Holy Moly! Does this also give you a life time NBN sub for free? At this price it should!

  • For the same price you can get a decent ubiquiti wireless mesh network going in your house with less issues / hassles, or get a tplink archer D9 for the best experience and value for money

Most phones / tablets and devices don't even support the full capacity of the current ac protocol at this point in time (speed wise etc)

Coverage might be decent with this unit but for 500 it's certainly an expensive way to improve wireless when tplink and ubiquiti (with some basic knowledge and know how ) are much better products for the cash

512 for a single wireless router is insanity in 2017

$150-$170 will get you an AC wireless ubiquiti long range so that will probably do just as good as this overpriced tech

Sure its cheaper than retail but 500 dollars for a router isn't going to magically make your shitty NBN or ADSL any better

Save your coin and go with something more affordable
Unless you have cash to burn, this isn't a good value router at all

I have not tried any ubiquiti product, but I can compare the Orbi vs Asus AC68U and Netgear R8000. The Orbi is in a totally different league of his own.

When the Asus and Netgear routers have a very decent range already, in some home, it just isnt enough (thick walls, long home etc).

I have installed an Orbi myself, and the setup was painless.

The AC68U could barely reach the first room of our granny flat. The two other rooms had no reception at all. I replaced the Asus router with the Orbi router, and placed the satellite in the very first room of our granny flat. I get amazing speed in the main house (100Mbps) and well as in all the rooms in the granny flat (65-80Mbps).

No particular setup requiered. Single SSID means I do not get disconnected when moving from the main house to the granny flat.

Is this product for everyone? Definitely no. Is this this product "cheap"? No. Is there a place for the Orbi in your home? If you experience similar issues as I did, then yes.

Edit: And to directly reply to this deal, it is a good price for the Orbi solution too. So +1 from me.

I'm assuming you have 2 places where 5Ghz can be used around the routers and the rest of the house is covered by 2 or more 2.4Ghz channels (I know nothing about this router just having two places where 5Ghz can work is great).

        • Yeah, if you want to comment on this, you really need to look at the specs. I beta tested this unit about a year ago, and so impressed I am with its performance, it's still in place now…

      • Does this just work similarly to a wifi router + wifi repeater?

How do they communicate between each other?

        • +1

It runs on a tri-band setup with the third band being used to communicate with each other the speed doesn't drop by half unlike a repeater.

        • @JLHC:
So it can't be too far away from each other otherwise anything connect to the second unit will have poor speed, is that right?

        • @humbala: Currently the satellites can only connect to the main device.

You can read more about it here:-
          http://www.techhive.com/article/3162400/network-router/netge…

        • @humbala:

For what it's worth, in my house a Repeater couldn't connect to my ASUS 3200 Router on a different floor. This easily communicates. Never dropped out and in an even harder to reach place. It easily covers my Internet speed of 30mbps.

There's a lot of just plain wrong in this post.

    • Review comparing the Netgear with some mesh systems:

Your wallet will be rooted if you get this router

  • But it looks cool!

  • +4

I must say, after trying so many different setups including POE / extender etc etc, this is the only setup that provides me painless internet experience.

No reboot no nothing for a few months now. highly recommended

    • Likewise. I tried every possible alternative. Nothing touched this. Hasn't dropped out since launch.

    • Seconded. I'm loving my Orbi kit. 100/40 without an issue and awesome wireless coverage at extremely high speed…

  • +3

Another point to note is the satellite has 4 ethernet ports on it, which allows me to plug my Nas drives in at a less obtrusive location. Have not tested the speed yet, so can't comment on that (bought one yesterday).

    • Speed can drop depending on usual factors

I tried putting my nas drive downstairs with the satellite orbi but found it was faster and more consistent even with the transfer of data to the remote unit when the NAS drive was plugged into the main unit next to my main media center or Mac which i run as a server upstairs. (Caveat) bearing in mind i was watching 4K movies from it on another TV plugged into the satellite

But the orbi is awesome i bought it at release and managed to get it for around 600 i nearly pulled the trigger on one from overseas which was cheaper but held out till it was released here with the Aus power packs.

it kicks it over anything else and the integration of other products from netgear work well too like Arlo security cams and the range you can cover is insane.

I'd never been so glad my nighthawk broke in the end.

  • +3

AFAIK the Orbi is better than the Google WiFi based on reviews that I read comparing the two + Eero and a few others.

Many traditional router makers are now going into this game so we should see a lot more choices within the next year or two.

    • This definitely is the better over Google. Shame as I'd too like a Google product given I'm heavy into Android.

Anyone knocking the price of this 'router' clearly has Nfi what they are designed to do. It's fixed my huge issue in a long 2 story town house. The top of the line Asus models pale to what this did.

    Awesome price.

    • i would have gotten this had i not invested in a netgear r8500 + powerline combo a year ago.

      • I had similar set-up. Sold it. Streaming Plex and YouTube upstairs has never been so easy.

  • This is an excellent product, have used it in 2 difficult houses and it works better than any other solution I tried.
