They're ceasing production of lancer by this August, read it on caradvice iirc… Mitsubishi want to be an SUV company it seems

That's only if you take out their agreed residual value finance. It's a rip. They iinflate the repayments to take into account any deffrential between the "agreed value" and market value at the time. You'll end up paying for the agreed value over the finance period.

  • Not bad. Ebay excludes these type of deals.

As the usual advice, don't just accept sticker price on a car, even the 'sale' price. As Spackbace noted, he can knock an additional $500 off without breaking a sweat. Other dealerships may go further if they have more stock.

If you are willing to negotiate, use the $15,990 as a starting point and make your way downwards significantly. Be realistic and be prepared to say no, and if you have the availability of a few dealers within a reasonable drive (i.e. those near a major city), be sure to check in with a few of the dealerships. Some are more willing to wiggle on prices for sales than others and are willing to push the price down further, depending on circumstance (multiple 2016 Swifts still on the lot for example).

For reference, my partner and I bought a brand new Swift (GL, 2016, Auto, Pearl White) for $14,250 drive away, including their accessories pack (included as part of the Boxing week promo), at the end of December. We did have the luxury of: trying a couple dealerships to get the best price, being flexible on colour (white was fine), and having cash payment ready to go. Whirlpool also proved to be an excellent source of information on car negotiations. It's not for everyone, results will always vary, but definitely worth a shot if you want to spend a couple of hours to hopefully save some money.

And yes, it's a great little car. :)

Some good advice. Another is check out what you want by visiting a few dealership. Usually a sales person will come out and greet you etc. Tell them that you are ready to buy but but not today and you will go and think about the best price and inclusions they have offered. Before you leave get their email address. Do this a few times with other dealerships.

Next type out an email with all their offers and add all sales people you spoke with so they can see what's happening. Ask them who is going to take your money by giving the best deal.

Watch as they try and out do each other. When you get another offer make sure you 'reply to all' so they can see that too.

I have done this for several people and saved big $$$

      • +1

I'm sure spackbace will pop in on this, but I'm sure he's said before many dealers won't buy into this.

        • Timing also helps. Do this strategy towards the end of the month / financial year / calendar year and the price will drop.

Sometimes you will get a new salesperson keen to make his/her first sale. You can usually drop the price with these guys quickly

Personally I think this is a great strategy because it is totally transparent and everything is out in the open. It eliminates the 'dodgy/shifty' element that are associated with car sales people

I would like to hear spackbace's thoughts, I noticed he/she +1 your comment

You did very well Jiffy. Just want to say congratz on scoring such a good deal :D

how is it a great little car? Its an absolute basic featureless matchbox on wheels. If saving $5 a week compared to other models, and being able to reverse park at 60kph makes a great car then good luck with that.

      • Compared to what exactly?

      • It can reverse park at 60? I'd buy pretty much any car that could do that. If it could, it'd have to be pretty good at going in the other direction too ;-)

  • The Mrs favourite car! Is there any way you could fit 3 kids + a Shih Tzu in the back?

Sort of on topic, so if a new car was advertised on the car yard for $40000, I should easily be able to negotiate at least a $2000 discount or walk away?

    • +4

      WOT?

      $2K on $40K is only 5%.

Salesman would be rubbing hands together and shouting drinks at the pub if you did a deal at that price.

      • So what % off would you be trying to get?

        • 21% max

        • Depends on the vehicle. If it's a luxury car in an unpopular colour you could save A LOT.

        • Its hard to ask for such a large discount when all the dealers are around the same price.

  • Do you guys think there is anymore negotiation after this price? Was thinking to submit an offer for $14-$15k but not sure if i should waste my time?

    • As far as car yards are concerned, you are either a buyer or a tyre kicker.

Sounds like you aren't serious buyer, so no salesperson will not take you seriously. Hence you are wasting your time.

    • +2

What price you offer is all dependant on:

      a) How quickly you want to buy
      b) What payment you are offering (Finance, Cash)
      c) Whether you are happy with what variant the dealership has access to

If you don't have the money and are looking at getting a personal loan or loan through Suzuki, you'll struggle to get better than the $15,990. They have the upper hand in this case.
I'd say 14k would be laughed at, especially if you aren't waving the wad of cash at the dealer's face right then and there. Thats a 12.45% discount offer and with a vehicle that would be aggressively priced, won't be seriously considered.

If you have the physical cash and can buy at the time, and are happy with white, 2016 basic model, then 15k-15,250k should settle the deal.

If a company decides to call a car "Swift" then it probably isn't!

    Nah. Still a crap car

I remember nearly 20 years ago Hyundai made a name fot themselves selling Excels for 13k. That was considered very cheap back then. But no air con and manual only too.
Im surprised how cheap we can still buy cars for in Australia. 15k or even less for this Suzuki is amazing when you think about the Excel.

    • I paid $19990 for a new Pulsar in 92 so yes new cars are much cheaper now then they were 25 years ago

    • Also the excel was a death machine with very weak frames if I recall correctly. The Swift most likely has a higher ancap rating

  • -2

That's not true, these are made in India check the seal label near drivers door

    • -2

So it's not Japan then. Kinda knew that's the case it's Thailand or India

      • -2

Parts of the sport model might be made in Japan.
With Renaults only the sport models are made in the Dieppe France.
The rest are south Africa or something.

