    Would this include Jetstar flights?

    • +1

i was booking a flight for 4 last night and Jetstar charge $17 per person per booking in fee's if you pay by CC or Paypal, 4 tickets is $68 (over 1/3 of 1 persons fare) just to pay for the booking.. the voucher if it worked with jetstar would basically pay for your Amex fee's .. lol

      • +2

I'd report that to the ACCC if I were you…

        • +2

Yep i'm with you there, my wife made the point that at most it would cost them 1.5-2% in CC fee's this was nearly 10% of the total!

        • +1

          @scud70:

It's not a reasonable cost for the service, they've cracked down on other bank fees in the past. If enough people complain, then they might do something about it.

        • @jv: i'd have to read the T&C's im sure they've got the lawyers to write it up nicely to make it look like it's a cost that they are passing on, still ridiculous fee though.

        • +2

          @scud70:

to make it look like it's a cost that they are passing on

The only way this will change will be if people make formal complaints…

If they're using these fees to force people onto their own credit cards, then there might a valid avenue to pursue here…

        • @jv: yup no fee if you use a Jetstar visa card

        • +1

          @scud70:

no fee if you use a Jetstar visa card

          thought so…

Sounds more like a penalty then, rather than recovering costs of the service…

        • +1

          @scud70:
Ahh common mistake, just because a lawyer writes it up, doesn't make it legal. They add lots of legally unenforceable stuff in t&c's or contracts, which they wave in tour face if you complain. But if you call them on it, they can't enforce it.

I have a mate who writes legal contracts for a living. They do it all the time. Apparently its not illegal to write legally unenforceable clauses into a contract. Go lawyers!

        • @supabrudda: incorrect. It is ILLEGAL to misrepresent rights in a consumer contract. Statements like: "no returns" or "buyer waves their rights to legal remedies" are illegal to put into contracts or display in stores.

If that's what your lawyer mate does then he's an arsehole, in addition to breaking consumer law.

        • @ChickenTalon: he doesn't write consumer legal contracts.
The point is just because it's in a contract, it deosn't mean it's legally enforceable.

and yes he is a wealthy a-hole.

        • for once i agree with jv. Reporting it is the only way it will change

        • +1

@jv ACCC is already onto the airlines after the RBA weren't able to rein it in

          http://www.heraldsun.com.au/travel/travel-advice/rba-crackdo…
          http://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/accc-takes-action-again…
          https://www.choice.com.au/about-us/media-releases/2014/june/…

While the RBA was focused on trying to bring down the cost of the credit card surcharge to something more reasonable, the ACCC is taking aim at the fact that the costs aren't disclosed in the headline price.

    • I am interested to know the answer to this question too. Assume you meant booking Jetstar flights through the Qantas website?

      • Yes that's what I meant. And hopefully I can even book the current sale fares to Hawaii… Might try booking tonight see what happens. I guess it depends if the payment comes up on your AMEX statement as Qantas rather than Jetstar. I think maybe you can't get the cheaper prices on Jetstar flights if you book via Qantas.com? But it might at least have bags included?

      • If you go to Qantas site and try to book jetstar flight within your booking, it will show a pop up saying the flight is provided by Jetstar and you will be forwarded to Jetstar.com. And I don"t see how you can claim this is from Qantas.com

My previous booking with Jetstar.com has "Jetstar' in the trandaction description.

  • What happens if you register and don't end up taking the deal?

Do you get penalised/blacklisted for future deals or something?

The Qantas one looks good, and I MAY need it…

    • No, you won't get penalised.

    • What happens if you register and don't end up taking the deal?

      The bikies will get you.

      Scary stuff.

  • Can't find this offer for my american express issued card. May be only for AMEX connect users

    • +4

Use the manual link. Definitely works.

