Thanks. Better than nothing ay. It's one of the most expensive cities in the world to get to the airport.
I wish we had a public bus route or train line. Sydney costs me $4.20 to the airport

    • +24

How did you get that rate? $4.20? When I look it up on Opal fare calc, it comes up as far more expense. (http://www.sydneytrains.info/tickets/fare_calculator.htm)

I did the sneaky when I was there to avoid paying the Airport Rate (https://www.opal.com.au/en/opal-fares/airport_station_access…).

      1) Arrive at Sydney Airport
      2) Walk to Mascot Station (~15-20 min walk, ped crossings, flat)
      3) Load a Opal (free, no cost for a new one!) with $10 at the convenience shop out front
      4) Go to destination ($3.38 to city)

      Return
      1) Get on at the local station
      2) Get off at Airport station and watch your card go into negative.
      3) Fly away, no more to pay.

Cost to travel direct from Domestic to City $34.36.
Cost to travel direct from Mascot and return direct to Airport $6.76 + 15-20 walk, plus souvenir Opal that you can dispose of or use to scrape gum off shoes.

      • +2

Godlike. Can't wait to try next time.

      • I was wondering if anyone knows how much an Opal card can go into negative.
Last times I went to Sydney, I always went to negative at the airport when leaving, but just $2-3, I think.
Can I hop on a train in the city with just 50c on the card and leave with -$13 or something?

        • It's not so much about how much it can go into negative, just ensuring that you won't get a fine/booked before hand. :)

From my research, you are ok if you have enough to cover the minimum fare cost, which I believe is based on some peak/off-peak rate for the times of travel. As long as you have that amount, you can travel without getting a fine, but will need to recharge to continue beyond that point once you go through the gates.

        • Sure can :) as long as you have enough on Opal when you tap on. The card doesn't know where you're final destination is…

        • +3

You can't go negative at the airport station anymore. The gates will block you and there's a top up machine on the inside.

        • @lisamay: As of when? It worked for me when I went down over the weekend 21-24 April.

        • @togaboyau: I couldn't go into negative earlier this year at domestic airport station. Interesting… maybe it's the amount you can go negative. How far negative did it let you go?

        • @lisamay: Yeah you can. I was about negative $15 when I tapped off at Domestic last Wednesday

        • +1

          @lisamay:

Looks like it still works and there's no limit:
          http://www.theage.com.au/nsw/opal-card-loophole-costs-nsw-go…

Sounds like you can save a lot of money by making sure you just got a dollar left when heading to the airport.

        • @MrTweek: You need more than a dollar. It's $2.36 if beginning your journey in off-peak and I think $3.37 (or whatever the minimum train fare in peak is) in peak.

      • +3

You can of course avoid the platform fee all together by getting on and off at Mascot, and using the 400 bus to get between the airport and Mascot station. It's not a major hassle if you have the time and not too much gear.

In Melbourne you can avoid the Skybus by catching the local 901 bus to Broadmeadows train station, though that takes more time and is a hassle.

Note Jetstar ticket holders can get a minor discount on the Skybus - forget what it is - $1-$2 or sumfink.

        • +1

Note Jetstar ticket holders can get a minor discount on the Skybus - forget what it is - $1-$2 or sumfink.

Yes, $1, so you pay $18 for the trip.
Last time I did that, they did not ask for my ticket, so I guess it's worth saying you are flying Jetstar whenever you buy a ticket.

      • Thanks. I'm heading to Sydney, so have saved this information. The 400 bus was mentioned too?

    • Only $4.20?

    • Train cost me around $16 in Sydney from cbd to the airport. How do you get it so cheap?

      • At least $16 is from anywhere in the CBD (or even the whole city?)
In Melbourne you pay $19 for the Skybus and then usually $4.20 on top of that for a Myki trip, if your final destination is not inside the free tram zone.

Sucks to pay $23.20 for a 30 minute trip from Southbank to the airport.

        • +2

There are public (myki) buses that go to Melbourne Airport, they are just much (much) slower.

And if you are going from Southbank and catching skybus, walk a few hundred meters to the free tram zone to cut your fare by $4.

      • +1

You can catch the 400 bus from Sydney Airport. You can transfer to a bus or train to the city at Mascot.

    • it was 15$ ish for me the last time

It may be that cheap if you leave in burbs around mascot or international?

    • +4

      Heathrow: $42
      Stockholm $42
      Gatwick: $29
      Brisbane: $18
      Sydney: $18
      Auckland: $18

Doesn't seem too out of whack to me.

      • +1

That's cause you've picked a bunch of cities that are more expensive.

You could do the same with cities where it's cheap to get to the city and make Sydney look expensive!

        • And not just that but airports that have express trains to them without mentioning other decent transport.

You can catch the tube from Heathrow for less than $10 to anywhere in central London.

Direct buses to Heathrow, Arlanda, Gatwick and maybe other are < $10.

      • Beijing: $4

      Melbourne:
      Routes 478, 479 and 482

Routes 478, 479 and 482 provide bus services from Melbourne Airport to Airport West and Sunbury.

      Route 901 (SmartBus)

Route 901 (SmartBus) provides a frequent connection between Broadmeadows Station and Melbourne Airport. The trip takes about 20 minutes, but leave more time during peak times.

Route 901 runs between Melbourne Airport and Frankston via Broadmeadows, Roxburgh Park, Epping and Greensborough seven days per week. Buses run every 15 minutes until 9pm weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends and evenings until midnight (9pm on Sundays).

At Melbourne Airport, all Route 901 services depart from the bus terminal outside Terminal 4.

all for the cost of a two hour myki.

