        • It's a cheap desktop PC with ilo.

If only it was as simple as that.

It shares some components with a desktop PC (eg: processor) however it is very much in
the "HP Server" world as far as setup, config, drivers, documentation, ease of use, etc.

The average PC user would have extreme difficulty getting one of these set up, configured, OS loaded, etc.

          (PS: I own one).

It is as simple as that. Ok, so you put windows server SBS on it and sell it to a nan & pop corner store for them to track their stock. Or you feel adventurous and put esxi on it, and run a few underwhelming vm's in your garage.

In the meantime, I will stick to dl380's for enterprise / commercial use.

PRECISELY. Thanks for (finally) proving my point

This is a server, not a HTPC.

        • @llama: Lol, you don't read very well. I never said it was a htpc. It's probably a very poor htpc.

It is, however, a long stretch to call it an enterprise server.

        • @airzone:

I never said it is a HTPC either.

It's a lot closer to a (very small) Enterprise Server than it is to a HTPC. Maybe I use the wrong term "Enterprise"… I mean something other than a home desktop PC.

See, we are in a discussion that started with THIS POST. So, how about you explain the difference rather than being an ass and bickering with me about a word starting with "E"?

Since you are so exceptionally well versed in the subject, so why don't you stop arguing the point about one word and tell me the correct term for the server device you described in YOUR POST.

          Small Business server?
          Small Enterprise?

          You tell me.

I have one of these doing nothing atm. Might set it up as a backup NAS using Xpenology. A good idea for ya'll is to use this as a NAS, strictly to store/download files, and then use a cheap ~$70 Android as the front-end. No point streaming/transcoding using DLNA, that shit is old school, namean?

Also, I can vouch for these guys, received ma package in a few days, yaheard.

    • I reckon that would work well. I had xpenology set up on mine, with a sabnzbd package working.

I ended up dumping it to go to win 10 pro just because I needed other apps that were beyond xpenology.

  • Anyone know if the motherboard is a standard size?

    • Looks like its standard microATX. Overlaid an image of the motherboard with another microATX board, holes line up

I have two of these and I love them. They're pretty easy to get into, got great hardware for the price and have features like IPMI.

They're very loud on startup due to the use of a single fan (which is a hell of a screamer when it wants to be) to cool the entire thing but otherwise are ok. Only caveat is if you're booting off of a HDD instead of a USB etc. it'll only boot from whatever is detected as the first HDD. The cables are labeled so you can determine which drive this will be but it's frustrating as 1 is actually the first cable on the chain intended for the HDDs.

If you wanted to velco an SSD to the DVD drive area it's a bit of a pain as it makes the cable management more awkward than it needs to be. Other than that it is a good system which has 4 PCI-E slots, a replaceable CPU, expandable memory and an absolute tonne of upgrade-ability.

I'm using Debian 8 on one and Windows Server 2016 TP5 Core on the other. No OS compatibility issues thus far.

They are great boxes. Bought a couple of these just the other week from Warehouse1. Took just a couple days to arrive.

The G3240 isn't that bad either (about 50% faster than a base model Gen8 Microserver), but you need ECC UDIMMs (Not RDIMMs). No super quiet, but not loud after bootup either.

Get a ILO4 advanced license and you don't ever need to plug in a monitor/keyboard.

Only weird thing is accessing the RAID setup, I might be doing something silly but it appears to be, well, missing… I had to use the SPP iso to access it. (And then I gave up with fake raid altogether drivers and just switched it back to AHCI)

    • Only weird thing is accessing the RAID setup, I might be doing something silly but it appears to be, well, missing

There are a couple of different ways to access and configure the RAID. I have notes at home somewhere , but it's all documented on the HP Website.

    • ILO4, is that the one that allowing you to remote control the machine (using java on IE) including computer restart?

      How much is the license?

      • Found the answer myself on youtube :)

        https://youtu.be/MCoMN9KXSfE

        • Yes it has ilo, but not the full license,. A full license allows a full monitor display.

