I can highly recommend this phone to anyone, best budget phone out there

    • +15

Better to get 32gb/3gb ram though this has 2gb ram

      • +1

Any current Oz recommendations? I need one, but can only buy from an Oz seller :)

        • +6

The only real Aus option for the 32GB/3GB RAM version is Mobileciti, looking at past deals you might be able to get it for $350ish if they have some offer or there is an eBay code in the future. Aus retailers (TGG, Officeworks, HN etc.) are all selling 16GB/2GB RAM version only.

        • +6

          @Gershom:

Yeah, thus my comment wait for an offer and you might be able to get it for $350ish going by past deals (10% off).

$389 for Aus stock is too expensive when you can get it from HK for ~$293 shipped - almost $100 less. Local warranty isn't worth paying that much more on a $300 phone with no known common issues IMO.

        • +1

@hamza23: Should be able to buy it from Motorola's website directly.

        • +3

I recently purchased a 32Gb/3Gb model from MobileCiti for $389, free delivery, I had it the next day (NSW to QLD).
For me, paying the extra for Aus warranty (2 years) was worth it, as I am using the phone for work, and have tax invoice to claim come June 30.
Love the phone, great value for money, one of the few phones under $500 that support 2x 3G/4G sims. The Moto flavour of Android is very close to stock as well, basically no bloatware etc.

          @dheywood:

FYI Motorola and Mobileciti list AU warranty as 1 year on product and warranty pages:

          Warranty 12 Months(AU)

          https://www.mobileciti.com.au/warranty-info

          https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/euf/assets/downl…

        • +1

          @hamza23:
Yea, Australian consumer law says otherwise. Reasonable expectation of life is definitely more than 12 months ;)

        • @hamza23: Would you mind telling me where I can purchase the 32GB/3GB RAM version from in HK for this price? Thanks in advance.

          @Roemac:

Motorola Moto G4 Plus 32GB/3GB (Dual Sim) $293.85 Delivered (HK)

Also on their eBay store for $299/$305 delivered (links in that deal description). Prices have been steadily dropping lately.

        • @mgowen:

Must have only dropped in the last couple days, was $450 a week ago on Motorola store I'm pretty sure.

      • True. OS may take 11GB and 5GB left for use.

        • +9

I keep telling people - Note that since Marshmallow, the Moto G range can configure SD memory as internal memory, so you can beef it up all you like. My wife added 64GB.

        • @Gershom:

Does this only work if you have a super fast sd card? I'm worried apps will run super slow on the sd.

        • @dajackal: nope, it works fine.

        • +1

          @Gershom:
Can other Marshmallow phones do this too or is it just Moto G's?

        • +5

@tebbybabes: It should be available on all phones running Marshmallow & Nougat.

Click this link & read on from How to Adopt a MicroSD Card as Internal Storage
How to Set Up a New SD Card in Android for Extra Storage

        • @chadiwrx:
Brilliant! I totally didn't know about that. Thanks for the heads-up. This will be very useful when next shopping for a budget phone for the kids.

        • +2

@tebbybabes: It is up to the manufacturer to implement it. Moto does, Samsung doesn't.

        • yeah, bought a Samsung tablet, loaded marshmallow ….can't use SD as extended memory. Sony tablet is fine though.

        • +1

          @garage sale:
You can use it on Samsung but you need to format the SD card in a specific way first (you do not need to root).

My S5 was fine at first, but got progressively slower. The below instructions also work on other Samsungs.

          http://www.phonearena.com/news/How-to-set-the-memory-card-as…

        • @Gershom:
          @dajackal:
just not super slow card eg: clss 2 , any cheap class 10 is great

        • @Gershom:
Thanks for the clarification… definitely helps with knowing what to look out for then.

      • +1

I've got the 2Gb version and it seems snappy enough for me to browse the web and play Heartstone. Obviously its not a gaming powerhouse but its a much more functional phone than my old Moto G2.

      • +1

Is this the one with overheating problems?

    • +5

      But Xiaomi Mi5 better?

