Might be worth putting NSW/SYD in the title

    • +1

Yep I’ve just done that thanks for letting me know.

    • Yeah Adelaide hasn’t had an IMAX for many years now, sadly. Palace owns the location and they call the screen they have there now “Eximax”, still the biggest in the state according to their website.

lol even Bali has an imax now

      • +1

Yea, Nice screen I watched Top Gun from there

Personally I think $20 is far too expensive regardless of screen size.

    • Oh was event cinemas always the owner of imax?

    • Not to mention the reclining seats in IMAX…

      • I mean I pay $12 at my local HOYTS and get leather reclining seats? $20 for a movie is ridiculous, $15 is pushing it, $10 is fair.

        • Wallis in SA is $30 for reclining seats.

    • +1

      Right!? $20 is half price?!

    • +1

Last time there were like 5 people watching, normal ticket. Charging more is one way to survive? Inflation time less people spend money on the movie tickets.

    • Agreed. I haven't been to a cinema for about 5 years, but I'd never pay as much as $20.

Used this to book for the IMAX 4K remaster of 'SE7EN'.

If you've never seen it on the big screen, do not pass up this opportunity.

    • Ok so I'd pay for this. $20 that is.

Full Recliner, Couple and Standard Seats are at different prices and Wicked is pretty much fully booked :(

I go to the movies almost every week and have watched at many different places in Sydney.

Just last week, I went to Event Campbelltown (just for the Screen X experience), Hoyts Xtremescreen, Event Parramatta, and Palace Cinemas Leichhardt to watch Wicked, Paddington in Peru, Spiderman (they are doing a rerun of all the Spiderman movies, starting from Sam Raimi's Spiderman), and Anora, respectively.

IMAX is the best in terms of pure cinema-going experience among all cinemas I've been to so far in my life. The screen is really tall, seating is incredibly vertical, and the sound is very good.

Retro cinemas like Ritz and Hayden Orpheum have art-deco architecture and feel very welcoming but immersion in IMAX is something else.

Have watched Deep Sky, Furiosa, Alien:Romulus, Oppenheimer, Interstellar, and Mufasa:The Lion King in IMAX so far. For the right movie, IMAX is incredible.

    • Is the full recliner worth it at the sydney imax?

      • I'm 180 cm and for me it was really worth it.

    • +4

      Interstellar would be pretty spectacular!

      • +2

Phenomenal. It doesn't get any better, in my opinion.

    • Is Mufasa: The Lion King the right movie for IMAX?

      • +2

I watched it in IMAX 3D. I don't like conventional 3D but IMAX 3D was brighter and I would say Mufasa is the right movie to showcase IMAX's capabilities.

I read somewhere that normal 3D only allows half of the light to enter your eyes and IMAX 3D has the tech to get around this limitation.

They're also screening it in 2D in IMAX.

    • I managed to watch Dune 2 at IMAX in Sydney while on a work trip - absolutely amazing.

    • Where is the best place to sit in your opinion? For both IMAX and regular cinemas?

      • +1

I try to book seats in the middle of the middle rows.

It's very subjective. It depends on your height and your sitting posture. The way the theatre is designed plays a very important role. For example, I went to Dendy Newtown (Cinema 6, F5) and it was nothing more than a glorified home theatre. The space between the screen and the seats was substantial.

Screens 6,7 and 8 at Ritz are very small.

The seats inside Cinema 1 at Palace Moore Park are shit but I found the seats in Cinema 2, Palace Leichhardt to be comfortable.

If you're 170-180 cms, I'd suggest rows K and L in IMAX. I haven't booked recliner seats yet in IMAX.

Personally, I prefer Hoyts. Most screens have recliner seats, Xtremescreen is amazing (they have Dolby Atmos in Hoyts Entertainment Quarter's Xtremescreen), the Onyx Screen is very good, and I get tickets for cheap because I have Uber One from Commbank Yello.

          Thanks, appreciate the detailed reply.

  • Are the full recliner seats worth the premium at the sydney imax?

  • Do we have any theatres which are Dolby Atmos equipped in Sydney apart from IMAX or everyone has it but don’t show it on their websites as a feature

    • Just curious, where does it say that Sydney IMAX got Dolby Atmos? I only see it advertised with IMAX sound which i guess is similar to Atmos?

    • Reading Titan Luxe theatres have Dolby Atmos. There are some select Event V-Max theatres such as George Street, Hurstville that also have it, along with some Hoyts Xtremescreen theatres such as Entertainment Quarter/Moore Park.

  • Interstellar and Furiosa were both incredible at this IMAX recently. Can't wait to see more films.

  • Is event gift card accepted?

  • Given that an IMAX movie is typically $35 or so in Melbourne (second largest screen in the world too), this is good value.

Not sure I'd want to go during a big event though, due to the toilet situation

  • +2

I found the Sydney Imax experience quite underwhelming compared to the old screen which was much larger.

If you're watching a standard movie that is not in the Imax aspect ratio then you'll just be watching a letterbox picture that is no bigger than a Hoyts or Event PLF screen (in seats that are far less comfortable).

  • IMAX or Onyx?
