  • mmm i wanna go see this at Imax .. but they use different glasses there ;(

    damn

  • How much are the glasses? Can you use them at other 3D cinemas (are they compatible with Village, etc)?

  • What kind of glasses are these? Just polarising ones?

These are circular polarising glasses similar to the ones used by most cinemas that use tech by RealD or Masterimage 3d. If you have a pair now you can rotate them in front of the monitor you are currently looking at and the filter will alternate between a bluish or yellow hue.

Imax uses the more inferior, linearly polarising glasses. The main drawback with Imax is it does not allow as much head rotation when viewing the movie.

  • I think they're just the normal 3D glasses you get with any 3D movie you watch, and there's no point using them at another cinema as each time you pay for a 3D ticket you get a free pair of glasses lol.

    • Yeah, I was going to say… what's the point, when the 3D tax gets charged whether you want the glasses or not anyway? I have about 4 pairs sitting at home, back when Macquarie Event Cinema didn't have a recycling bin for them, and I felt too environmentally conscious to throw them away.

    • They could charge a cheaper rate if you byo 3D glasses (or more if you don't) to encourage reuse and have a simply labelling scheme to make it easier for consumers to know which ones work (even if you just had one for each cinema chain it would be a lot less waste and they could brand them for advertising revenue). Suppose they'll have to be dragged or embarrassed into doing this… I don't know why they can't reuse them like IMAX (and those tickets cost more!)

They do charge a cheaper rate if you do not want the 3D glasses.

Hoyts does not recycle the glasses, and you actually have to buy the glasses. The glasses cost $1 by the way.

Therefore, if you bring your own glasses, the tickets cost $1 less.

(Hoyts uses "RealD" technology, which is the same as what Village uses. However, most other cinemas DO NOT use the "RealD" platform, but use "Dolby3D", "IMAX" or "Masterimage" platforms instead, therefore the glasses are NOT cross compatible.)
