    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/sony-xperia-xz-premium-64gb-chr…

Use proper link mate good deal though nice find.

  • Wow that's a good as price, would warranty be service be better since it's from Kogan or is it still the same with most grey imports?

    • +6

Kogan is much better, remember a few posts saying they refunded the g3 bootloop phones, REALLY GREAT KOGAN personally

    • +1

I've had good after sales service with Kogan myself, got a brand new phone after I sent an old phone that stopped working for some reason. Took about 2-3 weeks in total.

  • +1

The url has been linked thanks!

  • +12

    Be careful with these.

Kogan won't really get involved with warranty because they're Kogan, Sony will direct you to Fonebiz and pay the invoice and Fonebiz will send you back a refurb/used phone replacement that's all scratched up.

In other words, there's basically no warranty. Almost worth considering a cheap Xiaomi MI6 if you're not a band 28 junkie.

    • +1

kogan replaced my z3 compact a few years back. sent it to them and they sent something back - there weren't any scratches on it. never heard of fonebiz before

      • +1

fonebiz is the repair company. I think when my z2 had issues jb sent it to them.

      • +11

Fonebiz is a repair company. Sony doesn't provide repairs themselves, rather they direct customers to Fonebiz and simply pay the invoice on their behalf to meet warranty obligations. Sadly Fonebiz is quite a dodgy company though and the result is endless arguments between Sony and Fonebiz when things go wrong.

In my case it was even worse - the refurb had a cracked screen (extremely minor, but cracked none-the-less). I sent it back and Fonebiz said it was a warranty claim, so Sony has to pay. Sony said they (profanity) up the repair (or more so provided me with a defective refurb), so Fonebiz should flip the bill. Fonebiz ended up threatening to sell the replacement phone as a refurb if I don't pay their $39 "assessment fee". I had to seek legal advice to even receive the broken refurb back, which I then had to purchase a replacement screen for. Oh, to make it worse, the original problem was simply the proximity sensor not working. Other than that my original Z2 was perfect condition. Fonebiz claimed it was water damage, note the Z2 is water proof lmao.

tl;dr: Fonebiz is dodgy and Sony will simply say it's your own problem to solve with Fonebiz - they won't take any responsibility. Kogan more than likely won't either.

        • +2

Jesus the ACCC should be taking notes, but they aren't.

        • +2

@Bunnyburger: I made a complaint but the only real part that's of concern to ACCC was the whole "pay the quote, a fee, or forfeit your phone" part. It gave Fonebiz the power to charge a $39 fee with no evidence they've actually provided any kind of service. If you don't pay it, they would resell your phone for a profit. They no longer advertise refurb phones on their website, so I guess they may have got an unofficial warning for this.

The rest was logged, but as it's only effecting an individual customer (myself) it's not a major concern for ACCC.

        • +1

They did the exact same thing to me!
Z2 touch screen was sometimes unresponsive, sent it in and they reply to me it's water damaged. I argued that its advertised as waterproof and as a layman, if something is water damaged it shouldn't be working at all (not intermittently as was my case)
They then come back and tell me no it's not waterproof, it's water resistant - direct then to the Sony advert of them recording a video underwater and didn't hear back. Posted on the Sony Facebook page to complain they're not repairing under 'water damage' and got an email a day later from Sony with apologies and an address request to send me a new one!
          My experience: Sony = +, Fonebiz = -

        • @lochie360: With mine Sony happily paid for the "water damage repair", but they simply told me it's Fonebiz that guarantees the quality of repairs/replacements - not them. I understand that as Fonebiz is at fault, but I (the consumer) shouldn't be the one fighting that legal battle on Sony's behalf.

        • @dyl:
          Exactly right!
I didn't know Kogan had this kind of warranty service - quite impressive!

      • +1

Kogan's not bad with their replacements, with them it's more a factor of if they'll actually accept responsibility and replace it or not. Fonebiz replacements are so terrible because they are literally refurbished phones - they're using a combination of parts from multiple different dead phones to create a single, usable phone.

    • +4

They repaired mine without any scratches but was missing my sim tray.

      • +1

Did they solve it for you or did you have to buy your own replacement?

        • They couldn't find it so I bought a cheapy from ebay

    • +2

Not sure about your source /experience but Kogan were brilliant with my 3 different LG G4 warranty repair and replacements. Freepost to AU address and new phone back in 2 or 3 weeks. Even getting Optus etx to fix a problem with phone isn't easier or faster

      • -1

They probably directed you to an LG repair centre under warranty? The same would happen with this deal, but you'd be directed to Fonebiz through Sony warranty. If things went wrong with Fonebiz both Sony and Kogan wouldn't take responsibility and Fonebiz wouldn't cough up.

        • Not quite. This is a grey import phone which means Kogan provides its own warranty. LG service centres, Sony and Phonebiz will all not deal with grey imports.

        • +2

Nope. Posted direct to Kogan AU freepost address and Kogan sent replacements back to me. No 3rd party at any point.

