And god forbid you just report the old deal and have it opened back up again… You know, 1 day after it expired out (automatically)

I signed up last week hoping to get the first year benefits then cancel before I get charged. The $200 travel credit becomess available on the 366th day i.e. after you get charged for the 2nd year.

    • +1

That's a bit deceptive of them. On their site it say $200 Travel Credit each Membership year. , nothing about excluding the 1st year.

      • One of their agents confirmed that it's available in the first year, after the first statement has been issued & paid

        • OK thanks.

      • It's available for the first year as well. I own this card and got this confirmed with customer support.

    • You need to make the minimum spend before the credit becomes available.

    • I signed up about a week and a half ago
Checked the travel website and my credit was already available for redemption

I don't understand the referral links and op relation
Can someone please explain how this works

    • Sure when you apply through the referral link you get 15k sign on bonus instead of the 5k that you would notmally get. It also benefits the referee they will get some points for referring you. Atm referral link are randomise so that it's fair on everyone. However if there's a specific person that you would like to give the referral point to you are also free to do so as well.

      • +2

no I know how the referral system works - my question was in regards to all the random cards posted under the referral which have nothing to do with this deal

        • The system lists all American Express cards below any americanexpress.com card deal (12 in total), you just need to click random on the one applicable for this deal. It's impossible for the system to know what card applies to what deal so they are all listed.

7th down for those who weren't sure:

Platinum Edge Credit Card: random (307)
No annual fee (first year) + 15,000 bonus Membership Rewards points with $750 spend in 3 months + $200 travel credit every year.

        • The full list is a list of every available AMEX card, with a referral code from people who have added their referral codes to their ozbargain profile. If you click one of those links, you'll get - at random - an ozbargainers referral code to use to sign up.

        • @hamza23:

I have just checked that the bonus rewards point is 10,000 only.

Anyone knows whether that bonus rewards point keep changing ?

          Thanks

        • @pinghungwong:

Thanks I'll get that fixed/changed on our referral system.

        • @pinghungwong: Just did a referral, got 15 000 and they came before the minimum spending was reached

edit : I was referred I didn't get points yet, my parter who referred me got the 15000 bonus

      • Could you please explain, " if there's a specific person that you would like to give the referral point to you are also free to do so as well."

Can you explain how can I do that.

        Thanks

        • like instead of clicking on the referral link from OzB you get a link from a friend, or from me :P
or if you already have an amex you can refer your partner…

  • +1

Still better to apply via referral

  • Applying via a referral link would increase the amount of points you get to start with (in this case from 5000 to 15000) in addition the referee will get a bonus too
So it's just better for you and them in terms of bonus point and everything else about the deal is the same as if you went direct to Amex
In short - use a referral link as its better than going direct
The OP is being super helpful and listing a range of current referral links (from which a random OzBargainer will get a bonus too :-)

      Why so much hate?

  • Is this the card you all use with the cash back offers etc ?

  • is there a reason to get this card instead of Amex Explorer?

    • -1

Depends if you want to pay an annual fee

For myself , I personally have never paid an annual fee

Happy to wait for a $0 promotion on the explorer which I know will happen at some stage

      • I guess first free year with Edge is somewhat offset by 10000k points you get with Explorer? What about points though, both have same ratio if converted to say KrisFlyer?

        • -1

I usually hop around with credit cards for points the same way I hop around PHI for bonus gift cards

Currently applied for the westpac and anz offers for the points , both with zero annual fee .

Don't want to apply for too much to keep my credit rating safe

I'll wait for the next batch of no annual fee offers in around 4 months

I don't believe in paying annual fees for cards

        • "..both have same ratio if converted to say KrisFlyer?" No they don't. Platinum Edge (Accent) is 1:1 Krisflyer, where as the Explorer (Gateway) converts 4:3.

  • What is the value of 15,000 points?

Ie gift card redemption value. Is there a table showing approx. value?

    • +2

      About $100

But the value of the AMEX card is mainly with the monthly offers

    • If you use the points on the Amex travel site then that would add up to $150 in value.

      • Thanks. More keen on Coles / Woolies gift cards.

  • Can someone tell the real benefit of this please. I have credit cards but only because it doesnt have any annual fee whats the benefit of platinum other than travel benefits as i dont really travel.

Ps. I already have an amex just not platinum edge

    • amex offers .. mainly shop small where you save at least $100 (over 10 transactions) per year

    • you earn 3 points per $ at supermarkets and 2 points per $ at petrol station, even if you don't travel you can convert to gift cards or to pay off your amex statements. We travel so we wait the extra 15% per transfer and then we transfer to velocity

    • Thanks for your replies.

I was wondering why somone would prefer explorer over platinum edge. And i saw somone say something about no annual fee for explorer cards. Does that mean for one year or lifetime?

      • Equal to 82,500 FFlyer points sign up bonus.
I am not an expert and AMEX is complicated. So someone plse correct me if I am wrong. Explorer is $395 per year. It does not seem to have free 1st annual year fee offers. But it does have $400 travel credit, 2 AMEX lounge visits, and big bonus points for joining (The last was 110,000 = 82,500 FFlyer points) . NB different points/rewards structure to platinum edge.

  • Eligibility:

have a personal or household gross (pre-tax) annual income of $50,000 or more

Minimum credit limit is $3k link

  • Has anyone ever claimed the "life event" bonus of $500 for marriage, divorce etc? And does this stack if you have two amex cards and are paying for the insurance? Getting married, so just wondering.

  • The American Express® Platinum Edge Credit Card will have a $0 introductory annual Card fee for the first year of Card Membership. After the first year, the annual fee for the Basic Card will be $195. There is no annual fee for up to 4 Supplementary Cards. Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer. Bank-issued: (Australia New Zealand Banking Group Limited, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank, Westpac Banking Corporation) previous and existing American Express Cardholders are eligible for this offer.

I have a AmEx Discovery Qantas card. Sounds like I'm ineligible for the first year free, is that right?

    • AMEX are not strict when it comes to enforcing terms and conditions

I have 4 AMEX issued cards under my name

      • Ive read a few posts on AFF, that Amex are indeed clamping down on the double dips. I was fortunate to have 2 and gotten the bonus points last. I might test the water soon with the Platinum Edge (haven't got it yet, got the Amex Qantas and Amex Explorer previously).

  • Can anyone tell me how many points are earned for transactions using PayPal? Thanks
Edit: nvm, I'm guessing it's 1 per dollar

  • does anyone know if being a supplementary cardholder makes you ineligible ?

    • only a primary cardholder counts

      • +1

thanks I might try to apply then, and I might refer myself :P (I mean using my partner referral link)

        • I was approved :)

  • New to using travel insurance that comes with a credit card, assuming I meet all the necessary criteria for the travel insurance, will I get some sort of email or letter as a confirmation that I am indeed covered under the credit card's travel insurance?

    • From memory not, you just need to book your travel using your amex and that's it :)

  • Plat edge referrals bonus points gone down from 15k to 10k. Doesn't look like any bonus points for non-referral sign up now.

  • Has anybody been refused the first year waiver because they already have an amex?

    • No
Already have a Qantas amex and fee was waived

  • Thanks. I got mine with no annual fee charged although on the phone they told me I would be.