    • We do, I take it all the time. 901 bus to Broadmeadows station that now departs within the lower level of the new carpark in front of T4, then train to Flinders, etc.

Zone 1+2. Operates frequently enough during the day, but Sundays and late nights/early mornings are difficult.

  • +2

Haha, good timing. Heading to Melbourne tomorrow for this weekend and about to book this Skybus service from airport to the hotel.

  • +1

Well done OP, I didn't see your post originally. Thanks mods!

  • +1

    TERRY P = COACH CAPTAIN!

  • +2

There is a 901 bus in Melbourne.

    • Yep I have done this trip before, catch it from Sunshine station I believe?

      • I got on from Frankston, 4 hours drive.

  • What, no train?

Even little old Perth is getting an underground rail link - with local commuter fares too - about $5 max from the city

    • +1

Melbourne's infrastructure is decades behind :(

You either pay $19 for a direct 20-30 minute bus trip to the CBD or you pay $4.20 for an unreliable combination of bus and train which takes at least 1h15.

There won't be a train line for a least the next 10 years.

Getting to Perth airport is so easy compared to that, and now they are even getting an airport train like the one Melbourne urgently needs.

  • +2

Thanks OP! My partner is using the skybus tonight so I will get her on the coupon!

  • Their FAPAS line never gets any discounts :(

  • I use MYKI to go to and from the airport. Catch the Craigieburn train to Broadmeadows and catch the 901 bus from there to the airport. The Mel airport people moved the stop from right in front of Terminal 3 into that new parking structure where Tiger terminal is so now its a bit further to work but only about 5 minute walk. It helps that I live on the Craigieburn line, its faster for me to go this way than to use skybus and cheaper.

I think a lot of people, myself included, would be more than willing to pay the extra to not have to take valuable items through Broady.

      • What if you have no valuable items?

  • Thanks OP! Bought a bunch for myself and friends who are headed down later this year :)

  • How does the Skybus pass work? Can you use this code for buying a ticket for use later in the year eg July, Aug or Sep?

    • +1

Read the description, it says it in there pretty clearly.

      tl;dr: yes

  • They used to do the 5 and 10 trip passes now you can't buy them online anymore, wow what a stupid idea, live chat said it happened last month was going to top up and get some more passes maybe I'll be using Uber more for the trips.

    • Fun fact: for 2 or more people travelling together, an Uber from Southern Cross to the Airport would in most cases be cheaper than SkyBus.

      • My point exactly :)

  • +8

I should point out, that you can get discounted SkyBus tickets on Jetstar's website that saves you a dollar on a single ticket and $2 on a return. Furthermore, tickets bought through Jetstar are valid for 12 months compared to SkyBus' 6 month validity period. This is OzBargain after all… so every dollar saved is worth it :D The coupon code also works on the Jetstar site and I just bought a ticket for $28.05 return!

    • +1

Thank you so much this is a bargain.

    • +1

Noice, used this with my $1 Tiger air return ticket for true cheap arsedness. Perth to Melbourne cbd and back for under $200

    • +1

      Deal updated, thanks guy.

    • +2

      A bargain within a bargain. Bargain-ception

  • More on Sydney..

If going to Domestic, catch train to Mascot, then catch 400 bus or walk (~15 minutes)
If going to International, catch train to Wolli Creek and then walk (~15 minutes)
If going to International, catch train to Banksia/Rockdale and catch 400 bus.

I think for International going from Banksia/Rockdale might be a little quicker (closer).

    • Is the 400 an airport/free bus?
I'm heading to Sydney for 6 days, and noting down these things and tips.

      • It's not a free bus. It's a regular public bus and you'll pay for it with an Opal card - should cost either $2.10 or $3.50.

        • What causes the price variable?
I'm taking the suggestion (above) to walk to madcor and buy Opal card from there. Does this include ferry trips too?

        • +1

          @albanyson:

          What causes the price variable?

Because I don't know what price bracket it falls within. It's determined by distance (if I'm not mistaken)

Does what include ferry trips too?

          I assume you meant Mascot.

  • Caught an Uber from Melb airport last night and the driver told me he had heard there is a station or a section allocated under the airport ready for when rail is approved and built. Apparently every time it gets put forward for construction taxi directorate, the airport and skybus use their political muscle to have it knocked on the head

  • Damn, just bought on skybus website. Didn't realise it would be cheaper on Jetstar website!

  • Perfect, going to Melbourne for the weekend.

  • I just did a quick comparison between Skybus and normal Myki bus, for travel from Airport to the Princess Theatre in the city (my accommodation is near there).

    Skybus:
    Travel time: 50 minutes
    Cost: $14.45 with this deal

    Normal bus:
    Travel time: 70 minutes
    Cost: $4.10 for 2-hr fare

In my case, I think I'd pick the normal bus. Skybus only if I was arriving at odd hours or normal bus doesn't match up.

Anyone know whether you can stack this with the Velocity points earn? The T&Cs seem to explicitly not allow this but OzBargain sometimes finds things are different in real life..

    • I couldn't find anywhere to put my Velocity number in when I ordered through the Jetstar website (obviously)

  • anyone having problem with their credit card after buying from
this website ? i don't really use my cc much but after buying from this site few illegal one pop up.. kinda shit since i'm traveling out the country and need my cc.

  • We are travelling with kid, does anyone know if uber in Melbourne can legally transport kid without a car seat? Thanks.

  • Coupon code expired.

    • Not at Jetstar website because I just bought it. Click the above link provided.

      • I just tried the coupon code and it said it was invalid. This is on my phone though…. Strange.

    • Still valid as I also just purchased on Jetstar website.
