  • got the 13 inch pro No TB 256gb for $1799

  • I need build to order … I wish there was a way to get a discount on these.

  • Worth it? How much is office for mac?

    • Free for me :)

      • How come?

        • student or work subscriptions usually

        • @renza: Yeah! I usually get most of the software for free. I have a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for companies like them XD.

  • +3

i have one of these - i hate that they only have usb-c … have spent $250 on dongles. battery life not great.

    • Exactly my thought. It's so annoying if you need to transfer files very often through USB A drive.

    • 250 on dongles

Dafaq, even Apple's official cable for HDMI and USB 3.0 at under $100. What you got connected to your Mac?

      • the standard apple multi dongle has- hdmi / usb a / usb c - not really enough for thing things i need… i think it is about $100

i bought an arova one that had 2x usb a, sd card and ethernet - that was $150 from harvey norman … but buggy, sometimes you plug it in and loses wifi.., logitech unifying receivers don't work well in it either… i had the same logitech unifying setup at home and work - i'm now moving to wired mouse/keyboard for home and work to use with this macbook … pretty ironic really.. it's driving me back to wired!

also these machines can't easily do 2560 if you have monitors at this resolution - got an apple thunderbolt 2 - 3 dongle, but it doesnt actually do displayport, even tho it looks like one

some people report that you buy: usb-c to hdmi then hdmi to mini displayport - this is the next thing i'll try, probably another $80…the standard apple usb-c to dvi can't do dual link.

        it's dongle city…

arova: $150, usb-thunderbolt: $70, new cables: $30, extra usb-c to hdmi multi dongle ($30 - doesn't work on this macbook - apparently third party ones really iffy), have ordered a bunch more too
        also: 2x new keyboards/mice

        • I use a 4K Phillips monitor with my touch bar MscBook Pro. The Phillips only supports 4K over DisplayPort.
I had to search high and low for a dongle and finally found one from a UK seller on eBay. Amazingly it supports power pass through as well. Now I just have one cable to plug in.
I've switched to using Bluetooth keyboard and mouse (MX Master supports Bluetooth anyway).
I've been using it since Jan and it's been rock solid. Only minor quibble is that power is delivered at 35W so it sometimes discharges faster.
I did spend over $300 trying different adapters though. If I could go back, I would buy a single ThunderBolt 3 dock for around $400 and be done with it.

    • is the battery life seriously not great? i have the 2013 mbp and absolutely love the battery life still after all these years

      • Could not be more opposite with my 2017 MBP. Battery life is awesome

        • i'm coming from lenovo x series that had a stated 20+ hours life - never got that tho

reality is my macbook pro doesn't last a night on the couch (4 hours), whilst the 2 year old lenovo would (maybe 6 hours) - i'm doing development tho, so quite heavy on battery

also usb-c seems buggy - you plug it in and you lose wifi - there are lots of posts on this…

        • @netpenthe: I agree, battery life definitely depends on the task. e.g. Flash video / google chrome saps battery at twice the rate of YouTube on Safari.

I've not had any issues with USB-C on both 2016 and 2017 touch bar MacBooks. I normally either use a hyperdrive multi dongle or a belkin USB-C to A dongle and both have worked great so far.

        • @netpenthe: can you be a bit more specific with your dev use case?

personally i can have 3 x adobe cc apps ie photoshop etc, plus 10 tabs safari, 10 tabs chrome, a bunch of other apps going and still get 7-8+hrs min on a 3 year old MBP battery. id imagine the new one would be the same.

i bought a surface pro 4 recently and the lack of battery life gave me anxiety. 2-3 hours MAX for the same sort of situation.

i seriously think apple make the best laptops in the world. i am weary of this usb-c only world theyve banked on though.

        • @blaze:

          lots of reports on it:
          https://www.google.com.au/search?q=poor+battery+life+macbook…

this cnet review says he gets 3 hours 7 minutes, but fixed it by turning brightness down - im trying this now - https://www.cnet.com/au/news/macbook-pro-battery-problem-fix…

i'm trying now with display at lowest setting..

the usb dongle thing is annoying …… i have to remember to carry a bunch of things around with me now.

have had a surface pro too.. agree battery is poor on it.

        • @jjayoen:
i guess i'm just getting used to having to carry a bunch of things around with me…

old computer had: display port, vga, sd, 2x usb…, this feels significantly worse, would much rather the laptop be 2 mm thicker!

  • +1

What's the cheapest option with touch bar?

    • +1

      $2099 from myer
      Link

      • +1

        This is last year's model.