      • +3

I had same issue with Kogan when my g5 bricked itself. Top marks for their customer service

    • +1

The mi6 doesn't have a headphone jack though either so it's not a great comparison. This is a top notch price for sd835 + b28 + 3.5mm jack

      • It doesn't have a headphone jack? Wtf?

        Wasn't aware of this… That's a little silly.

  • +9

Slightly cheaper on kogan's eBay store. $680.40 delivered with C5OZ (and less with cash rewards) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/162578140517

Can't believe how fast the price of these are falling!

    • can't add the coupon. did you have any success?

      • +1

Yes, it applied for me. Have you already used this code previously? It's capped at 3 redemptions per account.

        • +1

          ah probably. thanks!

        • @nubix: open a new eBay account or borrow someone else's ;)

  • +1

Thanks… i'd prefer the black though as it makes the chin and forehead less obvious. My local Optus had them for $1036 I think it was when I was there last week.

  • +9

Might be worth noting, this phone has a wide spread camera distortion issue.

    https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-XZ-Premium/XZP-camera-…

    • +1

they have gone past the law of physics. Too many megapixels for such a small camera. Still shots of chicks look better than ever.
To make use of a 4k display you got to wear mighty magnifying goggles.

      • +5

"Still shots of chicks look better than ever"

        need proof for reference.

      • +2

Thanks for that, reading through, it seems to mostly be an issue with closeups and the UWA of the lens ? The guy at #34 is happy with it's landscape abilities as their seems a good amount of info recorded in the RAW files. Several others reported their other branded phones were showing heavy distortion as well eg the G6. I know my Blackberry Dtek 60 does. It looks like some better in camera auto PP might be good for the pit it in auto and take a photo crowd though ? The FOV is incredible and I suspect that's where the issue is ? I have never used a UWA lens that's not distorted

Hopefully the Zeiss collaboration with HMD will see something interesting from the Nokia 9 though.

Thanks for the note, i was about to pull the trigger until i saw some of the photos in that thread!!

      • +1

Yes I know that feeling. This is a phone I've been very interested in. I'm not going to pay all that money for distorted photos, though.

        • This phone is truly incredible otherwise, smashes my Nexus 6P out of the water. But yeah I have the distortion issue too :(

    • Thanks…

  • +1

Does this have a notification led?

    • +1

      Yes.

  • These phones all look great, but what happens when I break it, can I just walk into the Sony store and have them fix/replace it within 15 minutes?

    • Like the Apple store does you mean?

      • -1

Yeah. It's the sole reason I buy iPhones. Android phones these days are just as good, but I know I'm going to break it at some point, and Apple repair is either free or cheap and instant.

        • +3

Link to evidence of comparison that Apple repair is free/ cheap? Experience tells me the opposite.

        • +3

@chyawala: Genius Bar, make an appointment. Phone fixed. Done.

        • @chyawala: Just my anecdotal examples. I've usually had my phone replaced for free and when I dropped it and broke the screen, it cost $200 to get it repaired and took 15 minutes. Ive probably had at least 4 or 5 replacement iPhones in the last few years.

        • @Burnertoasty:

Yikes. 4 or 5 in a few years? You need to buy a Nokia..

    • +1

No. Especially not with a grey import.

    • -1

No warranty with this Kogan phone

      • That would be illegal, i'd be surprised if there is no warranty ? Can you point out where this is the case ? Sure, you can't get warranty from Sony Austria because they weren't the importer but that's no big deal, last two times I dealt with Sony Australia I said I'd never buy local again, their service was so appalling.

        • -3

Lack of decent warranty is not legal because you'll an importer purchasing from Kogan Hong Kong. Therefore not under Australian Consumer Law.

        • +3

Kogan is a registered Australian business that is explicitly advertising to and selling to Australian customers. Therefore they are in fact obligated to comply with Australian consumer law regardless of how and where they source their goods, or what they call themselves.

    Sexy phone

  • +1

Why would you need a 4k screen on a phone?

    • +1

      VR

    • I think it's only 4K in camera mode, unless they've updated it.

      • +3

4K on screen, ive been watching 4K youtube, amazing, Sony screen quality as usual :)

        • Cool. I think 4K is overkill unless it's for VR.

This HDR display I assume is IPS and not OLED?

        • @lostn: IPS and very stunning, worth every single bucks for just the 4k display, then the back of Chrome colour is shiny like a mirror lol

        • +2

@webtherapist: I can't see that many pixels on a 5.5" screen. iPhone people claim they can't even see more than 300 ppi. Even a lot of Android people think QHD is overkill (except in VR).

Sounds like it's just going to drain battery life for little noticeable effect.

        • -2

          @lostn:
          Yes IPS.

They say that the 4K screen is useful for zooming and viewing images taken with the camera. Not sure how easy it is to edit photos on a 5.5 inch screen though.

        • +1

          @Cubacat:

Unless you're zooming by holding a magnifying glass over your phone's screen, I don't see how the pixel density would help?

