It would be nice if they fly from Perth as well

Economy on JAL is brilliant, but…

Just note the dates are the uncomfortable rainy, hot, humid and typhoon seasons.

Because flights are not direct (transfers in Tokyo) the JAL option is not much faster than going via Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Taipei, Seoul, Bangkok, Shanghai etc

    • Just note the dates are the uncomfortable rainy, hot, humid and typhoon seasons.

They can be, but it's also when all the wonderful summer festivals are on (personal favourite being the Yosakoi in Kochi), so can definitely still be a great trip. But yes just be prepared to change plans and escape to the other side of the country if you know a typhoon is en route perhaps.

  • Where do 1st timers fly to in Japan? 2 + 2 kids family so keen for suggestions please.

    • +7

Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto are the most common 3 cities for anyone to go to. Plenty to do in Tokyo alone if you don't want to travel between cities.

    • +3

Depends what you are looking for. We've just come back from our first trip, 2.5 weeks. Flew into Fukuoka, road trip around Kyushu, then onto Hiroshima, Kyoto and Osaka.
We loved Kyushu, particularly the road trip and getting to see parts of Japan you don't get to see in the cities. Also was refreshing to not be surrounded by other tourists which is less than I can say for Kyoto and Osaka.
Don't get me wrong, there were parts of Kyoto and Osaka we loved if you can get over the crowds. It was also easier to communicate in English in those areas, but that was more of a negative than a positive for us. For adults I'd say getting away from the bigger cities is the go (our son is 18 and wants to move to Fukuoka now) but for younger families you are probably better off based in those cities, with more to see and do in a smaller radius.

    • For 1st timers suggest sticking to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, maybe somewhere easy to go from those there big cities.
Once you got it figured you should explore the country, rent a car

    • Hanoda is closer than Narita, Depends on itinerary. How old are the 'kids'. Anyway, if Disney (there's 2 Disney parks next to each other). I would suggest somewhere close to a station in Tokyo. If you want quiet, I would suggest the Ginza area (I stayed here and Shimbashi), hotels vary and most budget friendly do not have restaurants as such, so will need to research where you will have breakfast.
I stayed at Daiwa in Ginza. MCDonalds two blocks away.
Shimbashi is very busy and you don't see too many kids or families around.

    • As mentioned above, beware of the rainy season, its not very friendly for kids (unless of course if they are older kids).

I was there during wet season it rained about half the time for the course of our trip. Easy for adults but messy with little ones..

  • @IWantThatFlight do deals for sydney to vancouver often come up? Thanks.

Brisbane in Jun and Oct - Nov/25

OP, you didn't list any "Oct - Nov/25" flights for Brisbane.

And looking at the last one you listed for Brisbane, it's flying BNE-HKG-NRT via Cathay Pacific, only the last leg is on JAL. Which makes your "Japan Airlines Ret" title rather deceptive.

I just did a search myself, selecting "JAL Only", and it keeps showing flights where only part of the journey is via JAL. Is your airline selection filter broken?

Edit: I just checked several more of the flights from Brisbane you listed, and ALL of them have the international leg via Cathay Pacific. The first two in the list have no JAL flight at all!

    • +1

JAL does not fly to Brisbane

      • +1

JAL does not fly to Brisbane

I figured that out. But in that case, putting a "JAL Only" filter should return "no flights found", instead of ignoring the filter. Any other filter, if set too restrictively, DOES return "no flights found".

If OP is putting up a title saying "Japan Airlines Ret", I would expect the international leg to be with JAL, and that's not what is listed.

        Such flights do exist, e.g.:
        BNE-SYD on Qantas
        SYD-HND on JAL
        HND-NGO on JAL

Although I'm not sure that particular trip is workable, with only 1h20 in Sydney, would that be enough time to de-plane, change terminals, and get through security? And as it's two different airlines, maybe baggage collection as well?

  • Got any longer dates? Looking for 4-6 weeks around August

  • Is it easy to get from Fukuoka to Busan? Anyone who did recently?

    • +1

Piece of piss. You can fly in about an hour or if you have more time to spare you can take the ferry which takes a bit over three and a half hours.

      • +1

The JR Kyushu high-speed jetfoil ferry is no longer in operation after last year's scandal, only slow ferries now.

        • Slow is 3.5 hours?

          • +1

@Bjay: The jetfoil was 3.5 hours, others are overnight.

      • Thank you. Would you recommend flying back from fukuoka or busan?
