Been here good 2hr day out

  • Great place for a day with the kids … and it is in the suburbs !
    Always love going there

  • "everyone’s favourite furry friends"

I'm pretty sure this friendship is one-sided. The visitors come and go as they please, the "residents" stay in captivity and subject to human interference.

    • And fattened up. Go in the afternoon and they can't eat what you feed them because they are so full from morning rush.

  • Been a few times in the past, great place.

  • In the fine print it says 'Offer expires on 31 May 2017'. Does it mean the Livingsocial deal ends on 31st May or do I need to visit the park before 31st May?

    • You need to enter the park before 31 May.

I think this offer is available up until 31 May. I bought a similar offer last year and bought a few days before the expiry.

You'll need the discount. Patting a Koala use to be free (as was patting snakes and other animals if you were lucky and caught them when the keeper was giving their talk). As of very recently it's $20 a pop for an "animal encounter". Feeding the kangaroos and wallabies was a gold coin donation for an icecream cone full of feed. I bet that's gone up too.

Charging for the animal encounter is "for the sake of the animals" of course. Because there was no other way to limit it like first i first served, lotteries, pre-booking, having other animals to pat etc. to continue without distressing the animals. When I commented on being unimpressed with the marketing spin on their Facebook page part of the marketing manager's response was that the marketing team is "deeply integrated into the operations of Featherdale". Says it all!

Also they use to have peacocks, golden pheasants and chickens roaming the grounds. They were "removed" by new management about a year or so ago. If anyone knows whether they were placed elsewhere of if that's a euphemism for culled, I'd be very interested.

And while I understand this one and it is for the welfare of the animals they have no flash photography all over the place where they didn't before. Makes getting stunning high quality photos in shaded areas much harder if you're a photo geek. Use to take my cameras and go for the afternoon. (And I didn't go completely flash happy with one animal…I would put the flash away if I could see it was distressing the animals…but if everyone did the same…) Anyway not worth getting the family pass and going for the afternoon anymore unless you want to deal with kids complaining that they can't pat the animals and why won't you buy junk from the canteen. Use to be able to keep the kids happy bringing a packed lunch. Now if they want to be hands on it's $20 a kid and they get to pick one animal.

I use to love going there with the family. Not anymore. Won't be bothering with the family pass this year. Another place that's become cash grab. What a shame. My first visit was as a schoolkid in the 80s. Clearly now geared to milking tourists who see it as once in a lifetime and stuff the locals thank you very much. This park is in Doonside which is not exactly an affluent suburb!

I haven't been for a few years now, so if above is a reflection of "new management" then that's sad