    • +6

      Wrong car

Swift is fully Japanese. As is Grand Vitara and Ignis.
      Celerio, Baleno - India
      S-Cross, Vitara - Hungary

      • +1

Yes I can confirm my Suzuki is Japanese made. They were made in Thailand for a short period but moved back to Japan.

  • New gl auto swift is $20k plus on road costs in nz. I thought nz had lower car tax and cars are supposed to be cheaper here :(

    • New cars - no.

      3 year olds - yes.

  • Entered my postcode in the pop up box (as requested) and was advised that there are no dealers in my suburb.
    I guess I can't buy one then
(perhaps the deal is limited to those people that effectively have a dealer as a neighbour)

  • Number of movies made named "Suzuki Swift" starring Matt Damon: 0.

    No deal!!

  • Totally new model Swift is due out very soon. Use it as bargaining power on this current (soon to be old) model.

    • In may yes

Most dealers don't have lots of Swifts, so aren't going to care about whether it sells now or in April

  • I remember last time I went to a dealership with 'free auto', I asked for a manual and they were still cheaper. Reckon that'll be the case for this deal?

  • +1

My Swift GL is 3 years old now and has been great. Not a single issue. Weird how I never see guys driving this car. I'm tall and this was the only small hatch that felt roomy enough. It feels like a full sized car. If I had my time again I'd get a manual or the sport because the auto can be sluggish. Sometimes I want to over take and I put my foot down and nothing happens…

  • Between this deal on the current Suzuki, the new GLX Ignis and the new Suzuki Swift coming out in May which is the better car?

    • Don't know specs on the new Swift so can't say as yet!

The GLX Ignis is better, but $4k more

  • Probably better to wait for the new shape

  • Hi guys I'm a first car buyer and have very limited knowledge about cars, people around all told me to get a corolla or i30, how does this little swift compared to those two?
    All opinions appreciated!

    • For starters, you won't find the other 2 for this price ;) depends what size car you want

      • Ok that was a boob question, so how does this car compared to Toyota yaris and i20? :)

        • Try all 3 and see what you think yourself :) The Toyota only gets a 3yr warranty vs 5 on the Suzuki and Hyundai, for starters

        • @Spackbace: Hi again, spackbace. I am quite interested in the GL Navigator model actually, can you share some ideas what's the best price I can get from dealers without offending them? many thanks!

        • @ltq19900310:

          Auto or manual?

The Navi model is rare as hens teeth currently, so depending on colour choice and how many the dealer has will affect the amount of wiggle room

        • @Spackbace: I'm after auto and flexible on colours. But $1500ish more upgrade from gl standard to navigator version, worth it or not?

        • -4

@Spackbace: mr employee knows stuff all, being in the biz, you should have all the info like airbags, power/weight ratio, features etc ready to fall out your mouth!!. Ive been researching little cars for only 3 weeks whilst looking for the daughter's first car, and i can tell you what size hex bolts attach the doors to the body

        • +3

          @itsdanthaman:

And general opinions, comfort etc are all subjective.

Specs on paper aren't the be all and end all. Only you know what you prefer.

        • @Spackbace:
Toyota resale value will be much better and the replacement parts will be cheaper. I've owned a Suzuki Swift before but prefer the Toyota Yaris.

        • @Springfield:

Check resale on a Swift then you might want to change that statement.

        • @Spackbace:
The statement stands, you work for Suzuki of course you are going to say that. I don't mind one way or the other, this has been my experience.

        • @Springfield:

I see trade values and sale prices on used cars, hence my comment.

Swift loses about $1000-1500/year, very strong for a car of its price/size.

  • -1

Will the 2017 model have those stupid vertical handle on the rear doors?

    • Yep. http://www.suzuki.co.jp/car/swift/

But why the hate? Alfa handles are the next best thing to gull-wing or suicide doors.

Which is why Nissan put them on its Terrano/4Runner equivalent thing.

Fact is that they are just better, if harder to understand. All cars should have them as they are better aerodynamically and are neater. If a designer wants to make a 4 door look more sporty, or like a two door, its about the best place to start…

Thing is, does the new model have drum brakes like those that used to come on the previous model?

      • Thing is, does the new model have drum brakes like those that used to come on the previous model?

Probably, it's a cost-cutting thing in entry level models (GLX has discs all round).

Besides, the braking force of the rear brakes of a FWD car is pretty negligible…

      • -1

        But why the hate?

Reduces the size of rear windows. Even the Mrs had to agree that the kids would hate not having much of a view out of that tiny rear window.

The whole idea of getting a suzuki swift was impractical for us as a family of 5 + pets anyway.. even as a secondary car. The only reason I was even entertaining the idea was because I got my favourite car, despite it being not quite big enough now that our family has expanded to include a new bub, and felt that, in the spirit of fairness, I should be more open-minded with her choice. Yeah, nah. One of us needs to be practical and think of the children and it's going to have to be her :)
