No Fee (Save $5.95) on $88 EFTPOS Cards in Woolworths (In-Store Only)

1290

Was in Woolworths, Marden, today and saw the gift card stand decorated with banners that said no fees (save $5.95) on $88 eftpos cards. All I know is that it said that the card is accepted wherever eftpos is accepted.

Was too lazy to find out the expiry date…

Checked online and no sign of the deal or the card…so just an in-store thing…

Main attraction is the ability to consolidate your wish/dan murphy cards into these to extend expiry AND increase versatility (need to use self checkout machines)…thanks to "Turd"

This is part of Lunar New Year Deals for 2017

    • where are you located ??

      • Easteen suburbs Victoria ;)

    • +1

      $8800???!!!
Where are you going to use that much EFTPOS?

  • Just curoous

Are these cards available generally during the year or was it just released for chines Enel year. Ie the fee is waived just during now

    And do they expire?

    • $88 eftpos cards only available for CNY so special release $5.95 fee only waived till 11.59 pm 31/01/17 & the cards expire 1 year after you purchase them .

      • OK so if they're only avail Chinese new year. The fee being waived means its normally not waived?
I've never seen these cards before

        • +1

Eftpos cards are around all the time ,usually come in $50 or $100 but special design for this years CNY i can't recall ever seeing them before .Fee is normally $5.95 i think but occasionally you will get it waived for some special deal .I got $50 one recently coles i think & fee was waived but it could have been thru flybuys can't remember.

        • +1

@Triple J: I think that one from coles was the 2000 bonus point promo which effectively means you get a net profit of $4.05 in flybuys for buying a $50 eftpos card.

  • It appears these are restocked, stores that ran out few days ago suddenly have heaps

    • yes..some stores seems to restock it, my local woolies just dont display them anymore, but when i asked this morning, the lady very helpful and i bought 10 from her using egiftcard, no issues at all.. :-) im done for now got a total of 50!, used about 15 already… :-)

      • nice, using them to pay bills?

  • +1

I suppose the big risk is if you buy a lot and keep them for a while before using them all. If the company issuing them goes bust (ie dick smith) I think you will lose your money.

    • You suppose to finish it in a year and if they go bust like dick smith, woolworths may act to refund as they sell this to you.

      • +1

Woolworths will probably only offer a refund if Coles does first. That's what happened with the Dick Smith cards.

      • Yes you have to use them within 1 year expiry date. Although on the last day you can always go and use them to buy woolly or coles fift cards.
The problem is if the company goes bust. Suddenly the cards will be worth nothing.
Yes woolly could come to the rescue and offer to swap them for wish cards as a gesture of goodwill.

        • so in conclusion is the risk classified as big risk?

        • +1

          @LoveBargain15:
It depends who the issuer is. The bigger the issuer the smaller the risk.
Card Issuer: Blackhawk Network Australia, Suite 202, 6A Glenn St Milsons Point NSW 2061.
Not sure who is behind them.
The fact that Coles and Woolworths sell them reduces the risk.

        • @maxi: A simple Google search reveals that they are the largest 3rd party gift card provider in Australia. Good news to us bulk buyers ✅

        • @maxi: I think it is Indue. They also issue Only 1 Visa Card.

        • +3

@Neoika: they also are the mastermind behind Coles reloadable cards and their own Coles mastercard gift cards

  • Wanting to use it to pay a bill at the post office - can you use more than one of these cards in a transaction?.

I contacted my vendor and they said they/post office would charge a admin fee

    • I used 4 in one go with no problems. No fee etc. Though It would differ from store to store potentially.

10 down (used at post office) 35 or so left to go!

  • -2

Deal is good, but not fee..

Transaction Fee (incurred for each transaction that is billed by a merchant located in Australia)

    $0.10 per transaction

Inactivity Fee (incurred each month when your balance falls below $5.00 and you don't make a transaction for sixty (60) consecutive days).

    $0.50 per month

  • Woolies Kwinana 6167 had the $88… offer written on the giftcard stand, but looked thoroughly and no eftpos cards were available.
I guess that may be common?

  • All gone in Eastern suburbs of Melbourne :(. Was going to buy 10 more.

    • +1

how many in total you got ?? i've just got 1 more today to make it to 51 = $4488 :-)

      • Big investment…
It takes money to save/make money ;-)

  • +1

It would be good to find a way to extract the cash back from the cards without paying fees.
It is not always convenient to physically go to the Post office to pay bills. And in $88 increments… Especially when you have a line of people waiting behind you…
No good to use it at the supermarket because you may as well use the 5% discounted gift cards that are always available in unlimited supply.

    • Fee free churning is rare because every EFTPOS transaction costs 5 cents to 30 cents depending on merchants' negotiated fee schedule with banks.

It is possible but most people would not go to that extent.

For instance, you can overpay your ATO account with all those gift cards and ask for a refund.
Raising a red flag and putting yourself on ATO radar over those amex points may not worth it.