    • @gaurangmp

Can't find this offer for my american express issued card. May be only for AMEX connect users

      Works on my ANZ

      • +1

        Yup ! manual link works…

  • Only if this was out with the Qantas sale 2 weeks ago when I bought a ticket :'(

  • Cheers op!! Will help with the Christmas flights to home for the missus and I!!

  • I wonder if the charge is billed as QFF will that trigger the credit…

  • +14

Remember part pay with a voucher to avoid CC fees.

    • Part pay?

Could you please elaborate on this? How does one go about getting a voucher?

    • Interesting, good to know, wonder if I can do the same with Jetstar.

  • Nice. Thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP. Anyone know if Qantas allows split payments?

    • +1

For a flight over $700,you can

Buy one $350 voucher with AmEx card 1.
Apply the voucher to book your flight.
Pay the remaining amount with AmEx card 2.
Avoid CC fee and receive 2*$50=$100 back.

Remember you can only use 1 voucher per booking. You cannot stack 2+ vouchers.

  • Anything good to buy at Staples?

  • Thanks OP

  • How about Qantas gift cards? It says in the T&C that giftcard purchases are excluded though.

    • American Express wouldn't know from your statement if you're buying a gift card or making a normal purchase. As with previous offers at LiquorLand and Vintage Cellars (of many other participants), you can safely but a gift card and you'll receive those credits.

  • +1

I absolutely hate Jetstar model and will use alternatives unless its a must. The oncharges and fees when you are booking with them are just aver the top including the cc fees. I must say its not just Jetstar a lot of other online booking/purchasing companies are getting onto this idea.

  • Just recently booked a flight and on the QANTAS website it was a $30 credit card fee per passenger vs. No Fee on the Emirates website … for exactly the same flight. Don't know how they justify it, their partner airlines certainly don't do it.

  • +1

Dammit, just spent over $1000 with QF on all their recent sales. Even spent $400 last night at 11pm and appears on my AMEX as 3 September. Boo Hoo!

    • in the same boat.

    • I did the same thing, however looking at the prices now it seems the price have gone up. Maybe you should check yours btw.

  • -5

Could one book a business class airfare, wait for the $50 credit statement and then cancel and get a refund?

    • +3

When you cancel, the credit statement will be reversed.

    • What isdnman said.
If you can find a way to get a partial refund on the card you pay with then maybe?

  • Seeing as Qantas and Emirates are partners, I'm wondering if there's anyway way to take advantage of this and the emirates 10% off too…

    • I think it'll just need to go through the Qantas "portal"

    • Can you use Target voucher in Coles ?
Or Bunning gift card at Target ?

      • +1

        Target voucher in Coles

Possibly, if it is a Coles Group and Myer gift card. If it is a Target branded gift card, it's only valid in Target.

        Bunnings gift card at Target

        No.

  • I have 9 AMEX's that I can register.

But ehh so much money to laydown first…

    • Just register and don't buy a thing. Will feel better :-)

      • +2

not sure who didn't like your idea. This is what I do - accept every offer in case I happen to purchase something that gives me credit. I have had a few credits this way.
Same as the coles and woolies deals, I activate them, but don't tell any joint card holders what the deals are so they aren't persuaded to buy something they wouldn't have otherwise.

  • +1

Any idea if you can use your card to buy a $350 flight voucher, which will then give you a year to spend the $350 instead of having to do it by October 4th?

    • +1

You are then limited your choice to only Qantas. You can't even use your Qantas voucher for Jetstar flight. The saving from cheaper flight by others may be more than $50.

      • But ok if you know you're gonna fly QF anyway.

        • +2

Even if you are die-hard QANTAS-Only fans, consider the limition:

From Qantas: "Important Information about Flight Vouchers"

'cannot' be used for multi-city, Classic Flight Rewards or Points Plus Pay - Flights booking or redeemed for cash or other goods or services such as additional baggage or seat selection.

Only one voucher can be redeemed per booking.

        • @coprocessor8087:

is the multi-city restriction enforced on the gift cards?

