  • You're dammed fast forumninja, nice work as usual.

    • seems like the offer are released at 3am

      • +2

Looks like these amex deals are really taking off

  • -2

Was hitting myself earlier thinking I missed out $150 because I did not see this when purchasing tickets last week to travel next week. Glad to know this offer has just released.

Not sure if anyhow can change tickets and make use of this offer?

    • So this one is the most generous one yet.

      • But has the highest threshold so rules more out.

  • +27

No time to travel, too many amex deals to keep up with

  • +1

Anyone know if these really are for 'flights only' or if it works for other things like Qantas cruises (or gift cards to spend on cruises)?

The t&c don't seem to pan out the way they say most of the time but not sure I want the risk.

    • Pretty much only flights. Other services are booked through other merchants/processors so wouldn't trigger the refund.

      • Not true. Works on gift cards as someone else has stated..

        • Question then is - can you use the gift cards for Qantas cruises, hotels etc?!

        • +1

          @Hoju: No, only flights.

        • -1

          @vetopower:

Wrong, you can use the voucher to book hotels, I did

        • @divious:

Ooh gonna check if it works for cruises

        • +1

@divious: You must be thinking of some other voucher. The ones bought from http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/gift-vouchers/globa… can only be used for flights. They generate a flight reference number. The redemption page takes you straight to a flight booking page. I've redeemed them hundreds of times.

        • @Hoju: Expect to be disappointed. divious is (unfortunately) wrong.

        • @vetopower:

Ok I may be wrong, but I bought a voucher before and they sent me the voucher like this: ZJF6JHN39V72XSDF which can be redeemed for flights and hotels (I booked a hotel in Hawaii and it worked well), but it's better to confirm with them the information.

        • @divious: That's a hotel voucher, which you typically receive when you book a flight, rather than a gift card that you buy at http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/gift-vouchers/globa…

        • @vetopower:

it's very strange, why they sent me a hotel voucher. I used the voucher to book the hotels, so that's why I did not know that the voucher can only be redeemed for the flights. If I used the voucher to book a flight, then I can tell a different story. Thanks for the heads up anyway.

        • Yeah, gift cards that get the refund are for flights hence the "pretty much." Same service, just mechanism is different (which can mean differences in charges/points, but is still the same service).

  • +3

Gift cards work, due to privacy laws companies must not provide detailed itemised information of what people purchased.

    • Haven't bought flights in a while. If flight costs were $744 and we paid $700 with gift cards, would the balance be subject to credit card fees?

      • +1

No. There are no credit card fees to buy a gift card or to pay the amount for a flight not covered by a gift card.

        • +1

          Great. Thank you

        • +1

I'm looking to redeem Qantas reward flights flying with Emirates (via Qantas website), and the taxes & fees are about $2K. Without a gift card the 1.3% CC fee is about $26. But a $50 gift card would have a CC fee of only $0.65. Sounds like a fair saving to buy a gift card first before booking.

        • +2

@muncan: A $50 gift card attracts no credit card fees. Buying a gift card and immediately using it to purchase your flight is a well known way of avoiding the credit card fee that Qantas charges. You just need to be aware of the restrictions on using gift cards (eg no multi-city flights, flights must originate in Australia, etc).

        • @muncan: yeah. That is a pain. I've got about 600k points left to use but maybe will use instead for an upgrade on a flight that used a gift card.

        • @muncan:
$2000 taxes and fees! that's far too much even for a RTW ticket.

        • @danielh: Same

@jackofspade: I know, right? First class though.

        • @muncan:

          Bugger. Well I'm out.

cannot be used for multi-city, Classic Flight Reward or Points Plus Pay - Flights bookings(qantas.com)

I've triggered it with the fees from a classic flight reward. Just need to make sure you're redeeming local flights, or a return flight originating in Australia. Then you'll be charged the fees from Qantas AU.

        • +1

@ChickenTalon: Triggered it with a gift card? We're talking about gift cards here.

        • @muncan: My bad, i was just responding to your highlighted classic flight reward

No, a gift card can't be used to pay for those fees with the flight, I've tried that myself. But paying the fees directly will trigger the rebate itself.

