No Fee (Save $5.95) on $88 EFTPOS Cards in Woolworths (In-Store Only)

1290

Was in Woolworths, Marden, today and saw the gift card stand decorated with banners that said no fees (save $5.95) on $88 eftpos cards. All I know is that it said that the card is accepted wherever eftpos is accepted.

Was too lazy to find out the expiry date…

Checked online and no sign of the deal or the card…so just an in-store thing…

Main attraction is the ability to consolidate your wish/dan murphy cards into these to extend expiry AND increase versatility (need to use self checkout machines)…thanks to "Turd"

This is part of Lunar New Year Deals for 2017

$88 - What an odd amount. I'm going to assume it's a Chinese New Year promotion.

    • 88 means luck in Chinese, like how 666 means devil in English.

      • +2

like how 666 means devil in English.

        No it doesn't

@dragonindespair: Revelation 13:18 (so google tells me)

          @ozy:
666 is the number of the name of the antichrist who will have satan indwell his body. Jesus adds up to 888 since Greek letters were used as numbers.

        • @ozy: its Jewish numerology. Some belive it to be 616 which was the amount constantines name added upto, but it got changed over time. So who knows.

The reference to 666 is in the new testament…

so that no one can buy or sell who does not have the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: let anyone with understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a person. Its number is six hundred sixty-six.

          @jv:

I'd rather read it In Greek

But if you want to be pedantic, the New Testament was not written in Aramaic either, the old testament was.

Greek was the language of scholars at that time the new testament was written in Greek

        • @thelastnoob: I am making the call that 666 means ip v6, so Antichrist = Skynet.

88 also means HH which is what white power gangs in America like the aryan brotherhood or nazi lowriders tattoo. 8 represents the 8th letter of the alphabet which is H and and HH stands for 'heil Hitler'…

how are you saving money on this? it costs $88 and you get $88. you avoid the normal extra $5.95 purchase fee. it doesn't seem like something you want to go and broden

    • +2

      Cashrewards! Amex!

      • +3

Cashrewards? I thought it was in store only.

        • +2

Purchase egift on cashrewards, then use that to buy eftpos in store.

    • +3

it is very helpful for those pesky stores that charge a credit card surcharge

      you'll save 1.5% typically

      • +3

Or just use a debit card and choose savings?

        • +2

But this is saving of 5-50% depending how you got the original wish cards.

        • think more interest free, offset loan accounts, credit card rewards schemes

88 dollars on a savings card costs some $88 worth of money and rewards to some

        • @carlb: Depends. If your loan is less than 5% this instant saving of 5% for life1year is better than having the money sitting in offset.

        • +1

          @Turd: I don't understand your sentence,
I think you may be referring to using the same credit card to buy the wish cards for 5% off ?
then using that to achieve 5% off the eftpos card and still achieve any CC interest free and offset benefits and cc surcharge avoidance, which case the below interest free is added on top of the 5% saving not instead of

if using a credit card instead of savings you have $88 in the bank for the interest free term of your card upto 55 days or 6 months.
The $88 in bank earning interest or avoiding 3-5% home for upto 55 days or 6 months
you also earn credit card rewards if you have them.

on my interest free for 6 months i would only save on the rate 5% compounded on $88 = ~$2
on my interest free for 55 days i would only save on the rate 5% compounded on $88 = ~$0.23
but that is still better than $0 for using savings button

This also helps those looking to spend $2000 in one month (without incurring unnecessary CC Surcharges) on their shiny new credit cards to meet requirements to achieve bonus points or $500 cash back offers.

    • +2

      Good for money launderers :)

      • +2

That is the dark side of gift cards, the flip side is earning and getting lifehacks and reward points

  • +4

Just bought 20 cards, heaps at my local. No need for staff to confirm cards like at Coles. Saved heaps! And converted wish cards I got from Dan's, that pressie store and cashrewards.

    Saving 5 to 50%!

Cards expire in one year from date of activation

    • where you bought so I would not come to that Woolworths? Lol.

      • There is like 100 left or more.

Took me 19mins to do them after entering 20 wish cards of 50 each lol

        • 20 wish cards of $50 is only $1000 while 20 cards of $88 is $1760. Did you pay by other payments as well or u just bought 10 to 11 of $88 card?

        • +2

@nalumi5: The offer is on $88 cards, so I bought $88 cards. I had like 25 or so $50 cards to use up, which I got for between 5- 50% off

        • I understand buying $50 egiftcards for the Dan Murphy's discount but why would you buy $50 ones at 5% off. Seems more convenient to buy higher value ones.

        • +2

@bandana: Because it was a buy $50 card get back $10 from amex. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/2272/comments?page=1

Also the other one is Buy $50 and get a bonus $5 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/281774

          All on ozbargain.

          :) :)

        • @Turd: there was an offer for 50% one? Must have missed that :(

        • @hanofee: Yeah long time ago…. using various things lol.

    • +2

Lot of lucks for u in next year!

    • By my calculations if you have bought 20 @ $88 each. That would amount to 5280 Amex points. If you were local champion 7040 points. Nice work!

      • Nah didnt use AMEX. I used my wish cards which I bought for between 5-50% off. 25 or so of them. Was at checkout for 20mins.

Local champion only works after 2 or more transactions per day. Some places have heaps of trax already done so i dont bother.

    • -1

No need for staff to confirm cards like at Coles

Just to confirm - so you can activate these cards yourself at self-checkouts / no need assistance from staff?

      • Ummm… "No need for staff to confirm cards like at Coles"

Is there a better way to explain this?

        :)

    • I tried buying 6 and got stopped at 5 as that's the max limit. Fine, I'll just buy the 6th one separately. Did you encounter this, or just my particular Woolies?

      • Yeah $500 limit per transaction on gift cards

  • +1

    Sorry -0 Silly question -
Why do I need this if I already have a credit card or a debit card? How do I save?

    • Have you used cashrewards? They have wish cards for 5% less or buy from potm if you want 7% off.

Do your credit cards give you 5 to 50% off items?

  • +4

Better off getting two $44 cards.

    • +1
