But this Pass is only Free until 23/03/17?
The season starts on this day. 5+ votes? Am I missing something?

    • pre-season & more focused on people overseas that want to watch some AFL

      • pre-season

pre-season is pretty much over too… Only a few games remaining..

        • can watch replays etc.. as said more useful to those overseas

        • +2

          @RogueWolf:

          can watch replays etc.

          of the pre-season…. how exciting…. ;)

        • +1

          @jv: your not wrong lol

        • @jv: useful for testing out the quality of the service without having to pay. Also useful for people wanting to test if the geoblock dodge works if they're considering this as a method to get the full AFL season on a big screen without having to pay the full fee for foxtel.

        • @braddsey:

considering this as a method to get the full AFL season on a big screen

Isn't it limited to 7", like the AFL app?

        • @jv: No it's not. WatchAFL Global pass pretty much gives access to Fox Footy online, so every match, and every footy program. It can be watched on a tablet and cast to chromecast or apple TV, or watched via laptop plugged into TV via HDMI. Entirely different product to the AFL Live Pass from Telstra.

Target audience is footy tragic's who get no footy because they live outside Australia.

    • it's been available since the beginning of Feb, but not really relevant for most of the ozbargain community so I guess it wasn't posted.

  • How does this go with a VPN?

    • Discussion on bigfooty.com shows that it works with a VPN. I did see a post a few weeks back where someone said it worked… but it's not something I'm concerned with given i live out of Australia. Here's one post suggesting it works:
      https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/afl-live-pass-what-a-…

This offer has been in place since the beginning of Feb. Probably worth signing up for the trial to give it a test if you're considering it for the remainder of the season.

if you are looking to subscribe for the season, this post gives the costs per club. Direct via foxtel is $189/season.

      • Direct via foxtel is $189/season.

Isn't it cheaper via Foxtel Play?

        • How much is Foxtel Play? I tried that as an alternative, but couldn't get it to work with smartDNS from outside Australia… though i thought the minimum cost to get fox footy was $39/month (could be wrong). this would be minimum $235 to get to the grandfinal assuming you use the free month in another post.
Also a question if Foxtel Play can be viewed on a big screen? WatchAFL Global pass can be viewed via appleTV or chromecast.

WatchAFL subscribed direct via foxtel is a 12 month rolling subscription (should you care to watch footy over Christmas). You can get it as part of a club membership package wich is valid until November (usually after draft/trade period). best price I think was $150 via Geelong, plus you get a $50 voucher for the Geelong club shop.

        • @braddsey:

I'm watching now with a VPN.

Having said that with my VPN it was continually buffering. I read on bigfooty that turning the VPN off part way tricks it so now currently using without VPN in Australia and works fine.

Would be thinking about buying but not sure if this loophole will be closed.

        • @treeman:
The smartDNS services (Getflix, overplay, etc) will probably figure it out if prompted, they can apparently work with foxtel go and you would think this would use a similar geoblock technology. Previously watchAFL was via Rightster so they may show watchAFL In their channel lists - but obviously it's only been running a couple of months on foxtel so no smartDNS has it covered yet.

        • @braddsey: I've been using this service for the free trial period and watched the first proper game on it tonight using Getflix Smart DNS and I can report that there were no problems. Was able to stream 4.3MB/s but on a ~2 minute delay, there was to much buffering otherwise. Chromecast is currently only working via the app, I contacted the support team (who were very helpful and got back to me quickly) and they have told me they are working on it and the website should be working properly very shortly. If it all works well then it should be great, however I still prefer the old Rightster service because I found out that they use the same links for the live streams over and over again with no encryption; so I made a VLC playlist that went through them all and found the correct one. Worked great and was 100% free. Oh well.

        • @realfancyman: would have been good to know the old Rightster trick when they were still in charge!

For me (living in Germany), the new service is much better. Quality & reliability kills Rightster. Almost as importantly it gives access to Fox Footy, whereas for about the same money, Rightster was only match access - and often the coverage would cutoff even before the club songs were sung. Having access to all the footy shows is awesome. I used to get it from some friendly folk who make it available - but I'm getting it all 100% legally now.

+1 for Getflix service though. I use them for other services, they're very responsive.

Edit: by the way, i appear to have free WatchAFL. I registered for the free trial and then cancelled. they charged me for my season pass even though i cancelled, so I contacted them and they gave a refund. I still have access to WatchAFL though!

        • @braddsey: I tried to post it but it was taken down for illegal/inappropriate. I agree though the fox footy coverage it much much better, definitely worth the money and I'd rather have it that Foxtel, even if they were the same price. However if you don't have a good internet connection then it's probably not the best, you need minimum 4.3MB/s to stream HD

        • @braddsey: > by the way, i appear to have free WatchAFL. I registered for the free trial and then cancelled. they charged me for my season pass even though i cancelled, so I contacted them and they gave a refund. I still have access to WatchAFL though!

Ha lucky, nothing better than a freebie :)

        • @realfancyman: Ha! No worries.

That's probably why it works well outside Australia… we get good internet. I get about 20MB download, 5MB upload, unlimited. For about 40€/month. Still rather live in Australia though!

        • @braddsey: I'm pretty lucky with my internet, I get 500gb with 50/10 for $80 per month, so this works pretty well for me
