?

      • better off getting SD 625 redmi 4 if theres a sale on it

    • +2

5.5" v 5" is generally the difference between a phone fitting a shirt pocket or not.

      • Who puts their phone in a shirt pocket? I find the note so much better.

  • will this run poke-no with the new gyms without overheating in 10 minutes?

    • +1

You might have issues with Safety Net depending on the rom.

      • i had no idea what safety net is, but as luck would have it, within a few days of your post my current phone (Bluboo Mini) ceased being able to run Poke-go due to failing safetynet (it had worked for months) so, unfortunately, i now know what you meant. Anywho i bought this phone so im hoping it doesnt have that issue

  • how do you get rid of the default chinese firmware?

    • download the universal rom if it isnt installed already

      http://en.miui.com/download.html

      • +2

        No, no, no.

        Go with https://xiaomi.eu/community/forums/miui-weekly-rom-releases.…

And even if it comes pe-installed, you should still reflash to wipe any potential malware the seller might of snuck in.

        • I have questions.
          * Do these have OTA updates, or do I have to keep flashing?
          * How is this better than the regular ROM? Won't the regular ones get these updates eventually?
          * Isn't it risky being an early adopter?
          * Will this still have all that Chinese spyware?

        • @flaminglemon:

          • Yes they get OTA, though I think they might be full images. I use to use ADM to speed up the downloads and just flash with TWRP.
          • Benifits are here https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/7-7-20-last-miui-8.40847…
          • I guess, I've never heard of major bugs but.
          • That's the point of these ROMs. Not only do they remove some Chinese crap, they actually decompile APK to translate stuff even Xiaomi are to lazy to do. These are much more polished than official ROMs.

These guys have been around for yeaaaaaarrrsss.

        • @PainToad: "So we decided to STOP OTA support at all.. you have to download ROM manually and install via Updater - menu (…) - Select installation package - reboot (You will not loose your data)"

It's great that you can just update via the updater tool. That's handy!

But rooting and flashing is something I haven't done in ages. With my Samsungs, that was pretty easy. With my HTC's, it was painful. So painful it turned me off the whole root and flash thing.

Might do this if I ever replace my Redmi Note 3. I doubt it'll have much resale value, so it'll be perfect for a bit of flashing.

        • Hello PainToad,

What is the process to reflash?

I've haven't done such a thing since jailbraking early editions of the iphone.

Do you have a detailed guide with exact steps so I don't stuff it up?

          Thanks

  • +3

Bought some ceiling lights from this mob once, was missing screws.

    • +2

Because those 'missing screws' were port holes for the hidden cameras ;)

      • Ah. So it was missing the hidden cameras. frostman should go get his money back.

  • +1

This phone is really good, Lasts 4 days easy.

I had wifi connection issues when I got mine and I upgraded OS and it works fine now. Not sure who makes custom roms for them but I will wait and see, the chinese one is decent but I don't trust the chinese with my personal details after the xiaomi scandal a few yrs ago

    • +4

but I don't trust the chinese with my personal details after the xiaomi scandal a few yrs ago

As opposed to good ol' USA (Google,NSA), the protectors of your privacy. Which is why the license agreements for android basically tell you that they own your android device. All of them are crooks. The OS manufacturers. Chipset manufacturers. Phone manufacturers. And the those making apps.

      • -3

Everyone owns us. If you are serious about protecting your privacy stop using the internet and go back to the 1950s.

        • +2

If you are serious about protecting your privacy stop using the internet and go back to the 1950s.

So what you're saying - essentially - is that we should put up with taxpayer-funded dragnet surveillance as a condition for being allowed to use the internet? If we want to use the intenet in TVs, phones, tablets and computers and "IoT" devices, we must accept surveillance that is the most pervasive and detailed it has ever been in history. Surveillance that is every central planner's and marketers (and targeter's) wet dream. Unparalleled access to every personal detail of our lives with no fightback to ensure some privacy is left for us? Is that how you want to operate?

Full surveillance is simply a condition of using the internet?

Will your opinion change if you are fighting against a government or policies which you believe are oppressive? A State which is silencing your free speech and right to privacy?

Incidentally, the 1950s would be good to me overall (less tainted vaccines, no chemtrails, no phone towers, no commonly-used microwave radiation (wifi/bluetooth/phone towers). Far more cash, far less electronic. Far less central control. Far more independent retailers. No major concern about GMOs in the food supply. Far less diabetes. Far less fast food. Far less heart disease & cancers. Far cleaner food and land. Far less extinct animals, far less cars on the road, cleaner oceans, far less waste, no plastic everywhere, more wildlife. The big downside would be that I'd have to live with more backward thoughts and probably wouldn't be able to generate my own electricity off-grid…but I think I'd be far happier and healthier overall.

@cheepwun: I will check out those links in good time. Sorry can't read everything now. Call me a pessimist but I envisage a 1984 dystopian future for us all. The Illuminati have already started turning the wheels. Good luck trying to stop it. In summary, we're farked.

Thanks OP bought one. I'm impressed with the reviews so far, didn't know it is also water resistant, even better compared with S8 on this video: https://youtu.be/lguRaVTpRi8

Good deal but would prefer the Redmi Note 4x for $30 More

    • i wonder the difference between SOT

      • +1

GSMARENA says the Note lasts longer. Assuming this is because the RN4x cpu is the Snapdragon 625 which is extremely battery friendly.

