  • is it possible to utilise this offer when getting a phone on plan, I am learning the hard way how much these edge screens cost :(

    • +2

Yes you can do so long as you pay for the plan using your amex card. Make sure your amex card is one of those offering it. unsure if the bank issued ones do the same

      • Thanks for that, so if i just keep paying my monthly bills using such a card then i am good to go! Come S8 and i would get the card :)

    • Yes, you can utilise it, even if you are half-way through a plan with an existing phone, or a new plan - see my comment.

    This is ozbargain not ozcreditcardfeatures

I think this is very appropriate for OzBargain. I wasn't aware of this and very happy I found out about it now. OzzyB is all about saving some coin. Thanks OP

This has been a feature for awhile now…..

    • Agreed. This is not new.

  • +1

Fail to see how this is a bargain? It's been around for a while for Essentials and Explorer cards…

    • +2

Some of us don't know it is available. If it might save people money then it is a bargain.

  • Also note that you'll only received 0.5 Membership rewards points per dollar spent

    • Still better than paying out for a busted screen i guess

    • Could you please elaborate?

      This is what I can see on the website;

"Earn 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar spent on all purchases5 except utilities, insurance, telecommunications providers and government bodies in Australia where you will earn 0.5 points per dollar spent" - which is pretty standard for Amex cards, but I believe everything else is 1 rewards point per dollar?

      • May be its the Explorer card that earns 2 points per dollar spent on everything except goverment…

  • Ensure you read the terms and conditions on your bill too - I know Optus and Telstra charge for paying by credit card

    • Not if you use PayPal linked to the Amex Card.. which might technically void this offer though! I'll go back to reading the T&C's..

      • Good point and is how I pay for mine, but would as it come as a PayPal payment to Telstra, rather than Telstra themselves, would that be enough for Amex?

        • +5

It goes through Chubb not amex and payment via PayPal is fine. Source: I pay my Telstra bill via PayPal and made a claim in February that was paid within 2 days.

        • Thanks for confirming

        • @ymidk: nice to know thanks.

    • No charge for Optus if you pay on your credit card via direct debit (non-direct debit is only 0.385% which is still worth it just for the points if you are on the Amex Explorer). I've been doing it for 6 months without any CC fee charged

  • What happens if I buy a phone privately on eBay with this, is it still covered?

    • or pay for your monthly contract with your American Express

    • I bought my phone from a grey importer on EBay and got my screen repaired under the Platinum Edge insurance so it should be fine.

      • Do they add to see a receipt or anything?

        • Yes it is like any other insurance claim. If it is a store they will issue you one, so will Ebay. If it's an individual you might have more problems.

      • I cant see this listed under the plat edge on the website linked in this post.
thats the card I hold, keen to know if this insurance is on that card as well

        • Not all Amex cards have this, as far as I know, the Essential and Explorer do.

How do you find out if a CBA issued Amex card has the same offer?

    • So is CBA issued card is also Essential card? If so do I get insurance to if I pay with it?

  • +1

If you are on a plan, and using some other payment method before, you can swap over to paying with this card, and cover will commence thirty (30) days from the date of the first monthly payment on the Essential Card.

To me, smartphone screen insurance is one of the most attractive features of this free card. This is not the only insurance provided by the card either; there is a host of other insurances; reward points (redeemable as cashback), and $75 application bonus. If you are interested to know more about the card, the Essential Card post provides more details.

  • Anyone know if this is available with the AMEX Qantas Discovery Card?

    • No, this insurance is not offered for the Qantas Discovery card.
