No Fee (Save $5.95) on $88 EFTPOS Cards in Woolworths (In-Store Only)

1290

Was in Woolworths, Marden, today and saw the gift card stand decorated with banners that said no fees (save $5.95) on $88 eftpos cards. All I know is that it said that the card is accepted wherever eftpos is accepted.

Was too lazy to find out the expiry date…

Checked online and no sign of the deal or the card…so just an in-store thing…

Main attraction is the ability to consolidate your wish/dan murphy cards into these to extend expiry AND increase versatility (need to use self checkout machines)…thanks to "Turd"

  • is it activated instantly?

    • Takes up to 24hours

    • +3

      Instant in my experience

  • +3

am i the only one or just not finding this is not really a great deal someone suggest

    • +3

If you use a 7% off e-giftcard to pay for them. It's a saving of $6.16! Can spend it anywhere that accepts debit cards.

    • +7

It may not be good for you but there are people out there with Amex cards with minimum spend requirements and/or with near expired wish/Westfield/dan murphy cards. What better way to buy eftpos cards with 1 year expiry and fulfill your spenditure hurdle with your purchase power remaining almost the same or getting even better?

Besides, I'm sure there would be families who want to purchase this as a gift.

      • +2

Maybe 5-7% min no brainer is not a lot for people. but 5% of a avg 600k home is a lot. 30k. So go figure.

    • +2

Use a credit card to buy eWishcard (save 5% + credit card points), use eWishcard to buy this card, and use this card to pay for everything including your utilities bills (save surcharge fee on credit card payment)

      • In my experience it is difficult paying bills at a physical eftpos terminal in $88 lots.

        • +1

Why? I would like to please pay $88 with my eftpos card, thank you.

        • cashier refused to split the amount

        • +4

          @bandana: lazy

        • +1

Just go to Australia Post or LPO. They're happy to do this. I used to split between ING and Credit Cards all lthe time to maximise the 2% plus points over $100.

I go even further… but i won't talk about it here since i've been negged…

  • +2

So what's stopping you from getting am $88 gift card at 5% off from Cash rewards, buying this, using this to buy another $88 gift card, rinse and repeat? A lot of effort but you'd end up with extra cash.

    • +2

I don't think you can. This $88 card should be used instore only

      • Ahh right. I thought it was an online one like I got from Harvey Norman once.

        • Nope, it's a eftpos card. Not vpay.

        • @Turd: Cheers!

    • that only works if the EFTPOS card itself is at 5% discount, but it's not. So you get the %5 from cash rewards on your first one but then if you use that EFTPOS card at $88 to buy a $88 card…. you're breaking even.

    • +2

Oh the good old days at Big W.

    • This generally can't be used online as it is neither VISA nor MasterCard, correct?

      • Correct, EFTPOS!!

    • +1

Nothing! I'm doing it right now and I'm 100% sure others are already doing it

  • Kjng hei fat choi

  • None in Town Hall Sydney.
Curious since it has the highest turnover of any store in Australia, and is also close to Chinatown ?!?!?!

    • +1

None at the met centre or any of the Ww metros in Sydney CBD either - to save everyone the trouble of looking. Apparently this got ozbargained early this morning.

      • Not valid at Metro stores anyway according to the catalogue fine print.

      • None at Chatswood, Hurstville or Campsie either. Haven't been there, just extrapolating…

        • Try Ipswich in QLD?

        • @Turd:

There are heaps at Inala store.

    • yeh i checked this morn too. they had no idea what i was asking about

  • When did Woolies start charging fees for eftpos?

    • +1

Never, but these are prepaid eftpos cards issued by whoever and they always charge a $6.95 fee. Prior to this offer there was a $100 card. Wasnt as popular.

  • None at Wynyard Woolworths. Staff told me so one came in and sweeped it all. :(

    • That one is a metro one right?

It says not available at metro stores

      • Yes metro one. Staff told me they were available this morning, it had signs on the wall.

        • They must have changed it, the catalogue at 6am this morning said metros were not included.

This means even more stores and heaps of stock for people to get lifehacks 5-50% off!

    • Probably an ice dealer changing his dirty cash to card.

      • or a quiet ozbargainer who works in the area and got cards early. early bird gets the worm. I got mine at 7am when store opened.

  • +1

I wonder what happens to the money when it "expires". I suppose Woolies just tosses the $88 into a bin and incinerates it.

    • Woolies already got their money, the company who issued this card will get the money. aka Blackhawk Network Australia.

  • ok im confused, whats the ppint of buyign these when you can get 5% off cashrewards

unless you have amex statement credits to work with or have heaps of gift cards from previous deals that are nearing expriation

    • 5% cashrewards is only lifehacks @woolies. This is lifehacks at all stores!!