        • @ChickenTalon: Do you see the irony in paying for fees with a credit card, which incurs more fees? Fees!

        • @muncan: Yep, it's pretty mad. Increasing profits any way they can. Often the fees with a flight reward are higher than the flight booked with a low-cost carrier.

    • I can accept the second part, but do you know the first as a fact? Because I'm just thinking they could set up as a different payment receiver for flights vs gift cards, cruises, etc and that would trigger AMEX to pay the credit or not.
A little elaborate yes, but I'm hesitant to try this amount without some confirmation…

    • Thanks for reminding us the privacy laws, have you brought this to HArdly Norman who sent their customers info to Amex to reserve the cashback if the customer purchased gift card?

      • Harvey Normans did this? Do you have proof?

Someone who had their info sent must contact the OAIC immediately..

        https://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy-law/privacy-act/

        https://www.oaic.gov.au/about-us/contact-us

        https://forms.business.gov.au/aba/oaic/privacy-complaint-/

      • Well technically they wouldn't need to tell AMEX that you bought a gift card.
They could just tell AMEX that you no longer met the eligibility criteria for the deal.

        • How could Qantas know the terms or care about the terms of AMEX? Why are companies protecting AMEX, eg. Harvey Normans, Westfields etc….

        • @Turd:

Because these kind of deals are usually shared with both AMEX and retailer contributing funds against the rebate (wouldn't be surprised if its fully funded by the retailer). So they're just protecting themselves

        • @Thrawn: Is that so? Source?

        • @Turd:

  • Good for Biz flights to Noumea next year.

And 5 QF points per $ for Gift certificate which I might use this for.

  • Anyone know if these gift vouchers can be used to pay for Jetstar flights?

    • Don't think it can.

    • Maybe if done through Qantas online booking system and you have 1 Qantas leg in your flights (or a points pay option) otherwise you get directed to the Jetstar site. Not sure though.

    • Online on my PC, it redirected me to the Jetstar site, was annoyed because no cashback.

I then tried through mobile on the mobile site, and it remained on Qantas and went through as a Qantas transaction on my Amex App.

      • So are you saying you can book a Jetstar flight and can trigger the cashback if you use the Qantas app?

        • Not sure about the app, but the qantas mobile site let me.

          I got the email afterwards

  • Would this work on Qantas hotel bookings like apple purchases work on harvey norman credits?

    • +1

No, you won't get credits for booking on Qantas Hotel Booking site, I tried and did not receive the credits because the merchant name is: Hooroo Pty Ltd not Qantas

      • Thanks very much, that saved me finding out the hard way.

  • +13

I checked my statement to see how the merchant appeared the last time I purchased a Qantas gift card, and both gift card and flight purchases show as QANTAS AIR AUSTRALIA.

I've gone ahead and purchased $500/$200 in gift cards, and received the Amex email immediately, so I'm confident I will receive the credit, but will know for sure in a couple of days.

Even if I don't get the credit, 5pts/$ on flights I'd intended to book regardless is nice.

    • Thanks for testing this out…if you could please let us know when you get the credit.

    • Did you receive the credit yet?

      • Sure did! Less than a week after purchase it came through.

        • I'm waiting for it. Theoretically not to late still but looks suspicious, ie. nothing on account yet about redemption but another deal that was redeemed at the same time is showing "Redeemed". None credited yet tho.

        • @superready: Did you get the email from Amex immediately after purchase?

        • @bern1992: that email came through immediately…also in statement showing "Qantas Air Australia"

  • Wow just before xmas this will save a ton of money

  • +1

damn, only one voucher can be used per booking. So much for my plan trigger this across multiple cards before booking an international flight.

    • Damn. And assume it's $100,200,500,1000 cards available for purchase?

      • You can get 250, 350 etc as well.

I'm thinking of getting 2 x 350 that way i can book wife and i on same flights but use two separate bookings. Having 500 and 200 is more awkward for MEL-Queensland flights that all seem to be around the $150-200 mark - meaning a $500 voucher might be annoying.

        • Once you do the separate bookings, call up and have them linked. Then it's the same as if you'd booked them together.

        • I was trying to book 4 x return flights. Cost was $372 per person. First time I bought 1 x $500 voucher and had to split the booking. First for $372 on voucher, second for $128 on voucher and $244 on card. Total was $744 so triggered statement credit email.

