It doesn't look too bad for a beginner tripod. I would stick to relatively light DSLRs and lenses though, the head doesn't look too sturdy.

      • How do you know what's a suitable tripod? The more weight the better? Got an A6000, and have a cheap tripod now but I wouldn't trust it too much.

I have an A6000 too and am about to pull the trigger on a better tripod. My crappy vivitar one has scared me for the last time. With the 20% ebay sale (COMMIT20) I have found the Manfrotto BeFree one for $168 which has very good reviews.

How much do you want to spend? I spent about $300 on my main tripod and another $100 on the ball head.
I had a $150 dollar tripod prior to that and it was good, small and light weight but when it came down to it wind will send vibrations through it. It depends totally on what your use is going to be though. If you want portability and plan on hiking with it your needs will differ greatly from someone who is going to be driving to locations with only small walks. The fewer the number of leg segments the better as each segment is going to allow for a little bit extra wobble.

My suggestion would be to figure out how much you want to spend total and then spend 25% of that on a ball head that has the features you want and 75% on the tripod.

I have a manfrotto and love it, its super stable. The A6000 should be pretty light so may not need to spend as much as what I did.

        • @02keilj: ah ok awesome thanks for the tips. I think I'd prioritise portability over the minor wobbles.

Although that said I feel like my cheap one is fine for longer exposure times for landscapes when I'm at the camera. But really don't trust to leave it when take photos from further away.

Looking at the manfrotto ranges and the BeFree looks good, also a compact version which is under $100 and closer to what I'd pike to spend.

          Thanks again for the tips!

If I was looking for a ball head for video I'd grab one. They're on Ebay for about $70 if you miss out here.

  • There are several sellers on ebay with these under a different brand. I think Australian stock was $59.95 last week.

Edit: Yep exactly the same. Just checked the seller and he has the other versions the ebay sellers have as well. Amazon do the other brand name to. Just can't remember the name.
