The Mi Max is an excellent phone… AU$221 is a steal.

    • +4

Agreed! I'm giving the Mi5 some serious thought. Also on the hunt for a cheapy for the mother in-law, some serious considerations here.

      • +1

I have a Mi5 and for $277 it is an amazing deal. Since I wasn't a fan of MIUI (or all of the bloatware that comes with their ROMS), I got my bootloader unlocked and put CyanogenMod 14.1 on there. Runs like a dream with amazing battery life. Only downside of a custom rom is a lack of android pay, but I found that every second MIUI update broke android pay anyway.

    • +3

      Do your own one?

Just wondering everyone on here talks up xiaomi phones although the two I have bought have been nothing but a nightmare.

And even worse is the last I bought on the 11/11 aliexpress sale, seller avoided my messages and told me that they had refunded me to use that money to fix the phone, I ordered temper glass which arrived damaged and that's what the refund was for.

      • I have a Redmi Note 4 and its been good so far- with latest update seems pretty solid phone and for the price…

        • +3

I bought a Mi Max 64GB for my friend, when ebay 10% off. It was under $300 and delivered in 3 days with DHL. Great phone.

I am going to buy one myself.

        • I've had the note 3 prime I think and now the Kate, on official and cm both have been an absolute pos.

Even worse I doubt I'll get a refund, aliexpress usually side with sellers rather than buyers.

Are you on China ROM or global?

        • +4

@bti_jet: I bought RN3 with global ROM and band 28 and apart from me being a total (profanity) and dropping and smashing the screen, it's been an absolute dream. Battery life went backwards with the MIUI 8 update but it went back up again with 8.1.1

        • @adrianhughes1998:

How long have you had the phone for? I'm also on 8.1.1, mine keeps freezing and rebooting, yesterday it was bricked in bootloop. I'm not even using that phone anymore, 1 week and its good for the bin.

I requested to unlock boot loader officially so I can put cm, hopefully I get the approval.

        • +1

@bti_jet: had it since early September. Man that's no good I have heard though that folks that went to 8.0.5 stable then to 8.1.1 got (profanity) by it. Insane cos 8.0.5 got pulled and replaced by 8.1.1 twonl days later.

I got unlocked approval in about three business days very fast so fingers crossed for you there.

        • +1

          @adrianhughes1998:

Maybe that's what happened, I was on earlier ROM was working fine, then upgraded to 8.1 nothing but headaches, once phone goes into bootloop it doesn't stop till battery dies.

Don't know if firmware caused it, didn't use the phone for long. Although my first xiaomi note 3 started playing up after a week also and I didn't Start flashing new ROMs on it to fix the problems.

I put in a request yesterday so hopefully gets approved soon and I'll put cm on it.

What was your excuse for unlock?

        • @bti_jet:Jesus that's terrible. Maybe their quality control is shit but everything Xiaomi I've had has had no issues. Hopefully is sorted for you then.

I was thinking about flashing cm too did it on my LG g pad before

        • +2

          @adrianhughes1998:

I've got power boards and mi band both have been excellent, with their phones I've tried twice and both have been a nightmare

        • @bti_jet:bloodies :(. Fingers crossed for you mate

        • +1

          @adrianhughes1998:

Thanks mate, my last hope is cm flash if xiaomi approve unlock officially if not I will do unofficial and hopefully with flash everything works as it should

      • +1

The official store is terrible. I bought a phone on 14/12, they marked it as shipped on the 15th but the DHL (yeah, paid extra to get it before xmas) tracking number says otherwise. Has been on 'shipping information received' since the 15th. Been messaging them daily since the 17th, only just got a boilerplate response this morning saying the holidays are busy and shipping is slower blah blah. Completely missed the point it hasn't actually shipped. Can't wait until I can file a dispute and get my cash back.

        • +2

Good luck with that, if you bought on aliexpress they side with seller. Never again will I buy anything over couple $$$ on aliexpress, I've been burnt twice.

The sellers on there are the worst also, they know Ali express sides with them, there nice till you buy once they have payment they don't care anymore.

        • I bought on 15 December and mine arrived in Australia on 22 December. Just have to wait for customs clearance which can take time. Didn't pay extra for express shipping. Store was Fantacy.

        • +1

@bti_jet: What type of claims have you filed? I haven't disputed anything over $50 USD, but I've won every dispute.