ATO: Please explain why you were overpaying your tax account with multiple $88 payments.
You: For good luck in the year of Fiery Rooster!
ATO: Wish granted! Your advance tax payment for your good fortunes in the year ahead is appreciated!

Another way is to deposit them fee free into your bookmakers, wait for arbitrage betting opportunities, meet turnover requirement and cash out.

      • But even if you put them through bookmakers, which of them actually allow you to go into a physical branch to deposit?

        TAB?

        • TAB would happily take your money.

If you have a winning strategy or algorithm, bookmakers would close your account and return the balance anyway. Bookmakers are only looking to attract square punters (those who bet more than they win on a daily basis).

"After recently reviewing your account a commercial decision has been made to close your account due to the unsustainable nature of your business.

To claim the remaining balance in your account you can either:

          · Request a cheque

          · Receive a Direct Credit"

          Or something like this:

"Since the creation of your account, over 28,000 individual bets have been placed using your Luxbet account.

The extremely high volume of bets is placing a strain on the website www.luxbet.com.

In accordance with the Luxbet Terms and Conditions, your use of Luxbet’s website is subject to a condition of reasonable use.

Wagering in such high volumes through www.luxbet.com is likely to cause damage to the website including (without limitation) by slowing down the operation of the website foe other users.

For the reasons set out above, Luxbet has decided to:
Suspend your Luxbet account effective immediately pending your outstanding bets being finalized; and
Upon all outstanding wagers being finalised, close your betting account.

Luxbet will honour any existing wagers made through your Luxbet Account and upon all outstanding wagers being settled, Luxbet will promptly forward you the balance of your Luxbet Account."

      • You can load them into some Visa pre paid cards, just be careful with the frequency you do it and how you withdraw etc as you will be flagged. I had my card locked a while back for an investigation into my alleged "Money Laundering/card fraud" lol. Took about 4 months to finalize and to regain access (with a stern warning about how I was using it lol)

    • ise the self-serve bill payment machine at auspost an option? i've never used one myself.

      • +2

yes, just used that last saturday..

  • does westpac accept eftpos for credit card bill payments?

      no

  • PLEASE NOTE: Although these are advertised as EFTPOS cards, we have found they cannot be used everywhere. We have had 100% fail rate on any EFTPOS terminal made by VERIFONE and even KFC doesn't work. These terminals give an error "Invalid Date". The cards do work elsewhere so is limited to some retailers and / or terminals. To give an idea, we get a 50% failure rate (that is half the retailers / restaurants/ cafes etc don't work).

    • Worked at chemist warehouse

      Verifone is auspost? Ahhh?!

    • Worked at Costco, worked at Woolworths, worked at Sushi hub.

May be they all use CBA machine which I have no idea what is a "Vodafail" terminal.

Can you please show a picture of that terminal?

        • But some ozbargainer report self serve in Aus post work with this card.

        • @LoveBargain15: Do not do it!

Memo today - "do not accept gift cards as a payment form for bills, period."

Pretty dumb imo. This is crazy middle management not letting people save money to survive in Australia. Those big dumbos

        • @Turd:
This is a real shame, so there is no self service @ Australia post?

        • @Turd:

          What is your source?

          Is it nationwide?

        • @Herbert: The "Internet" forums. The SYSTEM will allow it no problems, however the human may prevent you due to the memo.

This is just like the XS cards all over again

        • @Turd:

          Tanks for your prompt response.

I think that's reasonable store policy.

The auspost pos software still has a DOS-ish interface. I assume split EFTPOS payments would require more effort, processing time and increased EFTPOS transaction fees.

    • It appears to only affect older non-NFC (tap & pay) terminals. I'll try get a photo or at least the model number.

Anyone else had issues using the cards anywhere?

  • Hi guys, I have a silly question. Has the card already been loaded with the $88 value in it when you purchased it or you have to load it up yourself? I have paid for it myself from a self-check out machine and went home and realized the receipt didn't show any details of the eftpos card eg. the balance of the card is now $88. Thank you

    • +1

      They are loaded instore.

Did you not take the loading slip that comes after it prints the actual woolies receipt?

      • Oh no, I didn't see any. I have collected my Woolies receipt but nothing comes out after. When I reached home and I was wondering how did the eftpos card get loaded. So there should be another receipt printed out after the actual receipt? As in, two separate receipts?

        • check the balance online, if it's 0, gob ack to the woolies with your receipt..

        • @annielee: I didn't dare to scratch the silver sticker in case it hasn't been loaded and need to return back to the store to proof that it hasn't been used. I'm afraid once I scratch it, it will be deem used/invalid for return.

        • +3

@sharethelove: Fortunately, when you logon to https://giftcards.indue.com.au/theperfectgiftcard/, the loading of giftcard, and purchases are distinguised. So you should be fine to scratch the pin panel to reveal pin and check online.

