Is there some benefit here? Seems like a joke, right? $395? What…?

  • -8

100,000 points is a set of headphones. Please, am I missing something here?

    • +11

It's 96,000 points for one way to Los Angeles from Melbourne in Business Class. Maybe do some research on the value of points. You'd be an idiot to use them for online shopping.

      • -4

Really? That seems more like it. Never really followed points, just jumped on a plane and flew. Seems like there's a better way. Cheers.

There's heaps of Frequent Flyer/Point Hacks blogs that'll give you heaps of information on the best use of them. If you continuously sign up to and then cancel once you have the points you can earn hundreds of thousands.
My mate's flying him and his missus to Paris first class with Singapore Airlines in a few months, all from signing up to credit cards.

Good luck in trying to find this mythical business class seat to LAX from MEL! Having said that I find Business and First availability on Etihad so much easier than on Qantas. Qantas domesti business is easy to find, but International- different story-

    • QC35 is 73K points and costs $499 to buy at JB Hifi.

NB: this is not to say that buying consumer electronics with rewards points is particularly good value.

    • Or approx $500 in gift cards to use on whatever you like.

    • Its $1000 on the classifieds
      not to shabby

  • It's only 2 passes and you need to spend on qantas products

  • Its no longer 1.5 Krisflyer/Asia Miles per dollar spent. It is now 1.2 Krisflyer/Asia Miles per dollar spent.

    • Updated. Cheers

American Express Qantas Ultimate card currently gets you up to 112,500 points for $450. The annual fee is slightly higher, but it also comes with an annual Qantas return domestic flight (which you could sell to offset the annual fee) plus has lower spend requirement ($1500 / 3 months) and income requirement ($65,000 household income annually): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/275964

    • How do you request the Qantas return domestic flight voucher so you can sell?

      • It's not a voucher, you need to call Amex to make the booking.

Amex Explorer is also another likely better option unless you really need Qantas points - for the same annual fee you get a $400 Amex travel credit, and similar or better points earn per $1.

    • Yes, the Explorer is my top pick of the bunch, but AMEX Ultimate likely to be the best current offer for diehard Qantas point collectors.

    • Disagree in terms of upfront benefit, the 2x Qantas passes easily sell for $50+ each on ebay, and the 100k points easily surpasses $400 worth, even in gift card form. But yes, really no point in holding this for more than a year considering there are much better cards out there in terms of benefit vs annual fee.

      • The Explorer also comes with 100k Amex MR Gateway points, plus an extra 10k points if you sign up through a referral link. This is the equivalent of 75k or 82.5k Velocity (or other airline) points.

  • Starwood Preferred Guest Gold status can be useful if you have SPG points.

If you are member of professional organisation e.g. Engineers Australia or Professional Australia, you can get American express card with following benefits ( through them):
    1. Reduced annual fee of $ 300 each year instead of $395 for Platinum Reverse card
    2. No annual fee for 1st year.
    3. One complementary return Virgin flight or one night in Hotel each year.
    4. Priority Pass Membership with 2 complementary visit each year.
    5. Free enrolment to American Express rewards program.

So you can either get bonus free points ist year and higher fee later on or no bonus points but lower fee for life.

only flip side with Amex card is that you have to keep another rewards card like visa or master as Amex is not accepted at many places to earn the rewards.

  • Unless I am reading the T&C's incorrectly, if you get the Altitude card, the 2 lounge passes are for 1) Amex lounge in Sydney; and 2) Priority Pass Lounges worldwide
So this doesn't restrict you to Qantas lounges.

Priority Pass Membership to Airport lounges

If you choose Altitude Rewards you can register your Altitude Black American Express card to receive two complimentary passes per year to use at over 700 VIP airport lounges worldwide.

When travelling internationally, it’s a welcome relief to escape crowded terminals should flight delays or cancellations strike.

With your Altitude Black American Express card®, each year you’ll receive two complimentary lounge passes with your complimentary Priority Pass membership after you first register, to use at your choice of over 700 VIP airport lounges in over 400 cities in 120 countries, regardless of the class of travel or airline you’re flying.

If you're travelling with a companion, they can join you in the lounge for US$27, which will be charged directly to your Altitude Black American Express Card.

    5k spend in 90days..WTF!!!

    • ~1700 a month is really not that much

      • +1

I struggled to spend $1500 within 2 months for the AMEX explorer deal.

$5000 would seem a struggle for a frugal single or couple without kids IMHO.

        • +1

I wish I had that problem!

        • @djkelly69:

Do you mean the no kids part? Haha

        • @Hogg: Hahaha, not quite, just the struggle spending $1500 in 2 months part!

        • @djkelly69:

It helps when you don't have money to spend. :(

      5k spend in 90days

If you have a family and have private health insurance, ring your health insurance company and tell them you'd like to pre-pay a year's insurance. Not only will that get you more than half-way to the $5000 goal, you'll also be saving money as health insurance fees increase in April every year. You'll effectively be paying this year's rates from April-December next year, when everyone else will be paying higher rates.

    • Pay the bills, not spend money on general expenses as such.

  • By my calcs, 100000 altitude points = 40000 krisflyer points.

  • I had the black card and cancelled in April, am i still eligible for the bonus?

    • It usually needs to be 12 months in between.

  • Why do this, when you can do this? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256382

Altitude Black for 50k qantas points only, but 0 annual fee for first year. :) Depends how much you value the additional 50k points, but I guess I'll stick with the 0 annual fee for first year option.

  • All good :)

    • Nice, Point Hacks is saying it expires today. Another thing I can procrastinate on :)