        • @midastouch:

I bought a Nike bag $30US filed dispute, uploaded 6 photos to show it was fake as I had an original that they must of copied design from, they said the seller is authorized Nike seller and that all the photos I uploaded were invalid. Another was for a $$16 Vape mod arrived DOA, aliexpress sided with seller on that as well, can't remember what they said that time as it was long time ago.

I remember that made me stop buying on aliexpress, then someone commented recently on ozbargain saying "aliexpress has buyer protection and that its much better these days".

I read through quickly on aliexpress about buyer protection, there's a quote that says " if an item is fake you will receive full refund without sending the item back".The bag on the photo looked good but I was suspicious of it being original because they said its 2016 model new, but I had bought that bag in 2011, I asked seller if bag is genuine, he told me yes. I thought I'll buy it if its fake I'll get my money back, nope didn't happen. Seller tried to get me to send the bag back with $0 refund, I escalated disputed aliexpress offered the same deal so I cancelled dispute and threw bag out.

Long story short, aliexpress buyers protection stinks, you should factor this into account when spending abit of money.

The only reason I got fooled again into buying the note 3 is all the hype on here.

There's quite a few horror stories on trustpilot regarding aliexpress and them siding with seller rather than buyer also, I'm wondering when aliexpress will be band. I guess not enough ozbargainers have complained, I know I've had enough of them and will steer clear just like neverbuying

        • +1
        • +2

My experience with Ali Express is similarly terrible. It's fine so long as there are no problems, but if you do have problems you're basically out of luck.

I have a Redmi Note 3 Pro Special Edition blah blah (Kate model) and I quite like it. MIUI is a bit meh but the hardware is good for the price. However, the reason I don't have an Mi5s is because I'm not willing to buy another expensive piece of hardware from Ali Express. It's just too much of a gamble, in my opinion.

        • +2

@bti_jet: I'm sorry to hear that. For future reference, the majority of name brand clothes/fashion goods will be fake. I just stay away from them as they're not worth the hassle.

I frequent AliExpress quite a lot and have dealt with 30+ disputed items, each which I have won. 95% were settled once AliExpress stepped in.

Take it for what it is. It's a great place to get cheap goods with free shipping. If it works for you then you'll love it, vice versa.

        • +1

          @2be8:

Exactly, I buzz out how anyone can spend more than $200 on a xiaomi phone, way too much of a gamble when things turn south

        • +1

          @midastouch:

True, I know how there system works so won't be gambling with anything over $10 going from my experience.

        • +5

          @bti_jet:
F@c# AliExpress, just fu@# them. Absolutely NEVER buying anything from them EVER again after consecutively having numerous disputes found 100℅ in seller's favour for faulty items (mainly electronic parts like LCD screens etc) even though videos and pictures were loaded with appropriate explanations. I'd love to shove the pile of these faulty goods right up their greedy, stingy ar$e$. F@#! them. Sorry guys, I'm really cut with them.

eBay might be dearer but PayPal wins hands down everytime when it comes to dispute resolutions. Never buy electronics and anything expensive from AliExpress as their protection is phoney/non-existent and it is up to their greedy discretion with no recourse available.

For those going ahead with purchasing on AliExpress, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! YOU HAVE NO WARRANTY. Take it from me who's a veteran of AliExpress from the days OzBargain hardly knew what AliExpress was…

        • +1

          @spy:

I know how you feel, Ebay's dispute system is on a different level compared to aliexpress.

Only bargains I'll be buying from them is cheap stuff $1-3, that way if something's wrong, I won't care coz it's only couple of bucks.

Just hope some ozbargainners are aware of the warranty from this place, so many posts on Xiaomi mi5 for $400-500+.

I just laugh to myself and think which idiot actually buys that phone especially from aliexpress. If any problems come up and the phone is useless, you wasted heaps of money on a new phone without any real warranty

        • @bti_jet: precisely.

Remember, finding in seller's favour does not serve their commercial interests as they take a cut of every successful transaction. They will find in the seller's favour in their initial transactions to secure their custom. Once they have the seller hooked, they will start screwing you around knowing the seller's going nowhere, which is my precise experience. No f%@#ing more.

        • +1

@squeeb: How much customs tax did you pay? I saw this disclaimer on the product description:

          3. Who will pay for customs duty?
It is buyer who should pay customs duty.

        • +2

          @lovepeoplenotmoney:
          Only charged if over $1,000.

      • I have a redmi note 3 (Qualcomm version) and it has been absolutely amazing in almost every respect - I went from a nexus 4 which was an absolute pile of….

