  • Can anyone report on the brand of panel? I know they were doing Samsung for a long time but I believe they moved away from them.

    • +3

They seem to change fairly often - I guess whatever is available for the right price at the time!

My Kogan 42" has an LG panel - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66111
I'm sure I've seen them specified since with AUO or Samsung.
I doubt it makes a huge difference.

In generally I'm pretty happy with the TV - some feedback:
      * The price was right! - $339 back in 2012 - when LED was a big deal
      * The tuner is slow but it works… and I run a TVHeadend server anyway and view via Kodi
      * The speakers are pretty ordinary - but I have a receiver so they don't get used.
      * Picture quality out of the box was a bit odd / washed out… fairly easily fixable with tweaking settings.
      * The first one they sent me was DOA - seemed to have a bad firmware flash on it (booted a Konka splash screen and then did nothing else) Obviously they replaced it for me.
      * The replacement then died just out of warranty - but Kogan repaired it for me free (suspect the TCon board died - they had it fixed and shipped back within 2 days) - since that was fixed it hasn't skipped a beat.

As others have said - I think it'd make a good backup etc.
For your lounge you might want to consider something else. Back when I bought mine the pricing of brand name TVs wasn't even in the ballpark - which made Kogan extra attractive.

      • I plan to use to it watch media in my room. Would you recommend it for such a purpose?

        • +1

What kind of media do you watch in your room? Closed door type of media?

        • @reon: I mean movies and TV shows. <5M viewing distance.

  • Is it possible to somehow run this as a monitor for my MacBook Pro, but in particular to split the tv screen in half so half is one desktop and the other half is the other desktop?

    • +1

I know there is programs for windows. Im not sure they work on mac. I will do some research and get back to you (if someone doesn't answer your question first)

      • Here's a good soul!

    • I'm not sure about two desktops, but OSX El Capitan allows you to split two apps on the one desktop. Does this help?

      • This is the only thing I could find. I can't find any programs that split a screen into two desktops.

  • Do you reckon these would do 5.1 passthrough over optical from HDMI sources?

    • +2

Sure, they'll probably pour your coffee too. Oh wait, it's just a cheapo TV.

Geez, When I bought my 42" LG LCD many years ago, it cost $2,000. I know, Apples & Oranges, but prices in general have dropped so much!

    • Indeed a fair comment paaj'. Namaste! :O]

haha thanks / Thank you, come again. wobbles head

    Is this tv any good?

    • +1

My Dad got I think this TV or a similar TV from Kogan about a year ago, if you look at it next to an expensive LG/Samsung/Sony TV you wouldn't choose the Kogan, but as a secondary TV or similar it will be a very good buy.

      • Good feedback. Thank!

  • How does this compare to a Chinese brand like TCL?

    • Tcl better

  • Bought one of these to replace my aging Samsung TV in the bedroom. The Samsung doesn't have a digital tuner and has 1 HDMI so isn't great. I have a ~$500 55 inch Kogan in my loungeroom. Besides 1 dead pixel I have no complaints. Certainly has delivered value for money.

  • Looks like the assholes have pulled this TV from the discount. Says this item isn't eligible under the "CYBER" code.

    • -1

      still working for me

      • Hmm. Weird. When I applied it to two items before (didn't complete transaction) it removed nothing from either item and just took $1.60 off the price. Wtf eBay?

  • Any idea when the next eBay 20% tech deal will happen?
