I've got a Moto X Play and honestly it's the best phone I've ever had. Reminds me a lot like the original Nexus 4 with a better battery and camera (same as the Sony ones), plus runs Android that is almost stock. So good I got one for the wife as well.

That said this phone looks to be better specced for around the same price. I would definately get one, but there's nothing wrong with my phone.

    • +2

Also note that Motorola don't stuff around with many different versions around the world. Check out the bands that these things cover, it's almost everything.

    • +2

I've got the moto X style, it's on android 6 (it did an OTA to android 6 last year), and they have announced android 7 in May for global thought some carriers in USA are on 7 already. Motorola call it "pure android experience" so they are good with upgrades and keeping android generic ….. mine has all the Australian 4G bands unlike many of the chinadroids. Only thing that would have been nice is a finger print reader.

    • Hey Tissue my wife and I also have the x play. Do you have a problem with them re SD card use? Just can't get either of ours to work with cards. Looking for ideas to fix them cos
only 16gb storage ruins an otherwise good phone. Thanks

      • Have you tried formatting card as internal storage? Some of the Motos in my experience have trouble with cards formatted as external storage

        • Yeah tried that. Most of the time the card is not even recognised as being there and it randomly pops up in a notification it's corrupted and needs formatting. When I try to format it it just produces an error and disappears again.

      • Yep. One is stuffed the other works perfect. I bought both second hand, and the stuffed one worked until I did the Android 6 update.

Reading online it sounds like a lot of people have had SD issues.

wow, they've also got Moto Z Play (dual SIM) for $459

    https://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/moto-z-play-xt1635-…

  • Might be a pricing error as the 32gb single sim variant cost more than this.

  • $578.85 delivered for the OnePlus 3T 64gb, cheapest around.

  • +4

    $58 for delivery. That's ridiculous it's not a tv.

    • Agreed. Makes it much more pricey

    • There's 4 or 5 different options for delivery, you've only mentioned the most expensive one.

      • Nope when you go to check out $58 is cheapest option.

        • No, it only does that if you use the OP's link. Go directly to the eglobal website and find the phone. At checkout, you will be given cheaper shipping options, as low as $25.

        • @aja12:

$25 is normal metro delivery, $58.90 is 'remote area' delivery which it states.

          Remote area:

          Economy Express Shipping
3-5 working days delivery from time of dispatch $58.9
*There will be a fixed surcharge of AU$33.9 for remote areas defined by couriers.

          Metro area:

          Economy Express Shipping
3-5 working days delivery from time of dispatch $25

From past deals, they charge rural surcharge in some areas that you wouldn't expect to be defined as such.

    • Are you new to grey imports or something?

      • +1

It is the "camera shops" specifically traditionally use inflated shipping fees.

        • -1

          Yes, everybody knows this.

  • +3

I will grab it in a heartbeat if it adds a fingerprint reader…

    • Same here….

      • +2

what will be interesting is the Xiaomi Mi7, due for release mid year ……their add says will be released in Europe and USA. That should remove the need to flash a chinadroid to global ROM BUT Europe now also has reserved band 28 for phones, so we might be lucky…. finland and france already use band 28.

    • That would be the Z Force, which probably won't be released for a few years here. I have one coming from the US with a couple of mods, with the hopes it will last me a few years (unlike my two Samsung Edges).

    • this was a November 2015 released phone so fingerprint reader wasn't that popular at that time.

  • +2

    Motorola Smartlock allows
    - face recognition unlock
    - voice
    - can stay unlocked while you are carrying it (in pocket), but auto lock when left on a desk
    - unlock with trusted bluetooth devices. e.g. in your car.

    https://motorola-global-en-uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detai…

so the fingerprint reader ain't so essential.

    • +1

It's not just about unlocking the phone though, It is also handy for apps that can authenticate using your fingerprint. Eg, banking apps, google play purchases, etc.

      • +1

There is no added security with multiple weak locks. If phone lock is active, banking apps should stay unlocked, or use a proper password only for large transactions.

Fingerprints are a gimmick. Poor security - not secret, unhashable as a 4-digit PIN, but worse because you cannot change it!

        • +4

They arent a gimmick. They are convenient. Ill never buy another phone that cant unlock without a fingerprint reader.

        • I quite like how you need to authenticate again even after you unlock your phone. If someone uses my phone I know they can't go in and purchase something stupid in google play, or quickly check my bank balance.

        • +1

          @RohBoat:
          Tip:
If someone is borrowing your phone, you should have it in guest mode.

        • @manic: That takes too much time when you just want to show someone something quickly. Plus, I don't distrust the people I let use my phone, just good to know a workmate can't buy a fart app as a joke when I show them a quick video or something.

But hey, who cares. We like it, you don't. No point in arguing because you're not going to change our minds and I frankly don't give two tosses whether anyone else likes it or not, it suits me :) Case closed.

    • thks will try …..

  • band 28?

    • Yes according to GSMArena…there only seems to be 2 variants of this device, the Droid Turbo 2 which is the US version, and the Moto X Force in different storage capacities elsewhere…

  • According to Motorola, the XT1580 does have Band 28

    Source: http://www.motorola.com.au/products/moto-x-force

  • eGlobal has a '5% flash sale' atm so I just paid $333 - $16.65 + $25 = $341.35 (-$3.16 cashrewards)

  • just found in dwi the same thing cost aud 359 with "Free standard shipping to Australia metropolitan areas"

    http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Motorola-Moto-X-F…

in this case the eGlobal is 18 ish bucks cheaper but i wouldn't call it a bargain..

  • would you buy from eglobaldigital over harvey norman where it's $499? (32gb version though). Are eglobal the same as the awful horror stories such as camerasky etc or are they ok to deal with? how does the 4 year shattershield warranty work on a HK moto?

What is the australian consumer law stance on a mobile, i.e how long should it really last?

  • eGlobal is reliable?

    • +1

I just purchased it this week. Got it in two days in metro NSW. Played around with it and even checked imei online. All good for me.

  • Apparently they are out of stock until the end of March (or forever)! If you do not have shipping information by now I would contact them for a refund!!

I don't think they had any intention of informing me of the delay.

    • Happened with a HTC I bought from them. If it's delayed cancel it imo - they won't tell you unless you email them!

  • Thank you for your message