The rn3 has been completely stable, fast and has great battery life. I also love miui

My only two complaints is that the camera is crap and that it's not a very strong phone. It's come out of my pocket on to concrete a few times and put annoying dings in the side - I should really get a case before I break it.

(Had it for about 3 months)

      • +1

Had my own share of nightmares with Zopos over the years. All whilst the Mrs Xperia z never missed a beat. Never again Chinese branded phones, the BS just ain't worth saving a few bucks. Just got a Sony XA ultra on the current deal for 299 to replace yet another broken china offering

      • I got a Note 3 for my daughter about 6 months ago and it was too big and she dropped it a couple of times, damaging the screen even with screen protector on.

It was a pretty good phone, but had these issues

        • sim card tray got stuck and bent when inserting a nano sim with the frame to make it the next size up - user error, didn't make sure the sim card and the frame were absolutely flush.
        • microphone doesn't work anymore, but it could be due to it being dropped a couple of times. She can get the microphone on the earphones to work though.
        • the Global MUI came with heaps of apps I had never heard of before, and some were chat programs I didn't know she was using - my fault!

The battery life on the Note 3 was amazing, I replaced her phone with a Moto G4 Plus for Christmas and the battery just drains away so quickly in comparison.

    • Which is its exact model number? I need to check if it will work in some countries.

  • Any Mi Max 64GB 3GB ?
How is the delivery time ?

    • It's just the 32GB/3GB on sale.

      • 64GB version is Octa Core (Snapdragon 652) where 16GB and 32GB version is hexa core (Snapdragon 650)

        • No only 128gb 4gb model has snapdragon 652.

        • @adrianhughes1998:

which one is the best to choose 32/3 or 64/4 or 128/4 with snapdragon 652, could you pls let me know for the link to get the cheapest price, thanks and merry Christmas.

        • +2

@tinkko: marginal increase in performance for 652 not worth the price bump cos cheaper to get a 128gb microsd card.

There is a table in the following listing compares different version of the Mi Max
          http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-6-44-Xiaomi-Mi-Max-Snapdrag…

          64GB is 652

        • @adrianhughes1998:

but how about 4gb, does it make any difference from 3bg model, I'm seriously thinking to buy one, thanks for your help, cheers

        • +4

          @tinkko:

Mainly, more RAM allows more apps to be run concurrently without swapping.

I will get the 64GB/3GB version. When ebay on 10 to 15% special, it can drop to around $270. 128Gb version is around $370.

          Off topic:

Since everyone is opening their wallets now, ebay has no reason to run any specials to give money to us. But when the holiday is over and all of us are preparing to tighten our belts, ebay specials will popup to squeeze the last drop of our saving.

        • @fatice: yep buying from eBay/PayPal is the wise choice if you want protection and warranty. Wait for the %age drop and then pounce.

    • +1

Delivery time is too long. Might as well wait for ebay special. It delivers within 1 to 2 weeks. Mine was 3 days via DHL from HK.

  • Why is it in Russian?

    • Same how do I change it?

        • Reverts back to russian, after clicking to each phone page.

        • @mudkipz: There's a link at the top right of the Russian page to "go to global site", click that then click the link in the reply above.

        • Eh? Tried what you said (and variations thereof) and still opens each phone in Russian. Can you explain this more clearly, please.

      • The individual links in OP should now all be English. However clicking "Go to Deal" and browsing the links from that page will result in Russian. This is due to the sellers ad linking to the Russian locale.

This is a fantastic deal especially on the Mi Max..I am loving the Redmi Note 4 I picked up recently. With the latest Miui update the battery life seems to have improved!

    • +1

Ka Ching. I can vouch for this too with the latest 8.1.1 update theyvr fixed it now.

    • +1

It feels like the battery life has doubled. Not sure how they did it.

    • +1

does the note 2 support 4G in both sim slots ….. telstra has turned off 2G and in looking for a new phone with 2 sims but only seem to 2 G on one of the sim slots which is useless as optus is rusting off 2 G in january 2017

      • I've looked for such a phone for the same reason. I've not found one yet. 🙁

        • +1

Motorola G4 plus does 4G both SIM slots, got one for my son for Christmas, to replace his Note2, cost $330 and has band 28, BUT I'd like a Xiaomi that has 2 3G/4G sims and large screen as I also want 2 SIMS now.

      • I have the note 2 and its 4G/2g only.

