They're not out yet, only on pre order from Apple. Next week they come out

      **EDIT: Ships friday from Apple

  • is this a good deal???

    • +1

This is a fantastic price for this computer. I have this computer and my only fault with it would be that it's pricey. For this price is a great buy. If people have been thinking about a purchase of one this is a good deal.

      • +1

Yep. The newer version is only a slight spec bump from Skylake processes to current Kaby lake processes which is roughly 10% increase. Only thing you gain is slight performance and battery (especially with 4k streaming) since it has hardware encoding for h.265. Everything else seems the same, storage, RAM +RAM Speeds.

So this is an excellent price. Also its cheaper than the ones in the Refurb store.

        • Obviously the newer ones will always be slightly better. Compared to this deal though they'll be $700+ more. This is a great offer.

  • damn, good price

  • +1

Just curious - what element of the specs make this a good price? There are far more powerful laptops out there for less. I can understand personal taste and brand loyalty but it seems crazy when I see people calling something this expensive a good price.

      Mac OS

      • You mean a highly restrictive OS who tried in vain to be Unix but could only implement part of it? Gotcha.

        • The last time I checked there are quality/functional/beautiful software like Sketch, DEVONthink Pro Office, Tweetbot, Bear, Alfred and LaunchBar exclusive to this "restrictive" OS which are not present in Windoze.

On specs alone you'll never buy a mac. It's terrible value when you look at it like that. You can't compare Apple laptops to windows laptops. Apple are still really the only fully integrated laptop makers (with windows recently entering the market again this isn't true any more but those aren't cheap either).

If you want "the best value laptop" period, do not buy a mac; you'll never be happy. There are heaps of cheaper options with better specs. Specs don't always give you the full picture though.

They pick all the parts in the computer and they are made to work together. Anyone who has had a MacBook will tell you they run for ages and this is a key factor.

      Why I like mine:

The build of the computer is awesome. It feels great when you pick it up. This particular MacBook is the best looking computer ive ever seen. It's not the thinnest but for me the 13" form is perfect for an everyday user.

The new USB c ports mean you can charge it from all sides.

I much prefer MacOS to windows. This is a personal preference which means I don't really have too many computers to choose from.

The software that's included with the computer is pretty good. Pages, Numbers and IMovie are pretty useful.

The touchbar is actually more useful than I would have first thought. I don't love touch screen laptops.

Just my 2c. This deal won't be for everyone but it's a good deal for what it is.

Just to add to the list

Mac OS - gets free updates to newer versions.
Windows - You have to pay for new versions normally (yes you can get upgrades from 7/8/8.1 to windows 10 before and now with doing a workaround - assertive technologies). But you have to pay to upgrade from Home to Pro. Only one version for Mac.

MacOS - integrates nicely with its ecosystem - iPhones, iPads, iCloud etc
MS is doing the same thing now with MS account logins, One Drive, Windows Continuity with Windows Phones

Customer service is generally nicer experience overall with Apple. You can go to a "genius bar" - yes they can also be a PITA
MS has tried to copy this with a Windows Store.

Windows has its advantages over Macs with easier upgrades like RAM and SSD, more customisation with various hardware vendors and their components, can play better games, generally cheaper, works better in a business environment with Windows Server and Active Directory.

Hardware is half the experience, software has to be well written to take advantage of the hardware. Apples software like Final Cut Pro is more optimized for the hardware they choose over hardware in general.

I also own a PC desktop, Android tablet and an iPhone. Not a fanboy here. Honestly its a preference thing, I switch between all of them when I'm on the go or at home/work.

        • Good points from both of you. I do agree, from a design standpoint they seem pretty attractive and I do hear that they are reliable

@ZJack: I bought my MacBook Pro in 2010 and it's still such a beast with an SSD upgrade.

        • +1

          @ZJack:

I can vouch for the reliability. 2012 MacBook Pro still chugging along fine, and the 2004 PowerBook it replaced (rarely used now though).

The other benefit of macs is the insanely high resale compared to pc. I could sell my 5yr old MBP for ~50% of what I paid. If you can salary sacrifice you could potentially upgrade annually and make money on the changeover.

Unfortunately you can put that in a spec list.

          @Asian Boyfriend:
          2009 macbook still going :)

        • -1

          @Asian Boyfriend:

A beast? Really? I bought my Samsung series 9 second hand in 2012 and I still use it. But it would have higher specs than equivalent MacBook at the time. And there's no way I'm deluded enough to call it a beast, it gets by disappointingly but no failures.

It has 8gb of ram for a MacBook air equivalent laptop. I had an issue last week with somebody at works laptop not working with our in house software because their newish MacBook air has 4gb ram. They paid more than my laptop cost me.

I agree the experience might be smoother on mac on equivalent specs but it doesn't change the reality of the hardware and it's capabilities

@bs0: 2007 still going !!! upgraded ram and HD. still good for netflix/web browsing and funnily enough did a recent job using it, i was very impressed.

        • @ZJack: I'm using mine for photo editing using Photoshop and Light Room CC 2017. They work fine. The machine struggles when it comes to AutoCAD but still useable. Boot up in less than 10s. No daily freeze. It gets by enough for me to still using it although extra horsepower would be nice. For a daily driver of 7 years (upgraded SSD and 8GB of RAM), paid $2200 at the time, it sure is reliable.

You are wrong on value - Windows laptops have atrocious depreciation
I actually make a net profit every time I sell a MacBook within 2 years - buy under business & claim 10% GST plus get 30% company tax reduced. Then sell privately for more than what I paid after the company tax & GST amount is taken account of.

        • That's a great setup you've got going. I wonder if I could do similar without a business? Otherwise your comment is as good as somebody saying the laptop is good value because their rich aunt buys it for them.

        • @ZJack: the depreciation is still much better for MacBooks, regardless

    • Independent testing has shown that, pound for pound, MacBooks are better than Windows laptops.
Both in battery life & speed of use
It's the same issue for iPhone v Android - paper specs mean nothing.
Additionally, resale value is way higher for MacBooks, such that Windows laptops are a poor investment

  • how are these for basic video editing?

    • This is what you want for basic video editing. I've used iMovie to make some movies of my holidays and it's been perfect.

  • Save yourself ~ $400 if you can forgo the touch bar, 128gb of storage and a slightly slower processor:

This is 2015 model with 5th gen processer. 2016 model in the deal is thinner and lighter, has faster SSD, USB-C ports, better display and improved Force Touch track pad.

Edit: Price was reduced during the sale, down to $1338 with coupon.

    • +1

I would avoid 128GB SSDs. You will be wishing you had more space every day!

  • If you missed out in this deal, you can get the same machine from Apple (refurbished) for an extra $60
