Been watching and waiting for this lens to go on sale for the last couple of months, almost as good of a price as this deal from March (same seller, incidentally). A great, sharp prime for Nikon owners. Note that it'll be effectively a 50mm or so for crop sensors.

  • High-performance optical system with aspherical lens delivers superior reproduction capability

  • No Canon Love?

    • ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Don't know which lenses are good, so I wouldn't be able to speak to what's a bargain I'm afraid.

      • That's okay.. Really after a Canon 50mm f1.2 or Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART but cant find any decent deals :(

        • You should have grabbed them last night with the 15% off store wide.

      • What's the best lens for around the $200 mark?

        • Canon or Nikon? Would also depend on your use case/the type you're after.

        • +1

for Nikon DX - this one.

        • +1

          Best lens for what?

        • +2

@Gershom: You know, "best lens"? How do you not know what "best lens" is? Like "best app" for your phone.

        • Second this, stayed on my D5000 95% of the time till i change over to sony

        • @xzybargain: Nikon sorry

  • Thanks. Bought one.

  • great lens, just remember to correct the distortion in post… Lightroom and Photoshop have a built-in preset for it.

  • Good lens, It was on my D5000 most of the time in the past until i moved into FX. I paid for about the same price years ago from DWI.

    • What prime lense are using for FX now? I'm in a similar boat, need to find what prime lens to consider?

      • not op but cant go wrong with 50mm f/1.2

        • Hard for my old eyes to use manual focus…

      • depends what you're after, but the screw drive D lenses are amazingly good value - new or second hand.

if I could only have one lens it'd be the 35mm f2 D series, second choice would be the 50mm f1.8 D.

        • Why not G type lenses, these have auto aperture and are only marginally more expensive than corresponding D type lens.

        • @quasims:
          50mm 1.8D ~ $140
          50mm 1.8G ~ $240

          35mm 2D ~ $370
          35mm 1.8G ~ $680

that's a pretty big margin (grey market new in both cases). I also prefer the D series lenses because they have better manual focus ergonomics and is compatible with every AI Nikon camera body ever made (film cameras as well as digital).

EDIT: plus the screw drive system is far more robust than the motors in many of the G lenses.

    Will this fit D3000?

    • Yeah, fairly certain.

    • Yes it will

  • i got the same one bought in 2013 from Kogan for $199.

    • Nikon prices are crazy!
I paid this price back in 2010.

Will this fit D5100? Can someone please answer. Im too lazy to look it up.

    • +1

      Yes for this one too.

      • "It is the first prime lens released by Nikon specifically designed for Nikon DX format DSLR cameras that is both rectilinear and supports autofocus on the Nikon D40, Nikon D40X, Nikon D60, Nikon D3000, Nikon D3100, Nikon D3200, Nikon D3300, Nikon D3400, Nikon D5000, Nikon D5100, Nikon D5200 and Nikon D5300." - (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_AF-S_DX_Nikkor_35mm_f/1.…)

  • looks like this epic deal with the nikon cashback is not ever coming back D:

  • yes, I use it on my Nikon d5100 for my kids portrait. nice lens.

  • Thanks Ozymandias! I'd been looking for a deal on this - bought one :)

  • I can see the NIKON JAA015DA AF-S 50MM F/1.8G is 40 dollars more than this.
Which one would you recommend for a D5200?
I think the uses are similar for both, street photography, portraits, etc

Will this be seen as a 35mm for a DX lens ?
will the be seen as 75 mm for a DX lens ?

    • +1

It's a full frame lens, recommend if you intend to upgrade to FX body in the near term and consider your lenses as long term investment. Remember you'll end up gumtree'ing all your DX lenses once you're on FX… the mount will work but you'll shoot a black circle around the edges of the photos if you use DX lens on an FX body. You'll have to crop every pic… not a big deal using the modern photo editors… a batch job can automatically do it for you… but your pic resolution will be reduced… so effectively if your FX body is 22MP you could effectively be shooting 14MP pics with it… You'll be able to use the FX lens on DX body without the above limitation but at the corrected focal length…

    • I have both… the 50mm comes out as a 75mm as you say, as its an FX lens - so for me the image is way too tight for street shots where you want any scenery. I put it on when I want to take portraits with blurred backgrounds - it's real nice for that. If you're shooting street scenes at night you are probably better off with the 35mm.

The 35mm is 35mm for your DX, so it is a fair bit wider, and an excellent all rounder, this one pretty much stays on my camera 99% of the time. Whilst you can use the 35mm for portraits, you gotta get close to someone's face and there's not the nice bokeh effect unless you do. Much less natural when you stick a camera right in someone's face.

As Quasims says you can keep the 55mm if you plan to get an FX camera in the future. Personally I have no plans to go FX, so I like to have and regularly use both of these primes, they're both excellent and slightly different, though you can do nearly everything with the 35mm :)

    • Zekep, if you want to upgrade from the standard zoom kit lens on your d5200 consider the lens in this deal. It gives approx the field of view of a 50mm lens(35mm/full frame equiv)on your d5200. It is a fast, useful allrounder. The lens you reference in your post gives approx the field of view of a 75mm lens(35mm/full frame equiv) on your d5200, too long for general use.

  • Thanks OP. Dunno why I bought it, already have 50mm f/1.8g & I am still a noob. :D