      • +3

Can get a license on eBay for about $30-40 or coughGoogle imagescough

        • What happen if you are not purchasing a licensed product? Limited functionality? Or just not supported by HP?

        • @televisi: Limited functionality, e.g. remote console will only work for ~30s after post. Licenses are sold as 1yr/3yr but that's only the support portion, all features are unlocked permanently.

    Great little server.
Excellent hardware, solid build, easy to open and add drives.
    Great ILO and dual NIC.
I run XPenology on it, tried FreeNAS, but used to Synology and find it easier.
Far cheaper and faster than a 4 Bay NAS from Synology or similar.
Only noisy startup and higher power usage.

    • Hmm I am tempted to run this as a nas…

    • Never heard of XPenology before.. Clever.

    • +1

Can vouch for Xpenology, but I don't think they are updating it anymore….

      • You can get DSM 6 on it, but its a bit fiddly, so I didnt bother.

    • —- disregard my comment —-

  • Can this only be used as a file server/media file streamer or can it be used for something else?

    • What did you have in mind?

      • I was just curious what else could be done with it.

    • It's like any other desktop computer really, do with it what you desire.

  • Thanks - Picked one up just what I was looking for

    • Same!

    • Has yours been posted yet? I ordered Monday night and still have not received shipping notification. Estimated delivery window ends Monday so does not look like they will meet this

      • They sold a fair bit of stuff, so are probably busy. Plus they probably did not have the stock to cover that many of these servers - their shop space is not big enough physically, to handle the stock levels listed on ebay.

On a good note the SSD I ordered from them, left the next day.

      • Neither. Ordered Wednesday, still no notification of shipping :(

        • I have ordered the same server from them in the past.
Multiple emails sent about tracking go unanswered.
Then the order just turns up.

        • Mine turned up today. Never received a shipping notification

      • Just arrived today in WA

  • This or a Microserver G1610T? In the market, mostly want something to play around with for self training purposes, such as with iLo (both seem to have) and other things.

Sounds like this one you might need to add extra drive bays to add more drives, hence driving the price up? Also looking to run ESXi on it, and im not sure if this one supports it as its not on the supported hardware list (but not everything is).

  • Cheers for the heads up about this deal. I've been looking for an upgrade for my N54L (running OMV) and was hoping that OzBargain would deliver.

Ebay showed 3 in stock, but after I bought mine, Ebay shows 'Last One'. Get in quick if you are thinking about one! Now to find some ECC RAM at a reasonable price.

  • Looks like it's all sold out now.

Edit: Actually looks like they have raised the price.

  • This looks OK with another 10% off "HPI [T1D51PA] HP800 G2 SFF I5-6500 8GB 128GB SSD DVDRW Windows 7 Pro"
I think it comes with Windows 10 as well.
    Link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HPI-T1D51PA-HP800-G2-SFF-I5-6500-…
    Says 3 are available.

  • I ordered on 27 Feb. ML10v2 has not been sent yet. Was supposed to arrive e2nd March according to eBay.

  • +1

Ordered mine last Wednesday, no notice of shipping but was waiting for me when I got home from work today. So they've probably all been shipped, just no notices?

    • Sorry, I ordered on 27 Feb. No delivery at this stage, not set to "sent" on eBay. Not sure how you can say "So they've probably all been shipped, just no notices?".

      • Because mine was identical? Still hasnt been marked as shipped on ebay, so im assuming they just dont mark them off as shipped against the system. Yours has been a while though, are you somewhere regional?

        • It turned up today. All good.

Checking back on Aust Post, it was shipped on 3rd March.

People are correct in that Warehouse 1 does not update item to "Sent", though they did after I messaged them yesterday.

No I am regional, eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

        • Thats insane then that they can get it up to sydney from melbourne quicker than they can get it to you. Regardless, glad it arrived!

  • I have one that i wouldnt mind getting rid of actually. Bought it in November last year, didnt get around to using it. Think a Microserver will better suit my needs
