  • I have the Gold and Qantas Amex already and Amex will not allow to have more than 2 cards and this promo not valid for us as I will need to cancel one card before eligible.

  • Can anyone with experience with Amex comment on how good this is? Haven't got a Amex card before, wondering if I should get this?

    • Card is good for supermarket spend as it earns 3 pt per $1 and 2 points per $1 spend on petrol.

      • -4

Please double check this. There have been a lot of changes to points because of the ACCC crackdown on fees. https://www.canstar.com.au/credit-card-rewards/amex-credit-c…

        • +1

Why would I beed to check that? The earn rate is already published on their Amex's website?

        • +1

ACCC changes do not affect Amex as the Amex proprietary system is not a "designated" system by the RBA, so the changes do not apply to direct issue cards.

I've held an Amex for the past year and personally can't recommend them enough.

      Pros:
      - Their customer service is great, both their accounts and travel teams have been easy to deal with
      - 20k points is better than the 15k points that is usually awarded, and if you can find someone to refer the referral bonuses are usually good.
      - If you forget to cancel before the annual fee kicks in, you can cancel the card and have the annual fee refunded with no fuss (have just had this done).

      Cons:
      - Finding places that take it (and don't charge a ridiculous fee) is a bit hit-and-miss - but if you do a supermarket shop regularly, this is well worth it.
      - Depending on the flight, the $200 travel credit won't take you as far as a domestic return flight which you can get with other cards.

      • I think there are only 2 AMEX cards remaining that provide the flight. Qantas Ultimate AMEX and Virgin Velocity Platinum. The Virgin Velocity Platinum has a higher annual fee but has a big bonus points offer but otherwise on an ongoing basis you'd need to know that you'd realistically be able to get that extra $180 for it to be worth it.

        • Gotta take into consideration that you're locked into booking a flight with the Qantas and Virgin card variants, but you can get more value for money there.
With the Plat Edge $200 credit, it can also be used for both flights/hotel stays booked via Amex Travel. Some people argue about the value you can get out of it though.

I found that the hotel prices on Amex Travel were cheaper than Expedia and other booking sites when booking recently.
Not sure if this is usually the case, but worth keeping in mind.

The free travel insurance is pretty good too.

        • @Sadkid: just booked 2 nights in Cairns and can confirm the hotel was a couple bucks cheaper then booking.com and Expedia. Paid 5bucks for my accommodation. Love it

    • this card is great for earning points on supermarket (3 points per $1) and petrol stations (2 points per $1)!!

      • +1

Or buy wish gift cards (at >5% off) and fuel up at a woolworths caltex petrol station.

You will get 3x points that way :)

One of the best, I use Coles platinum and AmEx Platinum Edge together cover everything for me.

    • +1

The Plat Edge is probably the best supermarket credit card out there for the casual traveller (at least 1 domestic trip a year).

If you travel internationally at least once a year, the Amex Explorer is a better option if you can get it.

One of the main perks of having an Amex card is how versatile their loyalty program is - Membership Rewards Ascent and Membership Rewards Gateway in particular.

They have the most hotel/FF programs partners that you can transfer your points to, compared to other credit card issuers. Starwood with its highly valued points should be noted here, as Amex-issued cards are currently the only ones in the market that can transfer points to the SPG program.

  • Just got the card. Have missed out on the 20000 points. Great deal.

    • +2

Ask them nicely they might give it to you.

  • would existing other amex card issued holders qualify for this promo.

    • +2

If you have held an Amex in the last 18 months then you would not qualify for this promo.

  • Looks like if you only have one Amex that you will still qualify. Over the phone initially I was told I wouldn't qualify as I have one Amex but when the card came I was pleased that the annual fee had been waived.

    • +4

It's the bonus points that usually doesn't get credited

  • dont forget to use the referrals above when signing up to gain additional 10,000 points after spending $750 in 3 months!

    • +1

      Doesn't apply to this deal

  • I already have an AMEX Essential, no signup bonus 20k then?

    • +4

All signs points to do not pass GO do not collect 20k points

      • Monopoly rules of collecting $200 (travel credit) still applies though, right?

  • I have amex platinum velocity (which I will cancel soon), have just applied for this platinum edge.
Will see if I get the bonus points or not.

But mainly I want to keep this card to build up points for flights!

  • I've just applied and while on the phone with the AMEX operator I got them to double check that I'm qualified for this promotion. (Bonus 20k)

They then rang creditcard.com.au and got back to me saying that it's email invitation only with a code attached.
I've looked at both AMEX and creditcard.com.au site and found no mention of it being invitation only.

In the processes of contacting creditcard.com.au reps to clarify what's going on.
    Will report back.

      Latest update.
AMEX just called back and had confirmed that the bonus 20k is legit.

      • You apply online or through the phone?

        • Applied online via the creditcard.com.au site.

AMEX sent me a SMS straight away to contact them to progress the application. Thus the reason I was on the phone with them.

  • +1

Travel credit totally kills this card.. So missed the complimentary flight

  • what will 20k of points on amex get you in department store vouchers?

    • you could sell the points for $200 in the classifieds

      • to anyone in particular?

        • There are some good people who would be happy to buy ;)

  • Want to get an AmEx card hearing all the praises in AmEx threads, but not sure if I want one with an annual fee. I know travel credit covers it, but I am not that interested in that, unless I make myself to spend it on something. Just to confirm, travel credit doesn't have to be spent on flights, but on any travel-related stuff from AmEx Travel site like general attractions?
3x points in supermarkets compared to the Essential card is nice, but not sure that's going to get me $195 to break even.

    • Yes does not necessary need to be spent on travel credits

    • Its fee free for the first year and you could sell the 20k points for $200 in the classifieds so thats your second year covered too

  • I have free velocity amex for last 3 years so I wouldn't be qualify for the points?

Will it hep if I cancel it before applying?

    • If you cancel you need to wait out the 18 months before applying for another one in order to qualify for bonus points

  • No referral bonus on top of the 20K in points?

  • +1

Great deal. Exactly what I was after.
Fingers crossed the card arrives before my holiday next week.

  • Bugger I'm short 6months reapplying grrrrr
