Pity you missed out in the i7 FHD Acer for only $52 more

Say "NO" to Acer laptop. No thanks!

    • As a former acer technician I can just confirm that. Stay away as far as you can

      • As a former technician, what brand would you recommend?

        • I have only worked for Acer so can't say that much about other brands. Most brands have entry level and business class products. I personally would go with a Dell latitude or maybe hp probook

        • @dosada: NOTHING matters. I have used Sony VAIO, Toshiba, HP Pavillion, and Acer Travelmate so far in my personal and professional life. Each one of them has screwed me at some point in time (some more, some less), irrespective of the brand and price. Surprisingly, cheaper ones worked better in my case. What I learnt is that brand doesn't really matter. They are all products of the similar factory in China if not the same. Get an extra RAM and enjoy the speed. No point even looking at the brand while choosing a laptop.

        • @virhlpool:

Lenovos have somehow gotten shittier and yet more expensive, but if they do one thing right is when something goes wrong, they fix it.

      • Very curious, could you please clarify what in particular? Hard to repair? Build quality? etc?

I've owned a numerous amount of different brands, Compaq, HP, Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and never had one fail on me. I just find some brands make it extremely difficult to swap HDD/RAM but that's about it.

I have however, seen many faulty laptops and dare say most of it are customer induced damage.
Eg. laptop with drop marks having flickering LCD panel or HDD clicking. Laptop constantly overheating due to fan clogged with cat hairs or been used on the floor/bed all the time.

    • i had an acer aspire 5315, that thing was great!

however now they are making them very thin and flimsy now. my dog stood on the laptop and that was enough to crack the screen.

wouldn't touch asus ever again, major issues in hardware and software and they are extremely op-positional to repairs.

lenovo thinkpads have been good but heard bad things about their new models.

not that laptops last for a long time anyway, but it seems like they are trying to make them so they break and obviously a lot of people give up pursuing them and just buy new ones because its easier.

  • How odd…I bought this laptop (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/43581) five years ago and in five years time this deal doesn't seem much better at all. I would have thought things have changed more - or is the processor somehow way more awesome?

    • Quite a bit different from your model. Looks like many many upgrades have happened to it since to source the parts of the times. Cant exactly buy a first generation i5 these days like the one in your laptop brand new..

    • i would say technology is artificially held back to keep prices high and profits healthy

    • Inflation and changes in the strength of the Aussie dollar has a lot to do with how much you pay for technology nowdays. Not to mention AMD pretty much dropping out of the game and Intel enjoying much of the market share. They are almost a monopoly now.

      For instance:

Core i5 2500K back then costs $225 dollars. Take a look at MSY's PDF price list from 2012, February.

      http://web.archive.org/web/20120701000000*/https://www.msy.c…

Nowadays, a Core i5 unlocked Skylake 6600K now costs $325. Take a look at the prices today:

      https://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

And guess what: due to inflation, when I sold my Core i5 2500k on ebay it fetched for $200 (that's right, my 3 year old processor depreciated by just 25 dollars!)

I went and took a look at this one on Friday when the sale first started. It's even uglier in the flesh the poor thing…

The i5 is the only redeeming feature as the screen is pretty mediocre. I wasn't expecting anything amazing for the resolution its just the colours didn't pop and the viewing angles were Meh! If you drop an SSD in it and swear you will never take it outside so the public will ever see it's hideousness its definitely a value proposition.

For me I might wait to see if an i3 or i5 (as there isn't much between those 6th Gen CPU's) Inspiron 13 with an FHD Screen comes up for a bit more money at the Dell Outlet.

I know that's some apples v oranges comparison as 15.6" might be more your speed for all those "dedicated number pad is a must-have" people.. whoever you are.

  • This is my favourite Acer deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/194067. I added some extra RAM to it and the machine works like a pro for day to day home use. Can't go wrong at that price.