  • Can somebody please confirm that the Xiaomi Mi Max actually comes with a 4850mAh juicer?

    • Yeah I think it does. I just ordered mine from GearBest and paid 255 so half kicking myself here.

      • I've got my sights on the Mi Mix but can't bring myself to become an early adopter. Or maybe the price is too steep.

        • It looks a ripper but price is a bit high at moment. Mi notebook air on the other hand looks very tempting

        • Way too high. Mi Max came down fast in price, so I'd wait for the Mi Mix to drop. Looks like a lovely phone but at that price? Seems too high for me.

  • Yes it does come with 4850 smoothie maker.. 😃

  • Which of these budget phones has the best camera? :)

    • None cos they are pretty mediocre for the price. If that's what you're looking for then you'd be better served by another brand or higher up the price chain.

    • +3

the 277 buck Mi 5 camera is only slightly worse than the well regarded OnePlus 3. It has OIS too

  • My work owes me $300 worth of phone as they dropped mine in water (Just needs to be better than a Moto G 2nd gen, and not bigger)… does anyone know if any of these phones are good for travel overseas?

    • +2

All would be fine for travelling.

    • +2

gtab the 277 buck mi 5

  • Which's the cheapest with NFC?Thanks!

    • +2

The note 4 and the mi max do not have NFC..the Mi5s plus has NFC ..

    • Genuine question, what do you really use NFC for ?

      • +7

        Paying for stuff. Genuine answer

        • +1

About the only thing I have ever used NFC for on my Zenfone 2

      • +1

The only use I can think of for NFC, for my purposes- not really interested in contactless payments from a phone- is use of a Yubikey One Time Password generator on a phone.

        https://www.yubico.com/products/yubikey-hardware/yubikey-neo…

      • Android pay (it's awesome now), also useful to quickly share contacts, websites

    • +2

In case you're going to use it for Android Pay… Xiaomi phones don't work that well.

  • +2

    http://www.joybuy.com/1222200.html
Joybuy has Mi5s plus 4G+64G gold for USD$311.99, don't forget use coupon

    • Which coupon? :O

      • $5 for new user, also you can play games to get up to $30 which I tried 3 days and no lucky.

  • The mi mix looks amazing. I want it so bad but almost $1000????

    • It's also only a 1080p screen..

      • +4

Which for me (and should be for most people) is a positive.

1080p is more than enough and any more pixels (eg qhd) is just using more battery and sapping more performance (due to the CPU having to work harder)

Unless you have a magnifying glass or you want bragging rights, I just can't see why anything more than 1080p is "better"

To each his own I suppose.

        • Vr benefits from higher res but Ur right

        • Yeah, I have 1440P om my phone, 5-1/2" screen, doesn't look much better than 1080p unless you use it in VR goggles …. which is rare.
For day to day, 1080p is fine even on 5-1/2" phones.

  • +5

I have a MiMax and love it. It's actually my favourite Android phone and MIUI has been great. I bought it in Singapore so it's got global rom, and dual sim is useful. Big screen is good for games and movies. Only downside is probably the limited support for file systems on the SD card leaving me to use it as a dual sim phone instead. Oh, and it's big enough to cause issues in some jeans and to use one handed (Pokemon Go is really hard for example).

  • +1

It's a great phone. Got the 256 version a few days ago from vickmall… Use one for a while and you can't go back to a screen with huge bezels.

  • interested in the mi5s, but not sure why they come in so many variants…. some have 3gb, some 4gb, anyone able to clear it up for me? these are genuine xiaomis right?

    • These are all genuine. Lot of phone manufacturers are going down the 3gb / 32gb 4gb/64gb route now

  • Damn just bought the 193 one for 233 a few days ago

    Should have waited

    • Same here. Still damn good @ 233

      • yep! considering I bought 3 of them!!!

  • Do they come preinstalled with Play Store?

Or do I gotta do that myself when I get it?

    • +2
      1. Does it have Google Play and Multi-language?

Yes. Multi-language ROM and google play will be installed to your cellphone. Kindly remind that incomplete translation cannot be avoided no matter official or unoffical ROM.

    • The one I bought for my friend came with play store and multilanagues. But only has one locale setting: China. That does not affect anything.

  • Is it Chinese time? That means it'll start at 3am in Melbourne on 27 Dec 2016.

    • +13

most likely not chinese time. Probably USA time.

Chinese people don't use Aliexpress, they use Taobao.

      Aliexpress is for the Gweilo's.
