  • Wow pretty good for the price.

However, the casing is pretty bland, the speakers are woeful, the headphone DAC is also woeful, the screen quality is pretty poor (you can physically see the pixels).

    It's a cheap system so I can't really complain :)

If your looking for a cheap no frills gaming system then I would probably get this.

However, you can get a much better notebook which addresses the issues that I mentioned above (not to mention better build quality,a much better GPU AT5650, an extra usb and esata port, lightscribe, gigabit ethernet….. okay alot more features :D) from DSE for the same price.

      Link please? ;)

Please tell me you're not referring to this:

      http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XC8892/hp-pavilion-dv6-3131t…

…with no stock available anywhere that I can see, and seriously, HP…WTF, their build quality is rubbish!!! I watched yet another one die under 12mths of age just last Monday!

I was hoping you may have been thinking ASUS et.al., but HP…yuk!

      • Something tells me there will be no stock of whatever this other offer would be

      • The build quality on this Acer is even worse mate :) (even though it suppose to be a business model :/)

I have owned many HP notebooks (including the DV6-3131TX, and an older 2006 generation DV5) and both are working strongly do this day. No issues what so ever.

There were 3 (4 including display) available at Gungahlin the last time I checked this morning.

        • +1

Gungahlin, right, ACT…431kms away…now both yours & my location shows as Newy…do you reckon that's a reasonable commute for a laptop purchase?

FWIW, I have extensive experience with both of these brands, I'd take Acer over HP any day! How many Acer laptops have you owned or used? How can you speak to the build quality of these units???

Frankly, I've not seen one of the Acers fail, but MOST of the HP's I've run across have the same glaring faults that HP won't fix. You might want to google some of the HP fun'n'games people have!

In fact, you should buy yourself a lottery ticket if you've had a trouble free run out of the DV5 & DV6 series, coz you're an extremely lucky person who's in the minority bro!

I live in Canberra now Stew (due to ANU), however when I registered for this site I was living in Newcastle.

Stewballs, I also have extensive experience with both brands:

Acer Laptops Owned: 3 (a netbook and 2 mid range notebooks)
          Acer Laptops Used: 6

HP Notebooks Owned: 4 (4 notebooks ranging from a cheapy to High End notebooks)
          HP Notebooks Used: 7

In regards to the build quality, it's pretty hard to say as it's generally determined by the price range. However, in this case the HP wins hands down. (I own the HP 3131TX and had an extensive play with the travel-mate whilst in Sydney and the DV6 definitely outclasses it).

:) I probably should buy a lottery ticket however there are alot of people who have never had problems either not just me. The only reason why you would consider HP poor 'was' due to their DV6000 series with the faulty 8400GT GPU. This was not HP's fault at all but rather Nvidias.

Lol, I glimpsed 'ANU' got scared about where the conversation may have been headed! Thank goodness for acronyms! :p

We've got literally dozens of this generation Acer lappy at work, I've got the use of one myself, like I say, none of them ever seem to break down! I've got quite a few friends who own Acer laptops, I even own an older gemstone one myself - never a hint of drama & always very well spec'd for the money!

What a lot of people misinterpret as 'build quality' is actually 'finish', completely different notions IME; now I'm a pragmatist, I'm happy to sacrifice form over function when it comes to bang for buck. I don't care if they're not the prettiest, generally you'll get significantly better specs from Acer than any other brand, and the reliability IME is just fine! What particular problems did you have with yours?

Conversely, at work we have a pile of DV5 & DV6 HP's that need mobos that HP Aust won't come to the party on replacing, even though the IT dept & service agent agree they need it! Many of my friends also own various DV series HPs that suffer from the well documented faults (display probs & plain dead) that are almost a given for the series! Like I said, a quick google will reveal some very common faults that HP are flat out ignoring!!!

I have little time for HPA, because like the work ones, despite being in warranty, HPA are jerking these folks and their service agents around over warranty repairs, hence my reluctance to recommend the brand. I've had dealings with HPA myself, they're as stubborn as mules, and just as ignorant!

just as a side note: i tried to price match this offer at jb-hifi and they told me they could'nt do it because the 'cost of price is too low' lol

        • I've just price matched the HP (mentioned above) at jb-hifi, no problems thankfully :)

  • Hirokuro, which one u rr efering to at DSE???

    • Gungahlin Canberra

      • Hirokuro
        Location
        Newcastle

Just driving past were we? :p

        • Nope I live in Canberra now (due to ANU), however when I registered for this site I was living at Newcastle. ;)

Thanks for reminding me though… I should probably change it :)

        • +1

How long have you been down there dude, have you acclimatised to the winters yet?

I spent a fair bit of time in Canberra myself years ago, I never got used to seeing my red car completely white in the mornings! ;)

        • This is my first year at the Australia National University. The weather isn't much different compared to what I've experienced back in Newcastle. However time will only tell once winter comes around :).

        • Get yourself some winter woolies dude, it's a whole lot colder than Newy! It's nice though! ;)

The up side is that you're a lot closer to the snow if you want to ski/snowboard! :)

bought Toshiba Satellite L650/0ED Laptop for $660 during harvey norman 40% all toshiba sale and very happy about it.

    • I think this one was a steal…

  • Acer build quality is always something to look for. I think with the introduction of the sandy bridge chips, these old i3-i7 laptops are great value. Go for Lenovo or Asus instead for similar price.

I own this particular acer and can agree with some of the comments.
Don't like much the keyboard, mono speakers, general plastic feel. Screen is fine to my eyes.
I think this one comes with $99 cashback as well until end of april.

    • -3

      not worth the $99 cashback.

      • +2

Well, to me i5 with 420m for less than $500 is quite worth it. Agree that receiving those cashbacks usually take a while but hey, I've got time.

    • Hey man, you sure about the cashback? Thank you.

    • No cashback on this specific ACER LX.R5302.089 model :(

I have an Acer laptop since 2006 (1640) and have never had any problem with it, using it every day for more than 8 hours. Should I buy me a lottery ticket?

    • +1

No, sorry you're not lucky, you're just normal! ;)

You'll find most of the complaints about Acer are actually baseless; ignorant folk just think they're crap because they're cheaper! Don't just believe me though, here's some reviews of same model, just slightly different spec:

I agree !! I had an Acer laptop for many years and found it to be a very good product. I have also heard many bag HP laptops and currently have one of those which is also very good.
I frequently find that quite often the opinions passed by some people without a damn clue are based on asthetics or some other worthless point. It all comes down to how good you are at reading between the lines and researching for yourself. You make the final decision.

Also take the recommendation of sales people with a lot of scepticism as there is no guarantee given with their suggestion.

There are a couple of brands that people praise frequently and I know one of those is an extremely fragile unit and has one of the highest failure rates in the business. :-(
It is not Acer or HP btw.

        • Please inform us of the brand xywolap :)

        • Compaq?

  • I just bought this today,
so far so good, just the usual crapware, installed, really surprised about the weight (only 3kgs)

  • This has now sold out,
