For phones that are $150-250, not having local warranty is OK. But at almost $400, it's a pretty big risk and no deal for me. Not to mention probable painful return process if something goes wrong and more than likely 0 after sales service.

I world rather wait for deals on last year's flagship (s6, m9 etc) to fall into that price range locally.

That's not a valid reason to neg unless you've found another store is cheaper. There are lots of die hard Xiaomi fans here willing to pay any price tag.

      • -2

Any price is an exaggeration. I have nothing against xiaomi, but buying a phone sight unseen, with no warranty, no after sales and difficult return procedure at $400 is not a deal.

If it's local stock, completely different story, shame xiaomi don't sell their phones locally.

        • +1

Nextbuying support one year Xiaomi official Warranty.

        • buying a phone sight unseen, with no warranty, no after sales and difficult return procedure at $400

Buying warranties on low cost items is something idiots do. They lose an enormous amount of money the longer they continue the idiotic practice.

        • @tonyleee:

Nextbuying refused to honor my "warranty" a while back, untill PayPal got involved. Even then they wanted me to pay for return shipping. Not worth it. My Redmi Note now sits there with a faulty USB port.

          Avoid this company.

        • Avoid this company.

Perhaps you should stop buying phones from oversea because no drop shipping company will for pay for return shipping to repair your phone.

          A faulty USB port

This is the most common problem was found on all Chinese brand phones.

Did you not see the part where I said they refused to admit there was a problem until PayPal got involved. That's what bugged me the most.

I agree with Fungi. I think the OzB community needs to be aware that buying from OS means no, or a limited warranty. My OzB Nexus 5 just died after a few days, it was bought through a shonky e-trader that was rated highly by Ozb users!! DWI have initially refused a refund and sent me the repair forms. So either way I won't get to use the phone for 1 to 2 months if it is fixed or waste 6 weeks trying to get my money back through Paypal.

So the neg works to warn people, of course the price is still a bargain but it is a complete pain in a@$e to deal with any warranty issues. If you have not been burned before, kudos to you.

        • +3

I think people already know that.

There's no need to 'warn' everyone every time an overseas deal is posted.

        • DWI have initially refused a refund and sent me the repair forms.

          There's your problem.

That's not happening any time soon. And what if you want one now?

A neg to this because you don't get local warranty would be a neg to all deals on grey imports. Do you do that?

      • A neg to this because you don't get local warranty would be a neg to all deals on grey imports. Do you do that?

Good point… well I would think about it if I cared enough about a certain deal. Obviously OzBargain doesn't have the capacity to give a seller a rating , so for me the deal gets A- (minus) rather than an A or A+. It's a good deal but it's good that people know the risk.

I think that's what gives OzB it's strength

    • The price is irrelevant when it comes to grey imports. The risk is up to the buyer. If you're not comfortable, that's fine. I don't see a valid reason to neg the deal.

    • +1

Appreciate that you are trying to provide a heads up to the ozB community re: grey import warranty status, but I dont think the neg was necessary - just the comment without a neg would have been great!

      • It's not like it's a swipe left kinda thing.

It's more like surfing at Ballina, it's just a flag to warn you there's a risk that you are on some predators lunch menu :)

        • That's not what a neg is for though. Please read the voting guidelines
If you don't like it, discuss this in site discussion
Perhaps a "Grey Import" tag should be implemented.

@cwongtech: Currency other than AUD in the title is usually a clear indication of that.

        • @Clear: Pretty much anything made by Xiaomi is a grey import.

        • @lostn: Yep. There's a reason Australia isn't listen in the Global ROMs ;)

        • @Clear: Pretty much none of the western world are included in their global rom locales.

I believe it's because Xiaomi products infringe on patents of other manufacturers (namely Apple) and if they release products outside of their restricted market, they are open to lawsuits. Where they operate it's pretty hard to get sued by Apple due to the laws not protecting Apple. That's why you get so many knock offs in China (fake iPhones, fake Galaxy — even the packaging looks identical) and no one bothers suing them or shutting them down.

        • @lostn: Pretty much. That's why they've released their Mi Box, Pistons and other accessories internationally where they won't get sued.

  • The heck is going on here

  • get the 4G ram version at this price level is recommended, i m using 3G 32GB, only about 1.3GB free at boot on 8 version of MiUi

Could be a better deal if you have CashRewards with 7% cashback.

    • The prices have actually gone down since I posted that. A white mi5 from goldway is now US $307.27 with dhl delivery. Making it cheaper than this deal not including the cash back.