The info header provides how much is loaded:

          Loads to date: $88.00

Below it, the redemption table provides each transaction, and will have an initial one corresponding to the load, with the Description of "Refund - Store Address" and Amount of $88.

So, there is no way they can say you have bought stuff, because spending will have Description such as "Purchase - COLES 0553" instead.

If you feel uncomfortable, go to the service counter, with the purchase receipt, explain your uneasiness not having gotten the activation slip, show them the unscratched card, and say you are now scratching it (don't show the pin of course :-)), then visit the balance site from your mobile phone. If all ok, then fine.Otherwise, you have proven that the load has not been successful. And claim your refund.

Most likely, it is fine anyway. Hope this helps.

        • +1

@bluesky: Thank you, I will give it a try and check online :)

        • +1

@bluesky: I have just checked. It's loaded automatically after purchased. Thank you!

        • +1

          @sharethelove: Good stuff :-)

  • God dammit I saw this and didn't know what I could use it for. If I had known would have been able to pay off a big bill and rack some points in the process. Arrghh!

    • The promotion hasn't ended yet. You can still go out and buy some.

      • -2

Yeah but it stopped working on Eftpos machines at Auspost so really no point unless you can pay your bills online with it.

        • "stopped working"
          got proof of that?

        • I just used 10, with 6 used today at an Aust post outlet. it better not stop I have 35 more to go lol.

        • @Brisxr6t:

Please let us know which Aust post outlet you are referring to?

      • Haha - you would really need good luck to find any now. Most stores told me one person bought all of them on the 25th.

        • There was still about 500 left in 3 stores yesterday in my area country Victoria probably just sold out in city stores .I bought another 10 with the last of my wish cards .

        • @Triple J: Dang!

  • i know its not possible to wothdraw from it like a debit card as a cash withdrawal,

but do people have the best way/suggestion on how to get cash out or as close as possible??

the only suggestion I have is some credit cards accept these debit cards as payment towards paying it off

however there may be a fee!

    • yes, i paid one of my CC bill, and $2 fees being slapped for each transaction, i guess… i only tried with 1x$88 eftpos.

      • amex yeah> at post office yeah? Self serve yea? $88 with $2 fee is pretty high fee%

        • +2

Yes some bills paid in person at the post office attract a $2 fee as well. Electricity bill with Origin for example.
And my post office will accept only 1 card per payment, so if the card is not enough the balance has to be cash.
You can make multiple $88 cards payments of course but each one attracts the $2 fee.
Aldi is the same and will accept only 1 card per payment, so if the card is not enough the balance has to be cash.

        • @maxi: For Aldi, I suppose you can easily break into separate transactions.

        • @sylvester328:
Yes but not if the one item you are buying is over $88 (tv, dishwasher, etc).

        • How do you pay an AMEX bill at the self serve? Its never worked for me, always had to go to the counter.

  • I brought 9 today…..still a couple left at Central woolie near UTS library

  • There are at least 2 round-about ways to get cash out of the card (but not directly out of the card):

    1. (against the bank terms and condition) get a mate of yours who has a POS machine to "charge" you. He needs to pay the bank say 30c for each transaction. He will then pay/transfer the funds to you (probably minus bank charges). I know that overseas, there are some shops that use their POS machine to "lend" money, so similar concept here.

    2. (unknown if it is against the terms n conditions) ***** is another way that I know works (already tested on the $88 card).
However, ppl look at me funny when I do it (these are the staff members assisting me with the transaction - which implies that it is unknown whether you are actually allowed to do it).

      1. open a betting account, deposit then withdraw into another bank account? Tho it will most likely raise flags for money laundering?
      • Correct. Not worth the trouble.

        Just pay bills with them

        • What about purchasing a high priced item at like David Jones, then taking it back saying it wasn't what you wanted?

They would have to put the money back into your bank account.

        • @treeman: Not sure about the policy, but generally they must refund the money back to the eftpos cards that were used. If you use 10 $88 cards it is a time consuming process. They "may" at their disgression just give you a David Jones Gift Card.

I know Myers gives returns gift cards if you return items OR refund back to the cards you use.

Thus never "back to your bank account", they wouldnt ask.. "Ohh can I get your DD details, I can bank deposit to u, we are with CBA it will be instant".

        • @treeman: This is theoretically possible at any major chain with a reasonable refund policy as the transactions are normally recorded as a "debit card" transaction.

I once purchased something from Masters using wish giftcard (can't remember if it was egiftcard or physical) and got a refund back on my bank account as the staff couldn't be bothered and process it that way because the receipt just said "card".

      1. I doubt any merchants would do it in large quantities because ATO cross check EFTPOS settlement data against industry benchmark to estimate turnover for tax purpose. Merchants who process these cashing out transactions is a violation of banks' POS terms and conditions and run the risk of having their POS cancelled.

      2. That's true. I know what you are talking about, especially in multiple lots. Naughty naughty!

      • What's this ***** stand for??

        • +1

sorry, that's trade secret, if we tell you we'll have to kill you 🤐