Yes I used prev wish cards to obtain mine as well. Spent 20mins typing in like 25 wish card codes at 7am! lol checkout staffwas like o.o

      • oh so these eftpos cards are eseentialy debit cards that can be used anywhere you can use eftpos?

        • That's what eftpos cards are. :)

        • @Turd:

awesome! no wonder people are buying them !!

Iassume people are getting them to use up older gift cards and for flexibilty of using them everywher!

        • @hellohello123: Yea. I had like 20 $50 wish cards, kinda pita to use them all. SO this is better I guess!

  • My local has heaps for the last few days and yesterday.. will be interesting to see what its like tonight

    • +1

      ZERO!!!

I saw some at my local too I was actually laughing about it thinking whod' buy them $88 + $6.95 fee.!!
In the end turns out I bought them, But no fee!! heeeeee

  • Can I use Westfield gift cards to buy these?

    • +2

Yes But what is the point? Westfield gift cards are already EFTPOS cards. So a bit of a circle jerk, You do not get woolies reward points on these. Only thing I see you getting is the fuel 4c / L off and a lot of wasted time.

Better to let others buy it. Use Westfield cards as you would eftpos.

      • Have u tried Westfield gift cards outside Westfield? Does it work just like EFTPOS?

        • Why would I lie. :)

        • @Turd: Haha, thanks, just want to make sure. Was thinking to try at petrol station but always forgot to bring the cards from Amex offer last time :(

        • @Turd: https://www.westfieldgiftcards.com.au/Online/Information/Abo…
according to westfield i can only use them in the shopping centre, you might be thinking of a westfield xs gift card which is what you explained

        • +1

@TheButLover: oh okay, dont want to be too rude but have you tried a red w gc outside of westfield? I have and can 100% say they work, there is also a thread about this on ozb.

I know of the extra $2 xs w gc, they $4.95 fee is a rip off for the same product just marketed differently.

        • @Turd: nah, havent tried it but i will now! thanks mate

        • @TheButLover: :) btw sign up to the macquaire bank account and get $40 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/289240

Using any one of these referrals. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/macquarie_referrals

          =)

        • i've been using the red westfield card outside westfield, and just did at Aldi..

        • @annielee:
Aldi automatically slaps 0.5% surcharge when paying with these red Westfield cards despite selecting savings on the terminal, so i go back to paying them cash from the $200 withdrawn from ING card + 50c rebate

        • @bonz: Isnt that coz it is eftpos?

        • @Turd:
the surcharge should only apply to credit transactions this one says debit/saving, no surcharge when paying from saving account

        • @bonz: interesting, will take note next time!

        • @Turd:
My experience was with the WF gc, @JohnHoward mentioned no surcharge @Aldi with these cards so I'll try this one out too, only managed to score the last one this arvo after work

        • just re-checked my aldi receipt, no surcharge at all..since its from savings (eftpos) and not credit.

  • Can someone please remind me why I would like to pay extra to get a gift card, especially considering almost all other gift cards are free on additional fees and charges?

    • +1

Other gift cards are store gift cards they are not VISA or EFTPOS.

VISA or EFTPOS always has fees due to the providers wanting to make money for "providing" a service,

  • +1

"No gift cards can be bought through self-serve counter" at my local woolies. :(

    • +2

Unfortunate. Most likely to reduce fraud. Just buy them at the counter? No real issues.

Which one so people can avoid.

      • -4

Which one so criminals people can avoid?

        • Why? Is it a crime to buy a gift card at self serve? That's racist!!! Im dobbing on you.

    • Mine worked, no assistance required at all.

  • Then the woolies staff will say can not buy gift card using gift cards.

    • YMMV

  • None seen at Macquarie Centre

    • Probably all gone or purchased by early bird uni students?

  • +3

Seems like availability is low from the comments.

    Anyway great for:

    • 5% discount everywhere via cashrewards.
    • Amex Platnium Edge 3x points for shopping at Aldi :)
    • +1

Nice, didn't think about using eftpos cards at aldi!

  • Okay so I just went to Hackham Woolworths for my weekly shop. I only had $40 left on my 5% gift card so didn't buy any but they had 30 left.
Someone had put Google Gift Cards on top of them though so not sure if someone is planning on coming back or not so get in quick! That was about 30 minutes ago.

    • Also they don't have self serve check out there so not sure on your chances of these being let through.

  • -6

This is getting towards fraud… But 5% of wish eGift cards into these??

    • +4

      How?

      Who are you defrauding?

      Please explain!