        • Oh snap, probably worth the value then!

        • People saying 4 days with one of these is probably plenty for most of us

        • +1

SD 625 much better than 435

        • +1

Yea comes down to the fact that the 625 is 14nm but the 435 in this stuck with the old 28nm process.

  • +1

The XDA forum on this phone is not very active. There is a TWRP recovey available, but nothing in the way of custom or AOSP ROMs https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/xiaomi-redmi-4x

    • +1

Do you know if the phone is rooted by default, or if it's easy to root? If I can't root a smartphone it's of no use to me.

I have a whole bunch of really useful apps paid for and installed years ago that aren't available anymore on the Play Store, so it's completely impossible to re-install them. Simply backing up then re-installing the APK doesn't work as they are "Pro" apps so they won't function without first performing some sort of verification from the Play Store that you've paid. Some apps verify themselves once then store the confirmation somewhere in their data files. Even some free apps required some sort of download before they work, and if their Play Store link is removed they can never be re-installed. Titanium Backup can backup paid market links and app data, so re-installing the apps is super easy. But without root, that's not possible. Without those apps, I may as well just use an old Nokia dumb-phone, as my smart-phone becomes a useless brick.

I also use root to change user interface idiocy such as using default sans-serif fonts for all default and productivity apps. It's so much fun receiving an email like "Here is your temporary password required to set up your account - for security reasons it includes lower-case, upper-case and numbers - 1lLiI10Oo" which in many sans-serif fonts simply looks like a bunch of lines and circles. At one stage I had to continue carrying around an old Android 2.3 device for about eight months because every single note that was written for a particular project became completely illegible due to the default sans-serif fonts included in all later versions of Android. It's almost criminal that the exact same version of a particular app might look completely different on five different Android devices and be impossible to use on some of them simply due to something as stupid as default fonts that can't be changed.

  • Looking for a replacement phone for my mum as her Sony E4G was dropped.

What do you guys reckon of the Note 2 for $80USD? Or not worth the battery issues?

How about the Note 4A for $85USD or $95USD for the global version (and what's the difference?)?

The Leagoo M8 Pro looks quite good @ $79USD too.

Or is this 4X really worth the extra 20-40USD?

    • The leagoo looks good for the money 5.7 inch all the reviews are good.

      • I have one on the way got it from dx for $100 aud

        • yeah I'm quite liking it. how's it been going so far? any pros/cons you can mention?

        • @CVonC: It hasn't arrived yet. probably 2 weeks away still

        • +1

@CVonC: I would have got the Note 2 had i seen that deal most likely especially if your willing to install custom roms etc.

Edit: Given its for your mum you probably would rather leave it stock.

        • @morgs640:

yeah.. so based on stock roms, you'd still pick Note 2 over the M8 Pro at the same price point?

        • @CVonC: I think I would but the battery life probably wont be as good as the m8 pro.

        • @morgs640:

          For what reasons though?

        • @CVonC: faster cpu and being a Xiaomi device it should be good quality and have better software updates. Also 1080p screen vs 720

      • +1

But bear in mind it doesn't support WCDMA 850MHz, so it can't be used with Telstra.

        • The phone has both 850 WCDMA and LTE, so good for Telstra 3G and Vodafone 4G as well. What it doesn't have is LTE700Mhz which can be key frequencies for both Optus and Telstra in regional areas.

        • +1

          @philart:
The Leagoo doesn't support 850MHz (but the Xiaomi phone does).

        • @rogerm22:

But it does support 2100MHz so that should be okay for Telstra 3G provided there's coverage?

        • +1

@CVonC: Yes, if you get coverage from a tower with 2100MHz. But, it won't be any good if you're only getting signal from a 850MHz tower.

    • +1

You should post up a deal for the Redmi Note 2 (paying in USD is cheaper) really great price.

  • Does it have nfc?

  • Enticing deal. Currently using Android 6.0 with a measly 1GB of RAM and it's a struggle.

  • +1

Great price for a very decent phone. Paid about $215 for mine.

  • anybody know if these phones work with pokemon go? Thanks :)

    • They should do

      • thanks Morgs was hoping for someone who has one to comment rather then risking it XD

        • True i don't know for sure but as far as i know Pokemon go only doesn't work if your phone fails safetynet eg if you unlock the bootloader etc. since these come with the stock rom i'm pretty sure you should be fine but can't guarantee it.

        • thanks XD

        • @morgs640: Dumb question, what's the difference between that and the one in OP?

  • Or this if you don't mind a little less battery life for a better faster phone

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/brand-new-Xiaomi-Redmi-note-…

  • -1

pretty good deal for a phone with a snapdragon 625 and 3gb of ram.

    • this is the 5inch phone with SD435 and 720p display. Its basically a budget iphone and its surprisingly amazing!

    • Even cheaper if you get it from Ebay now with the $20 off. The Redmi Note 4 not 4x model is better (Faster CPU than the 625) and better build.

      • +2

        Link?

      • from where?

        • Ebay just find one for 189 and use the thankyou20

        • @morgs640: There isnt any for $189… unless if im blind how about u post a link
