The processor is made by RockChip, not Samsung and is ARM-based.

Very nice device. I'm seriously considering one over an ordinary Android tablet since this folds into a tent or tablet mode.

    • Yeah, I was kinda inbetween writing OP1 or Rockchip RK3399 (Apparently OP1 is a brand name owned by Google).

It's an excellent device, had one for a couple of months. Still a ways to go regarding Android apps on it but they're getting better all the time.

      • Why did you sell it?

    • +5

I preordered mine from Amazon and got it day 1 of it release. Wife wasn't happy that I made another tech purchase however she's now the biggest user of the device. Given we run android apps on it she's now asking why her Macbook Air doesn't have a touch screen.

Great device, great battery life, excellent screen, great build quality and very cheap! Highly recommended.

Great comment. Now your wife just needs to sell the MacBook Air and this will be a genuine ozbargain success story ;-)

Ordered one for my mother. Fingers crossed she accepts the change from her painfully old Macbook Pro without too much issue!

  • One of the big selling points with Chromebooks is cost but they seem expensive to me. What's your ballpark estimate of a regular laptop with these specs?

    • +3

There are not many laptops with 3:2 ratio screen and a stylus (in fact, the only ones I can think of are Surface Book and Surface Pro). I am guessing other manufacturers have something like that as well as I vaguely remember a lot of "Surface Pro" killers that were released. The thing is though, anything with stylus costs a fortune. That's the gist I've got when I was looking at laptops, things may have changed since.

I do think those two would be the main sales point of this model. Having a stylus support and a 3:2 ratio screen which would be better than 16:9 for documents.

a windows machine that is as premium as this would likely cost at least 700 bucks if not more. But windows is a terrible OS compared to the convenience of ChromeOS with Android in my opinion, having used both extensively for the last 10 years…

      • Why is Windows terrible? I think it's pretty great.

Only if you fail at computers.

        • hmm failed computers but passed mobile phones so get a chrome book ?

        • @Diji1:

          You're kidding right?

The screen specs alone can't be found on windows machines under $1k… Also full Metal chassis is more in the $1500 territory usually I believe.

        • The upcoming Chuwi 12.3 is metal Windows 10 notebook with an even better screen (Surface Pro 4 panel), and slightly better specs. It'll likely sell for $350USD.

Chromebooks are useful, but do seem to be slightly expensive for their specs in most cases IMO.

        • +3

@railspider: if the quality of the Chuwi Hi8 is anything to go by, there is no way I would trust 350USD on a stab at that.

        • @railspider:

Might be ok with a linux install.

        • if it ran linux then you could run libre on it and actually type a letter without needing internet access.

        • @garage sale: chromebooks can run crouton/linux etc

Was $450 not long ago. Then hit $419 and now dropped below $400 USD probably because the Samsung Chromebook pro is around the corner.

  • Better off with this if you can stretch a bit extra… most people seem happier than the Samsung Plus …

Was waiting for the Asus 302 Chromebook price to drop but now this one dropped so much so I went ahead.

Does the buyer receive the $5 immediately?

We have one and it is fabulous. Screen is amazing.

    • +1

I have one too. Screen certainly is rather good.

  • Anyone know if it comes with an LTE card slot? Not keen to rely on tethering.

    • yeah the need for internet is a challenge with all things google……no internet and it's a brick.

  • Got one to replace my 3+ year old Toshiba Chromebook. I'm looking forward to better screen quality and be able to use android apps on ChromeOS.

  • Back to $419

    • +1

      That was quick. :(

  • I am looking for a new tablet. I mainly watch videos offline. Do I need an active Internet connection to do that? I have read that chromebooks need to be online. What can you do without a connection?

    Cheers

    • No you don't. You can play videos offline.

      • Thanks for confirming
