They did not even contact me to advise that it was out of stock I had to follow up with them.

      Worst customer experience ever!!

  • New tabs and laptops getting announced today. Will use Windows 10 S.

    • +1

Just what we need… another damn SKU. Sounds like a Windows RT reincarnation

      • Yeah i didn't read too much in to it but they only allow software from the official windows store, however they are 64x which means wider compatibility?

      • +1

S can be upgraded to Pro so not much of an issue like RT was.

        • I got a feeling that the market will be flooded with crap/cheap laptops like the Chromebooks and it will be up to us OzBargainers to pick them up and install Linux or supply our own OS license.

Windows 10 S is not going to be very usable on it's own and even schools are going to struggle with it in getting their apps to work without shelling out for Pro/Enterprise.

On the plus side this might get Google Chrome and other apps into the Windows Store. Hopefully Microsoft will be reasonable and not make developers compromise their product to get it in there…. god knows Windows Store needs all the help it can get.

        • @The Land of Smeg: I reckon it won't be long before someone finds an easy way to have non-app store programs installed without the upgrade. If not the upgrade to pro is like $50USD so cheap devices will still be cheap.

        • @Mechz: upgrade is officially $299 through Windows Store but legitimate retailers $189.

Strange how they don't present Win 10 Home as an option. Most schools would run Windows 10 Enterprise /Education not Pro as well

        • @The Land of Smeg:

What upgrade are you looking at?

          http://www.zdnet.com/article/what-is-windows-10-s/

How does the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro work?

The upgrade costs $49 and is managed through the Windows Store. (It's possible that a valid Windows 10 Pro product key will also perform this upgrade.)

Once the machine is upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, the Windows 10 S configuration is not available.

        • @Mechz & @The Land of Smeg: What $49/$189/$299 upgrade are you two talking about? Upgrade to W10Pro is free until the end of the year. See Tech specs/Software on source page

          Tech specs/Software:
          Windows 10 S
Prefer to run non-Store apps? Easily switch to Windows 10 Pro for free until Dec 31, 2017.
Introductory offer: Includes 1 year of Office 365 Personal

        • @Mechz: thanks @Mechz @Alvian I think that this free / $49 offer is specific to Surface Laptop, which is already a premium device not the cheap ones which will follow. $299 is the standard price from non Surface devices, $189 $239 is MSY retail price

Edit: I was looking at msy oem price before

      • Windows 10 S can run x86 programs still unlike Windows RT.

        • The problem with RT wasn't so much the architecture, rather it being too locked down to the point that even if you could recompile for ARM (and some developers did manage to do this) there is no way to get it listed on the store unless you did a complete rewrite to be a 100% MetroUI app.

At least now they are letting SOME Desktop apps into the store (as long as it doesn't use APIs outside of a sandbox) but they have stripped out the essence of Windows (A stable platform that apps have been using for decades, which is the reason why Windows has been a success).

They can't seriously expect developers to rewrite their apps from scratch, because anyone who's going to do that would make it a web app instead.

They better hope that Project Centennial (win32) & Islandwood (iOS) works well. Project Astoria (android) is already dead

They've only announced Surface Laptop today if I am not mistaken. It'd be $1460 AUD for the basic model (Adding 10% GST and using exchange rate from Google).

By the sounds of it, Windows 10 S is more targeted for education purpose (in that you can only install apps from Windows Store App). You can upgrade it to Windows 10 Pro, so I am assuming it's more for those people who want OS more streamlined for students and schools. I think it's meant to be MS's answer to Chrome OS.

I don't think they will announce more devices today, today's event was more to do with Education stuff. I will be more than happy to be proven wrong though, SP5 is something I am looking forward to.

      • Is it just a Surface Book that can't detatch the keyboard?

What is Windows 10 S? Does it have the advanced features of Pro?

        • In a way, it is. It's a clamshell ultrabook Surface line up. Some people compare it to Chromebook Pixel (high spec for an OS that wouldn't require that kind of spec).

Windows 10 S sounds like what MS made to compete with Chrome OS. It had a lot of features of the Pro version, but it's basically a streamlined/culled down version of 10 Pro that cannot run desktop programs (will only run apps from Windows Store) and use Edge as the default browser that cannot be changed.

The event was for education stuff. I think MS released an OS that'd interest mainly the people in education sector. The OS is targetting people who'd consider Chromebook as an option.

        • @Oversimplified:

but it's basically a streamlined/culled down version of 10 Pro that cannot run desktop programs (will only run apps from Windows Store)

          ok, that's a deal breaker.

and use Edge as the default browser that cannot be changed.

That's just adding insult to injury. I use Edge as a secondary browser for alternative email accounts, and any sites that I have problems with on Firefox and Chrome. I don't like it as a primary browser though.

        • @lostn: I don't think the OS is meant to be for "average" consumers. PC manufacturers will make cheaper, chromebook like device with Windows 10 S.

        • @Oversimplified: You'd hope. But MS hasn't priced this thing as a 'cheaper' device to fight the Chromebook.

        • @lostn: It's like Chromebook Pixel in my opinion, which costed USD $1299 on release. They had really good hardware, probably too good for its OS. Though Surface laptop can be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro as well (free for first few months I've heard).

I am just quoting from an article but:
"Asus, Acer, Dell, Samsung, Toshiba and Fujitsu are creating Windows 10 S devices which will launch "in the coming months," with pricing starting at $189 (~£146)."

          http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/what-is-windows-10s

Also as an interesting sidenote, ARM Windows 10 devices were mentioned earlier this year. I am purely guessing, but Windows 10 S would likely be a better option for that kind of device (as Windows 10 S is more "streamlined").

  • I ordered 9 days ago, but no hint of delivery yet. Their website says: delivery 1-2 business days after payment

    • It is out of stock. I ordered on 30 th April and was advised when followed up on 3 re may that it is out of stock.

      Cheers

      • I ordered using this deal too. Does this mean that we wait till it is back in stock again, or do they refund us? I'm extremely annoyed by this as the counter said there were still hundreds left when I ordered.

  • Is it a good time to buy surface pro 4 now?

    • At least 6 months before they drop SP5 so your call really.

    • -1

Yes, it is! So cheap! SP5 is not a thing yet, according to Panos.

      • They've announced refreshed model for Surface Pro today.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwWs2jIy4js&feature=youtu.be

        • -1

True but still, it is not the SP5. They prob did that to keep up with the new chips, which is fine.
It is the same thing, a bit thinner and lighter. Good thing it makes the surface pro 4 more affordable for the ones who do not care the 7th gen chips.

        • @NickosFoivos: I think it'd drive the price of SP4 down further probably.

        • +1

          @Oversimplified:

          Which is good :)

I am personally very happy with my Surface Pro 4 (Core M)!
