runs windows 10 chinese edition just FYI,

    an awesome little laptop

  • +5

Lucky me it is not 8GB RAM, would be too tempting

    • -2

it's not ram it's the cpu that is lacking ….. open up a few things and these processors really lag.

      • +1

"a few things" being what exactly?

  • +4

You have to hand it to Xiaomi… they happily rip of Apple and make some amazing looking products.

    • +1

      What innovation!

    • -3

yeah but when you get to the 13" version the price is closer to a macbook air, this 12" xioami seems like a supplement to people who are looking at next devices up from a mobile phone for an internet devices but don't want a full blown pc / laptop eg i5 or i7.

nice design but doesn't seem cheap enough for the spec.

microsoft are releasing a new entry laptop for windows 10s and it seems better spec than this xioami.

      • Oh it's cheaper than what you'd buy here locally.

And comparing an i5 surface laptop with this that costs three times as much, is just ridiculous.

        • +1

Yeah the Microsoft surface laptop is $999 US and runs 10s. It relies on the windows store apps. And that store is very limited for app choices. You can of course buy one of the sub $200 US options that runs windows 10s too.

        • @Ronnnie: the Surface Laptop will ask you for an extra $50 if you try and run an app that doesn't belong in the App Store. And it will then update to Windows 10 Pro.

        • @daven1985: very true. Different price league though altogether. Point was that Garage Sale got it quite wrong altogether.

  • Chromebook v Mi Air.. anyone done any comparison?

    • +1

Well Chromebook runs Chrome, Mi Air is a full fledged Windows 10. It all depends on your needs.

      • +1

I wonder if it can run C&C Generals…?

        • +2

Asking the only real question here. Awaiting for someone with one to comment on results

        • +2

I'm waiting for GOG.com to release that game!!!

        • +1

I thought I was alone in this world… My heart is warmed.

        • Wait people still play that game? That game was the bomb! It let me be patriotic and play as a mob throwing cocktails! Who needs planes when you can just down building in seconds.

        • +1

@Wonderfool: The angry mob, the most pleasing and funny way to destroy a horde of approaching overlord tanks.

          AK-47s for EVERYONE! YEAHHHHHH!

    • +1

I'd at least go for the 13" Xiaomi.
It's only a couple hundred more usually and comes with more SSD space and dedicated graphics card (DDR5). It almost competes with a Macbook Pro Reitina 13 (from 2013) ish. which goes for ALOTT more.. but my 2cents

      • -1

same for me …..the 12" cpu is less than a lot of tv boxes, ok if you mainly browse but not if you want to run office 365 .

        • +3

Lol I run adobe premier pro cc 2017 fine and I have the 12 inch model. Granted I work mainly with 1080p footage not 4K.

And no TV box has a better processor than the core m3. To say it won't run office 365 is rubbish considering u don't appear to know how core m3 performs. This is about 1.5x still more powerful than the latest Apollo Lake Celeron and Pentium processors.

    • Mi Air can run Chrome but Chromebook can't run Windows.

      • -1

yeah i sold my chrome book on ebay 2 weeks after i got it…

heck phones these days have 6 gb ram…. 8 is minimum requirement nowadays for pc/mac

    • You seem to be misguided so I'll help you out a little. You state that 8 gb is the minimum and in some aspects this is true, such as for gaming, editing, photo shop and a lot of other heavier programs. This machine Is in no way designed to game, render or edit so it does not need 8 gig of ram. 4 Gig is addiquate to watch movies peruse the internet or write a email / document which is exactly what this machine is designed for. It's a light weight device designed to do basic tasks that you encounter every day.

And the reason phones are stacking memory is because they share that memory with graphics and a few other modules where as in computers the different modules have their own dedicated memory ( CPU, gpu, ram, sound, wifi etc etc.)

      • +1

If u have tested today's many badly optimised software then you will know 8gb is really required to future proof the purchse. One bottleneck for all computers is the access speed from CPU to ram and ram to hard drive. Super fast ssd would eliminate the lag in copying data from hard drive to ram, hence makes machines feel a lot faster even with less ram. due to working for large pc maker in my past. I have tested 1gb to 8gb in identical machines on win7, and concluded at the time, 2gb is enough and 4gb is desirable back then You can feel the os hungry for access to hard drive the less ram it has. Any one want to fire up multiple programs at the same time will need more than 4gb ram especially with latest version of windows 10. Os today also aim to load as much crap it think one may need into memory to speed things up the more ram it detects, pretty much like phone software is doing.
As for this xiaomi, 4gb will ensure one can do one thing at a time well enough, so don't expect to fire up eight browsers running complex content and various word processors files in a research project with no slow down.

        • Exactly, it's a basic system for basic needs. Though I'm not sure with this one if it's able to be expanded upon for ram / hdd like It's slightly bigger brother is.

But with the limited power of the processor I don't think ram or hard drive will be the handicap in this machine.

        • @Kiato:

I thInk you can change the m2 ssd, but that's pretty much it. Don't even know whether it has that extra m2 ssd slot the bigger one had.
The CPU will be the weakest link.

This is good for Mom doing online shopping

        • @jackau:

It does have extra ssd slot, and for this one, it's the pcie slot that's empty.

  • What would you do if you wanted to keep it for a while and the battery died seeing as it's non-replaceable?

    • -1

you will get many years of battery life if you look after it eg run off power pack when you can etc. i got 6 years out of my macbook battery before it got to the point of needing to be replaced. many phones now also have built in batteries …… they can all be replaced with the right skills but are not what is defined as " user repacebale".

      • True, my 2013 MacBook Pro battery is still in great condition as well

  • Why buy this rather than the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 for $320? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/306220

    • +1

the dell only has a 1368 HD screen the xioami is 1920, FHD.

    • +3

The Xiaomi looks a lot better in build quality imo, probably comes down to your finer preferences and budget rather than overall specs

      • +1

I want the Type-C charging port in the Air 12" so I can charge it with a powerbank.

Other than that the Core m3 CPU is a little faster than the Dell.

      • You can expand Dell's RAM to 8GB though

        • RAM counts for not much when the processor is far behind mate.

  • Could this run a recent edition of Hackintosh?
