Mobile phones have very tiny margins - I would say it has the smallest margin in the electronics category besides gaming consoles.
Having 20% off is unrealistic - especially 20% off normal selling price.

Ok, here's the question. Iphone7 is 1145, less 10% so makes it 1030.50 which is 936.82 plus 93.68 tax.

My duty free allowance is 900, but I have an item worth more than 900.
As far as I can read the actual letter of the law, I will be liable for GST on the ENTIRE amount if I bring back more than my allowance (not just on the amount in excess of 900).
Yes, the chance is low that anyone will even ask, but I'd like to have it watertight or I will look shifty at the airport…

They are my thoughts. Customs is an unnecessary risk.
Just pop it in a case and use a your regular phone, customs probably will see it as that.
I did something like this with a camera, and declared it. The customs guy asked if I'd used it overseas, I said yes, he said it was now second hand and only worth half as much. Move on, next customer please.
The customs guys are out to stop organised smuggling and biosecurity hazards. They don't care about a punter with a phone or camera, it aint worth the paperwork. We're all not as important as we think we are
Yeah sure you may be lucky, but the fact is you'll be over the legal limit and you're admitting that via their paperwork.
Customs may or may not enforce it on the day.
