  • Are any of the features mentioned locked behind a subscription?
Had a bad experience a while ago after paying $50 for your android app and finding the topographic maps we behind a subscription wall that was going to cost more than the app itself on an annual basis.

    • Hi Virtual81,

No features of the HN7 Navigator require an additional subscription.

Which topographic maps are you referring to specifically?

      • Can remember specifically, but details of the subscription that goes on top of the $50 app are here…
        https://www.hemamaps.com/navigate/hema-explorer/australia/ex…
All i was after was a basic topographic map, which i thought was included in the $50 app, but when i tried to use it i the app said i needed the $60/year or $10/month subscription.

        • +1

The topographic map I think you're referring to is still available in the standard app. Go into the Hema map layer and you will see the 1:250K topographic map you're looking for there. Make it active. You can use it without upgrading to Pro.

The state topo maps & Geoscience topo maps were introduced when the Pro subscription was released and never in the standard app.

        • @captainkirk: Moving to the subscription model is a disaster IMHO. Plenty of negative feedback around regarding this from those who previously bought maps, only to find they now need to pay a yearly fee.

        • @ryangus: Ryan this is a common misunderstanding, the map content and features available in Pro have never been available in the Hema Explorer app in any capacity previously. Previous app users still have access to the same content as before - in fact we added the new Hema Explorer Map and a route generator to the app in our latest free update. Pro simply gives Hema Explorer users the ability to access even more detailed mapping and navigation tools than before, and those who don't see the value in the subscription don't have to pay any more after their initial app purchase. In this sense, the subscription is simply a bonus, not a requirement for the functionality of the app itself. Hope that makes sense.

        • @captainkirk: Didn't appear to work that way a couple of weeks ago, maybe i was doing something wrong.
I got a refund from Google.
Would be happy to try again, but would have to be some kind of free demo.
Not going to risk buying again incase it doesn't work out, doubt Google would give me a refund second time around.

      • This also begs the question - how is this unit different to a $50 Android 7" tablet with the $50 Android app installed? Not a lot of specs on the device on your website other than it has a 'large high resolution 7-inch screen' boasting an incredible 800x480 resolution. I think there's a bit of poetic licence right there.

  • I use OziExplorer ($25) on an old 7" Toshiba Android tablet permanently mounted in my 4x4, bought a 1:25k digital topo map ($99) and I'm very happy with that combo. It's not as colourful as the Hema but it shows buildings, gates, powerlines, anything that might help (and indeed helped us) navigating in the middle of nothing, particularly if you like to get off the well worn popular dirt tracks and explore those overgrown firetrails.

Also, remember that the Australia wide 1:250k topo maps + state government topo maps can be freely downloaded from Geoscience Australia and used in OziExplorer, Memory-Map etc.

I played with the HN in a mate's truck and I really liked the tracking in the Hema app - it shows all the tracks you did so you know where you had been, and where to explore next… I know there is Open GPS Tracker but having it in one app is nice.