The better way to do it was to get 2 x $350 instead like what you're doing. Because the voucher is for 2 people as opposed to 1 like the first time. So on card number two, I bought 2 x $350 in one transaction. I think it should have triggered email. Was my husband's card so I didn't get the email. Voucher arrived and let's you buy two tickets. I put the balance $44 on the second card.

          Hope that helps.

book two one way flights on two separate cards?

      • One return flight is cheaper than two one way flights.

        • Not for trans tasman and domestic flights

  • +5

Literally booked flights last night and about to go on flight this AM. Fml.

    • +3

Look on the bright side - you did a good deed by funding this promotion :)

    • Lol impulse flight??

      • +2

Got a good match on tinder.

  • Can anyone confirm whether you can pay taxes and fees of award flight bookings with gift cards?

    • +3

No, quoting General Terms for both Qantas Gift Vouchers and Qantas Customer Care Vouchers:

cannot be used for multi-city, Classic Flight Reward or Points Plus Pay - Flights bookings or redeemed for cash or other goods or services such as additional baggage or seat selection.

      • Bummer. Thanks for confirming!

    • +2

If it helps I booked an award flight last night and used my Amex to pay the taxes and got the amex email after the transaction was completed. Technically taxes for an award flight are a "flight" so It should meet the terms and conditions.

Vouchers are available in denominations of AU$50, up to AU$500. With the extended option of a AU$1,000 and AU$2,000 voucher. Amounts are in Australian dollars and redeemable for one-way or return Qantas domestic or international flights departing Australia only.

Visit qantas.com/voucherterms for full terms and conditions or refer to the email attaching the voucher.

Anyone know if qf voucher purchase will trigger the free flight on an Amex ultimate card?

  • -2

If I book a fully refundable flight, and then cancel after a month or two, does that mean I'll get $150 for nothing?

    • Do they still have the fully refundable fare?

      • +1

good point, I think business flex class is still fully refundable

      • +1

Any flexible fare is usually refundable. Why don't you have a look your self when going through the booking process of the website.

  • +1

Still not cheap enough for me to travel with them :-(

  • +2

Im sniffing at flights to the American West coast and been looking at the various suppliers. Both Zuji and webjet are selling gift vouchers this month for 10% extra value. ie $1100 voucher for $1000. Thats another option.
Actually, just noticed that vouchers cant be used for multi-city flights. eg. leaving America from a different city. THAT WOULD BE USEFUL INFO TO INCLUDE IN THE VOUCHER Ts and Cs…

  • +6

Voucher triggers it. And get the 5 x QF points as well promo. Reminder that the voucher is really like buying a ticket without the locations. So you must purchase the voucher for the correct number of pax and if you buy a voucher for $50 and 2 people, it will charge you for $100. You can change the names later on the voucher. Another tip. When you make the transaction do a screen snip / print. That way you have the reference number of the voucher doesn't come through (they can take 2 days) to make it easier to trace (or use the credit card number).

    • Doesn't the offer exclude Gift Cards? Or is a voucher different to a Gift Card?

      • +1

Don't know. All previous promos have worked buying the QF gift voucher. And This one has as well. As others have noted the billing is same as if buying a QF ticket. When you buy the gift voucher, it actually sits in 'manage your bookings' section i.e it looks and smells like a faux booking.

        • Did you receive the credit yet?

        • +1

          @superready:

Sure have. Have used it 8 times across our genuine and bank issued cards.

  • -7

book a business class fare, refund later. Get $150 back. Winning.

    • -2

      risky but tempted

    • +8

They'll probably stop doing these promos if people start pulling this stuff.

  • So the flight does not have to be before 20th Dec. Is it correct?

    • +2

The flight has to be bought in the promotion period. The date of the flight can be any time.

      • Thanks. In that case the gift card approach would be much more suitable for me.

  • +1

So if i'm understanding the T&C's correctly. If I pay $650 for a flight in one transaction, and then spend another $50 or so (e.g. reserved/exit row seat, baggage upgrade) in a second transaction a few minutes later that should trigger the $150 credit?

    • Yeah that should work