Although arguably different product (grey import, 5" phone)

      • +3

Depends, I bought it for the front facing speaker and pretty much stock Android

      • Yep different.

This is probably one of the best value local phone for 300-400 price range

      • +5

        A lot better

        • +8

Whomever negged me is a Moto fanboy or delusional.

        • @morgs640:

Specs of the Xiaomi are much better, surely.

But that's not the only thing to compare phones on, especially if the owner will never ever, play games on it (like 5% of ozbargainers and 70% of all phone owners).

          How's the reliability compare?

        • @mgowen: Hard to Know i am a former Moto fanboy admittedly but since switching to Xiaomi I have had less issues, obviously a sample size of 1 isn't enough to make a judgement. For the record i still love Moto just for the price the Xiaomi is much better.

      • +1

Also don't forget this has a dedicated memory card slot, not a hybrid.

      • even better, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3

      • Where should we buy it from? also is the 4G network bands good for here?

    • would this be a ok replacement to a Galaxy note 4?

My mothers note 4 stopped reading sim cards.

      • +1

was it the multi-fit sim in the phone? I once had the S4 and it had problems detecting sim card, just before throwing it away I found that it read normal sim fine and problems only happened with sim that has nano-sim cutout (sadly most sim card nowaday has this feature). Apparently nano sim is a little bit thinner than original sim so some old phones might have issue reading it because of poor contact.

        • worked fine for ages then just stopped working.
          no dual sim.

        • @Axelstrife: had this issue with my note 2, turns out as the nano is thinner, you can use a sim adapter to make it micro which adds a slight thickness to the SIM card making it usable on the phone again. Only cost a buck on ebay.

        • @BargainKen: phones been working fine for months same simcard

        • @Axelstrife: For me it was intermittent, i could get it to read them sometimes, not so much others. the $1 sim adapter made it more consistent. I also get the issue on my alcotel phone, the moto G3 and iphone doesnt seem to care.

        • @Axelstrife: go into telstra ect, say "I just bought my mum a new phone but need the sim adaptor. They will hand you a free one.

        • -1

@Slippery Fish: not to be rude but I've already said that isn't the issue and the phone been in use for months now . It's not the SIM card. Or the Adapter. It's the phone.

        • @Axelstrife: oh, I was just flicking through sorry. I just thought save the man a $

If your gona throw away the phone can you clean the sim readers contacts, it could just be a layer of crap formed on it.

      • Would be great, just a reminder that it has no pen 😉

    • Love mine.

      Brilliant camera, BTW.

    • I would get a Moto X Force if possible for $330ish over the Moto G

  • looking at this phone how is vs a lg g3 ? dual sim right ? and hows battery life ? my g3 is struggling to hit a full day charge now days :(

guessing it will be great on optus network ?

    • +1

Great on any network, definitely better specs than g3, go with this battery is average but overall good experience

      • i see it has dual sim can i use both sims at the saem time or i gotta have one inactive ? not sure how it works

        • +1

Both at the same time one 4G & the other 3G. Battery life I'm a light user & I get just over a week on a full charge.

        • +2

@chadiwrx: a week? I call BS. I have a 32gb plus running two sims. No way yours lasts a week. Not unless it's turned off for the first 6 days.

        • +1

@imnotarobot: No BS, I have tested it just on stand by & it lasted 12 days with one charge.

        • @chadiwrx:
          Define standby?
Legitimately curious how it can last that long without turning all radios/sensors etc off. Which is kinda useless…

        • @imnotarobot: Phone on where I could still receive messages & phone calls. Data & WiFi off.

        • +1

@chadiwrx: that is kind of crippling the phone isn't it… Most people wouldn't have data off.

        • @jsefrog: Not really I only turn on data on when I need it.

        • +2

Same here. I keep data off most of the time. I use Tasker to turn on data automatically when I turn the screen on, and periodically throughout the day. When I'm at home it knows to turn on Wi-Fi, and when I'm out, it's mobile data.

More secure and less battery use.

