[NSW] Opal $2 Fare ‘Transfer Discount’ When You Change Mode of Transport

1315

This may be old news to some, but I only found about this today when I changed from bus to train (and I'm sure others are not aware of this too )

This could be useful when taking a short bus trip (instead of walking to the station) and getting a $2 discount for the train or ferry fare

more info here

Enjoy

old news and not a bargain…

  • +10

Not really a deal. If people need to switch between modes of transport, then they already do and not because of this "deal".

    • -1

Not necessarily. I used to have a 20 minute walk from Town Hall to Pyrmont. I'd only take the bus if it was raining or I had managed to do the 8-trip Monday rort, making the bus free. Since the bus was $2.10, a $2 discount means taking the bus would be a no brainer, and I'd be a lot fatter from less walking. But I moved out of Sydney before this came in so I never found out for real.

But, yeah, the "deal" is pretty narrow anyway.

It has been like this since 09/2016

  • +4

They just increased price from 1/7

    • -7

Opal fares have increased 2.4 per cent, in line with consumer price index (CPI).

Most awards also receive a 2.4 per cent increase in hourly rate per year in line with CPI

The estimated impact on an average commuter’s trip is an extra 50 cents a week.

      It's only ~ $2 a months 😌

      • +10

but the fare transfer is still $2, that should have also gone up as well. A few years the $2 transfer credit will be worth much less as a percentage of total fare saved.

      • +1

You have to understand that this is a year-on-year price increase. A $2 per month increase should be considered in light of fare increases in the past, and potential increases in the future.

When the free travel after 8 trips was abolished, some of us ended up paying 33% more per month than we used to. This $2 increase just continues to drive the dagger in deeper…

Or he's been living under an eastern rock for a while. There should be a time limit for ignorance of old news. Otherwise what next, "I didn't know you could get free water from drinking fountains?"

Band aid fix for removing free travel after 8 trips

    • They removed that policy since last year

      • +1

after bullshit marketing before opal rolled out saying that it was cheaper or just as cheap as travel tens with the free trips

i used to get $3.5 with a 3 zone travel ten per trip

its now like $4.61 with no free trips

Not a deal, you know better!

  • +3

Not new, and not a bargain. Since when is the regular price of something a bargain?

  • Is it still $2.50 on sunday?

    • +2

      increased to $2.60

      • What a joke. A price is chosen as a price point, like the pensioner price… and then the next government comes in and hikes it, destroying that point.

And that's actually a 4% increase as well. Almost double the "CPI"

        • Precisely in a fair cpi index measure, Sunday price would be $2.56. This transporter minister assume no one border with maths when he announce the rise.

        • @leehungfei:

          no one border with maths

Bring on border protection for maths! :)

  • This has been like this for ages & is at every station !

Next you'll be posting about the 'hack' of ~$3.50 opal travel to the airport by using an unregistered card and leaving it in debit.

    • Don't give him ideas.

  • +3

Increase fares by 2.4% but dont increase the transfer discount by 2.4%. (profanity) retarded.

Still shit compared to free rides after 8 trips.

  • +2

Is this an ad? No deal. Price has actually just gone up. So you now actually pay more for the transfer.

  • Used to be free within 1 hour of transfer I think

    • +3

Go post it as a deal. https://www.opal.com.au/en/opal-fares/60_minute_transfer/

      Opal 60 minute transfer

With Opal, if you make several trips using the same mode of transport, and if your transfer occurs within 60 minutes from your last tap off, you only pay one fare based on the distance you travel. It applies to all services except the Manly Ferry service, where the transfer time is extended to 130 minutes from tap on.

The Opal 60 minute transfer doesn't apply at Sydney Airport Stations. If you tap off at the airport and tap on again within one hour, you'll be charged for two journeys, including two Station Access Fees. This gives you two paid journeys towards your Weekly Travel Reward.

Here are two more ripper deals! https://www.opal.com.au/en/about-opal/benefits-of-travelling…

      Weekly Travel Reward

Once you complete eight paid journeys between Monday and Sunday with an Opal card, your fares for the rest of the week are half-price.

      Half price travel!

      Opal Travel Caps

No matter how much you travel with an Opal card you never pay more than your Daily, Weekly or Sunday Travel Caps.

      Card type Daily Weekly Sunday
      Adult $15.40 $61.60 $2.60
      Gold $2.50 $17.50 $2.50
      Concession $7.70 $30.80 $2.60
      Child/Youth $7.70 $30.80 $2.60

The Sydney Airport station access fee is capped at $27 per week (Adult) and $24.50 (Child/Youth, Concession, Gold). So if you travel to Sydney Airport stations often, you save.

Free travel after you reached the cap!

This is not a deal, seriously, soon you'll be posting about how you can get free parking by using a bicycle…

  • +2

I think some people rely on OzBargain so much that they forget it's about Bargains, not basic financial management.

  • +2

what rip off,in victoria your myki card takes you on all forms of transport at no extra cost

  • this is good if you have to transfer, but if you happen to transfer without actually needing it, you'll still be worse off even with this $2.

  • Well a better bargain would be to get the 5.5% discount for Woolworths eGift Cards and top up your Opal through that. Even better if you can find private sellers who sell their eGift cards cheaper ;)

  • whats the usual price?

    • Doesn't matter what the price is, when changing modes of transport using OPAL, you get $2 off, it was their special deal to replace the free travel after 8 trips.

      • Not directly. It was more in response to people who used to use My Multi's who complained that Opal was more expensive when using multiple modes of transport.