    • yes you will have a year. the voucher has a 12 month expiry. you can also use the voucher for multiple, separate bookings

  • Has anybody else noticed that when you register a supp card now, the primary cardholder is also automatically registered? (Unfortunately I can't check it the other way around, i.e. Primary > Supp because mine's already done…)

  • Buy 3 boxes of Reflex paper at Staples to get a box free. There's 5 reams in each box so that's 20 reams of paper @ $75.

Spend additional $5+ and you get the Amex $20 cash back, bringing 4 boxes to $60 or $15 per box or $3 per ream.

    And free delivery.

    http://www.staples.com.au/page/reflex-paper-offer?ext_cid=RT…

    • I've seen Big W selling reflex $3 per ream before. So not sure whether this is a deal, considering you need to spend so much for papers.

    • Bought relfex for 3.50 a ream at coles though ozbargain deal a few weeks ago.

    • +1

I've still got paper left over from this deal last year at $2.50 per reams of paper-

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/129049

      • I still have the free reflex paper from Staples.

  • So Qantas.com.au has a fee of $30 online with credit cards - does this mean that this $50 amex credit just cover part of that, and the effective saving is $20?

    • See above hack posted by gccmelb using vouchers to part pay and avoid the fee…

      • Yep, saw that. thanks!

    • +1

If your flight is cheaper from Jetstar and others, you may not even have that $20 saving.

  • +1

planning a overseas trip in couple of months

    • book via Qantas website costs $1029 + $30 credit card fee - $50 Amex statement credit = $1029.
    • did bit of research online, best price found for the exact same Qantas return flights quoted $973, and there is no extra credit card charges.
    • +1

      $1029 + $30 credit card fee - $50 Amex statement credit = $1009,not $1029.

If you have 2 AmEx cards, you buy one $350 voucher with one card first. When you book your flight, apply the voucher and pay the remaining amount with the other card.By doing this, you not only avoid CC fee,but also receive 2*$50=$100 back from AmEx.

So your flight cost can be $929.

      • lol cant believe that i got that wrong.

voucher and credit = no credit card charge? did not know about it at all (any link?). seems good if that works, however not sure whether it would void travel insurance.

      • indicated in terms - Only purchases on flights are included.

so probably wont get $50 for getting the voucher.

        • +1

I can confirm that the biller for purchasing a voucher shows up in my bank statement as "QANTAS AIR AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA AU" which is the same as flight bookings, so don't worry about not getting the cashback.

        • @zzyss:

Thanks! Can you please let us know once you've received the cashback? Cheers.

        • @zzyss: Did you get a confirmation email saying you qualified for a statement credit?

        • @zzyss:

          E-mail received instantly on purchase.

        • @zzyss:
purchased a voucher using CBA Amex almost half an hour ago, no email yet.
however I recall that with previous offers, it happened a few times - no email but amex credit showed up in a day or two.

  • Reckon if you booked Qantas Box Office tickets to a show, or hotels or car hire if it would be classfied as eligible spend?

    • most likely not as a different merchant

  • -1

Anyone have link for Qantas Gift Cards or Bunnings or Target vouchers as mentioned by some posters?

    • No idea where you got Bunnings or Target from, but here's Qantas:
      http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/gift-vouchers/globa…

      • Just multiple vouchers able to be used on a single booking, so if I have 3 amex cards and I purchased 3 x $350 vouchers, can I used all of them in one booking?

        • No you can't. T&Cs say only 1 voucher per booking.

  • Just a reminder that Qantas gift cards are "redeemable for one-way or return Qantas domestic flights or Qantas international flights departing Australia only'.

So if you are buying tickets for someone who are departing from overseas, you won't be able to use the gift card.

  • Thanks zzyss.

  • Can anyone confirm if buying Qantas gift voucher gives you the cashback?

    • Yes. Someone can. Haha.

    • Bought one yesterday, but nothing yet. Will post back if it ever does come through. ;-)

      • no word?