Are you one of those Westfield or Harvey Norman workers who prevent amex users from buying westfield and vpay cards?

      • -3

The difference is it says clearly in terms and conditions you cannot use a store eGift card to load a visa gift card.

When it's not in the terms, I agree, they should honor it and update terms if required… But this one is quite clearly set out as unlawful under their eGift card terms and conditions. Wrongful or criminal deception with the intention of financial gain is fraud.

        For reference:

Store eGift Cards cannot be refunded or used to obtain cash. You cannot use your Store eGift
Card to make a credit card payment, to load a Woolworths Money VISA® Gift Card, Woolworths
Everyday Money Reloadable Prepaid MasterCard or other transaction account deposits

        • +3

Im not a lawyer or anything but try getting fair trading on it..

You cannot use your Store eGift Card to

          1. make a credit card payment,
          2. to load a Woolworths Money VISA® Gift Card,
          3. Woolworths Everyday Money Reloadable Prepaid MasterCard or
          4. other transaction account deposits

Buying a "product" which the store is selling even in their catalogue is not one of the above.

        • -1

          @Turd:

to load a Woolworths Money VISA® Gift Card

Woolworths Everyday Money Reloadable Prepaid MasterCard

You're relying on the fact it's not clearly worded that purchasing a preloaded card is considered as loading it still. I'm also quite sure it says the value is loaded on at checkout on the back of these eftpos cards, further nullifying this technical.

        • @dyl: Those two you bolded are actual products, none of which are the current $88 EFTPOS Card.

It is all about wording and interpretation. Such as for Harvey Normans and Westfield staff when interpreting the recent AMEX deals.

          *sigh

Im trying to give people savings of 5% - 50% life hacks. TO survive in Sydney without having to get a better job or even MOVE out of Sydney like the members of parliament have said,

        • Purchasing a product (this pre-loaded EFTPOS card) using a store gift card is definitely not fraud. You are not paying a CC bill or loading any card. So those t&c are irrelevant

        • -3

@Infidel: does it mention on the eftpos cards "no value until activated"? Doesn't take a good lawyer to argue this means it's being loaded at the register.

That being said, Woolworths isn't going to take someone to court over this… just be aware if they have the upper hand they are within their legal right to take action. For example if you purchase this from a $100 eGift card, they may force you to forfeit the $12 due to the breach of terms.

Tl;Dr: Legally, you're more than likely in the wrong. If it went to court you'd be lucky to find a judge who rules in your favor.. Though it won't go to court over ~$4.50 difference. Morally, it depends - if you need it, go for it.. if not, probably should give it a miss. Overall, if you're going to use this method, buy $88 eGift cards at a time and keep it on the downlow.

        • @dyl: All $88 cards are all sold out

  • Woolies Brisbane Airport all sold out - staff were helpful, told me a guy came in and bought them all in one go. Presumably an Ozbargainer :) Hopefully stores will restock given the promo was for 25-31 Jan, can only hope

  • Can you use these cards for Online VPN purchases? Because lots of talk that PIA don't take these cards?

    • They are EFTPOS cards

  • One question, hope someone can help. People mention trouble with buying giftcards with giftcards in Colesworths. What is the policy about buying giftcards with EFTPos card?
    Any experiences? Thanks

    • +1

Read the whole thread…. There is heaps and heaps of information.

Lifehacks is about finding out yourself.

    • For those who might want some confirmation, I tried buying a Coles giftcard using an EFTPos card (bought using this deal). I deliberately used the manned counter, and even pointed out to the checkout person, that I am using an EFTPos card.

No objection whatsoever and no issue. Hope this helps someone.

Only one inconvenient thing about using EFTPos card, unlike the Coles/Wish cards that provide a balance after a transaction at the respective store, a balance is not provided after the EFTPos card is used. I suppose one has to make a note about the balance.

      • +1

To check your card balance go to:

        https://giftcards.indue.com.au/theperfectgiftcard/

        BAM DONE!

        Loads to date: $88.00
        Purchases to date: $0.00
        Available Balance: $88.00
        Purchased Store Location :
Card Purchased Date: 25 Jan 2017
Card Expiry Date: 25 Jan 2018

        • +1

this is the inconvenience blue sky was talking about, you have to key in two lots of numbers. I get around this by paying for a transaction that's higher than the gc value and the balance from my amex, the gc then goes straight in the bin

        • @bonz: not too bad I guess! Remember save 5 to 50%!

        • @Turd:

          5 to 50%

          5% i get it but 50% ? how ?

        • @bonz: hard to say but various methods over the years.

At least min 5% off life hack I guess or 7 with no cc fee from potm.

          Etc etc…