        • @surethang:
thats a solid idea (usually have it on 24/7 might give it a shot on my g3 (running nova launcher)

        • How do you use Tasker to turn data on

        • @othms:

Google locked down access to automatically enabling mobile data a while back (I guess to stop rogue apps doing costly things). So originally I used "Secure Settings" Tasker plugin to get around that. But I've read the author hasn't updated it in a while, so I don't know if that still works.

Now I just use the Tasker "Run Shell" action with the command "svc data enable" (and "svc data disable" to turn data off). Requires root

        • +1

          @surethang:
mine now works fine got it to turn on data and check email(aquamail)/fbmessenger when display is turned on then it turns off data when display is off tested and working :)

        • @surethang:
So with data off with screen off you would only get calls and SMS correct?
No using push notifications for any apps?

        • +1

          @dan76n:

          Correct.

But you can use Tasker to automatically turn data on periodically throughout the day allowing push apps to do their syncing.

Timing would vary based on your needs. If you like things sooner, you could turn data on say every 10 minutes for 20 seconds (depending on your app needs). Or if nothing is urgent, you could turn data on every few hours.

You can also use Tasker to force a sync if the push app you have allows it. But just turning data on would be enough for most apps.

I also have an override that leaves data on if I need something immediately, or I'm doing a big background download. I've not actually used this in months though.

    • -1

don't do the G3, or you get the bootloop after a few months

      • Have had a G3 since Apr 2015 - never once bootlooped

      • i stated i already had a g3 also ive had 0 issues with bootloops and with the tasker idea mentioned im getting great batterylife now :D (11 hours and going with only 2 percent used )

      • Dude, this is a Motorola/Lenovo phone…

  • +7

Thank you for posting this deal.

I purchased the phone from Officeworks for $358.00 in July last year on a credit card with price protection.

I will be able to claim back the difference in price.

    • same here. $349 last month

    • Which credit card offers price protection for this long (7 months) and that too for less than $60 price drop?? All I have seen only offer for up to 90 days max and with minimum $75 price drop!

      • +6

Coles Mastercard offers price protection within 24 months of purchase

Minimum price drop required to make a claim is $10

        https://financialservices.coles.com.au/credit-cards/about-ou…

      • +2

coles mastercard 24 month price protection. think they might've changed it to no minimum price drop but it was min. $10 before.

      • +1

actually i got paid for a $6 claim so i believe there is no longer a minimum

        • +1

          Thank you for nentioning this.

I just checked and they have removed the $10 minimum price difference requirement from the latest PDS.

    • +3

Hmm, interesting, just wondering, does that mean if I buy the latest mobile from JB for example, it is bound to drop in price by more than half within a 24 months period, and I'll then be able to claim the difference at the end of the 24 months?! That seems crazy good!

      • You still have to pay for the optional extra insurance.

  • I wish they sell 32gb version too

    • +1

16GB is tough, but if you're smart (delete unused apps, use Google Photos as backup, delete unused media) you'll be fine.
Plus for $300 for a brand new phone with 2GB RAM it's a solid option.
      Full specs HERE.

      • +8

Note that since Marshmallow, the Moto G range can configure SD memory as internal memory, so you can beef it up all you like. My wife added 64GB.

    • Depends if you need both Sims …..Do 1 SIM and memory card you can now use memory card for apps.

  • +2

Apparently G5 is just aroudn the corner… any idea how much it will cost when it comes out?

  • 4G+3G dual sim? Not not old 4g/3g+2g?

    • +2

      That's correct, dual sim 4G + 3G.

  • +4

Got the Nougat update on my G4 Plus last week :)

  • +1

Good deal. Recently bought the G4 play would have bought this if it was available. G4 play is excellent and this would be better. Only downside on this is battery non removable unlike G4 play.

  • +1

How is this compared to another budget phone - xiaomi redmi 3 pro 3gb ram 32gb?

    • +8

Moto has aust 4g bands and local supplier and no need to flash global rom.

Some people just want a phone not a new hobby reflashinging.