        • yup tht link is for 2016 model

    • +1

Numerous reviews have said it's worth sticking with the normal key bar over the touch bar. Your paying extra for something that you have to look at to use which defeats the object or the quick bar in the first place mate.

Also battery life better on non touch version

  • +3

    Don't buy a Mac with only 8gb in 2017.

    • +2

macs manage ram better than windows. 8gb is enough for many usage scenarios on a mac.

      • +1

Mac manages ram terribly now days (this is what happens when Apple pulls all their talent to work on iOS). I installed Windows 10 on my old MacBook with 4gb just to make it usable.

If your buying a device that you want to use for several years, 16gb is all I'd consider.

        • +1

personally id never get less than 16gb for what I do. but if i was buying something for the misso, i know she'd be more than fine on 8gb for years

        • @blaze:

Yeah true, for basic web browsing etc. 8gb will be adequate for a while. Wouldn't say years but.

        • +1

Don't agree, was having no problem with running a lot of stuff on 4gb on my air. The fast SSD makes up for it.

      • +3

But 128gb storage feels little short.

    • Respectfully disagree. Currently using 8GB and never had an issue. A resource hungry Windows rig, on the other hand…

  • Is it possible to pick up one tomorrow morning? will fly out tomorrow evening

    • no, it seems impossible

    • +5

Borrow friends macbook and show the receipt. They aren't that strict with matching serials yet. YMMV

      • +2

I love how cunning OzBargainers are.

      • Actually I have a 2012 retina Mac book pro 15 but look to buy a new 13.

      • +3

Be bold and give him the white dell 11 inch job that usually goes on here for $320

    • I ordered a pro in Myer eBay early june, and it takes one week for them to send out the tax invoice and another week to receive the item. They normally only send out the tax invoice once they handed over to the courier

  • +8

Bit off topic: In what year 2017 universe, a 128GB storage laptop is called pro?

    • +1

In a world of NASs and SANs. I'm fine with 128, even with a triple boot going on!!

      • +2

really depends on your use case, if you are using the Mac to do video editing, or running another vm or windows instance, then 128 is certainly not enough. but for normal use case like doing assignments , documents or browsing web, it should be good to go

        • So Pro web browser? I'm only wondering about the Pro part, not the entire machine.

        • +1

          @billy77:

I know professional devs that use 128. But they're not pro load your laptop with games and pron…I mean don't do video editing

    • -1

I agree! Just NO to such small storage. Call me old school but I still live my 2013 MBP with 750GB storage. Sure they're not SSD but I don't mind waiting a couple of more seconds for iPhoto to load. At least it will have all the pictures I've ever had.
.. and before someone says "what if your hard drive dies?" I have back ups, two! I guess I prefer convenience over unnecessary speed.

  • +1

I assume the SSD is not user replaceable?

  • Where do you type in the " chaos " code?

    • At checkout, last step.

  • -6

    Still a POS rip off

  • +1

Can't decide between this or xps 13 (256gb) for uni

  • Irreplaceable hdd for 2017 model with usb-c only ports, this is the reason why I purchased 2016 mbp….

  • How are refunds handled for the eBay store? I have some myer vouchers so wanted to "return" and then repurchase.

    • Hm looks like you can according to the FAQs. Fingers crossed!

  • Where can I apply "chaos" on eBay? Which page will it ask?

  • +1

Just brought one Wednesday night with 15% discount. Myer sent an email this morning saying it is out of stock and will refund me in full.
Does anyone knows how to deal with this situation? How can I secure $1530? Hopefully can buy one before 28th so I can have Tax return when going overseas.
    Much appreciate for answer.

    • +1

+1 for this, I actually purchased on 25th and they emailed me just then they're out of stock, space grey

      • Called Myer service Friday was told out of stock nationwide, I went to Myer Chatswood Sydney today, talked to one of the staff and get confirmed that they do have stocks. They even took out two: 1 sliver 1 grey asking me which colour I want. Came back to Myer 30 mins later complaining this manner, one manager told me online purchase is online purchase, they can do anything. What a shame. I guess Myer just don't want people to buy cheap Macbook

  • no ssd upgrade path along the line. pass, wait for next year.

    meanwhile still using 2011 MBP

  • This deal is back on :)

  • Was tempted by this deal but my 2012 13 inch MBP has more ports, 4+hr battery life left after all those years so would seem like a downgrade for me. Bring back the ports I say.

  • The code is not working at all. anybody succeed? @tomleonhart

  • Are these new 2017 models?

  • Damn wished I got this now :(