        • @Cubacat: I do prefer AMOLED over IPS. Less power and better contrast?

    • +4

To bring a SN 835 (Adreno 540) to its knees.

  • How's the battery life on this? I feel like the 4K display will be very strenuous on the battery…

    • +1

the screen normally scaled down to full hd so battery life is still good as :)

  • -8

That's not a whole lot cheaper than some grey import S8/S8+. And I'd rather have that.

The bezels are big for something that uses on screen buttons. They have enough space on the bezel for capacitive.

    • +1

And some people would rather have this. Not a terribly necessary comment.

      • -7

It's a very necessary comment with respect to market value. That phone retails for a few hundred more than this.

I mean if there was a deal on a Pendo pad for $500, and someone said you could get an iPad for that price, your argument would be exactly the same. Some people would rather have the Pendo pad. Not a necessary comment.

        • +3

So you're implying the XZP is vastly inferior to the S8.. Which it is not.

        • +4

@sTon3r: Impossible to reason with those who are sucked in by the Samsung marketing machine.

        • +1

The XZP has the same SoC, same RAM, a higher res screen and the same basic features has the S8. They are very comparable phones.

This is coming from someone who uses an S8+ just by the way.

    • but the sony can do 960 frames a second, samsung cant. All the phones have different features, choose what you want/need.

  • +6

had this phone for a month now paid ($860) on release to import it here. there is no noticeable distortion in the photos. If your into photography and love to nikpick than you know a easy lens profile correction on Ps or Lr will do the trick. even my $2k Nikon lens has some distortion when shooting some scenes.

the super slow-mo camera is fun to play with. this phone is the best VR phone on the market. The 4k videos are noticeable better if you compare them with a S8+ side by side. Read the reviews! its a faster phone than the S8 variant. Full day use i get about 20% batt life left before bed.

    • +1

I did the same thing (Paid about $850 a few weeks ago). I have to disagree with this phone being the best for VR.
I swore never to buy a Samsung again after the festering turd known as the Galaxy S4 which I was tricked into buying a few years ago, but the S8 is definitely better for VR. LCD latency is too high.
Try the free roller-coaster app on an OLED phone; and turn your head to face the side of the cart, and you'll see what I mean.

That said, I wouldn't buy a phone for VR in 2017. The content just isn't here yet, and the S8 can't compare with the HTC Vive anyway.

      • +1

perfectly fine for big screen movie experiences which is what i wanted to be. i can tune a movie into imax screen and enjoy it in my lounge room which is good enough for me. no decent phone VR games or content which is to be expected. 4k+ VR is the future, the phone is more future proof than any other phone on the market atm. S8 has the crappy screen-door effect which turns me off VR in the first place. no phone will beat HTC vive, not sure why you bought that up.

        • no phone will beat HTC vive, not sure why you bought that up.

I brought it up because I'm saying that in general (and imo obviously), it's not worth buying a phone for VR at this point. There seems to be a lot of VR marketing from Samsung right now, which is causing people to think they should get phones in preperation for VR. Having tried the HTC Vive, Gear and my XZ premium in a 'vr headset box', I can see that all the VR content in the Google Play store gets old faster than the NES Classic Mini. The vive with Steam VR games was great fun though.

        • Not really future proofing, IFA is in a month, sony has 2 new phones getting announced already lol.

        • @jerjergege: what does new model releases have to do with future proofing?

  • I bought one of these from Hong Kong with the CTAX20 code on ebay. Paid $850 for it.
Words cannot describe the pain this deal causes me…

This is an amazing phone. It runs Dolphin at 100% speed in the games I've tried. Battery life lasts > 1 day and the build feels really solid.
If anyone has any questions about the phone, I'll be happy to answer them.

I did a lot of research on this these topics and can answer a few thing which people seem confused about above:

    VR

This is not a good phone for VR despite the 4k screen. You want an OLED screen for VR, not an IPS LCD, due to the lower latency (<1ms) of OLED. Get an HTC Vive if you want VR, or wait a couple of yars.

    4K screen

Most things will run in 1080p, not 4k. Only specific apps such as the YouTube app and galary app will display content in 4k.

    Easy repaires in Australia

No, you cannot just walk into a Sony store if you smash your phone or it breaks. You'll have to deal with a company like Fonebiz. It's not terrible in my experience, but not as easy as walking into a store (there aren't that many Sony stores left anyway).

  • Seriously good phone, received mine from another grey market site last week (and paid $100 more).

  • Holy shitsnacks,

Bought my AU stock for 1056 last week, love it.

    Price is unbelievable :/

  • Yeh bought mine for 960 but came with the free headset which meant it cost me 580 really.

Great phone so far though I'd recommend black as the chrome looks fairly ridiculous haha

  • Is this phone got fingerprint scanner on power button? if so, is it enable on this version, I know, its disable on US version.

    • Yes and it's enabled in this version

  • Is it a dual sim model??

    • It's a hybrid sim, to use the 2nd sim, you have to give up the microSD slot.

      • 64 GB should be enough for all av,lol
