Cashier not taking NZ coins

Hi all,

Was at Aldi tonight and paid for my groceries in cash which included some coins. As the cashier was counting the money she picked out a NZ 20c coin I had given her and said she couldn't take it. She gave the coin back and asked for another 20c.

I know it was a NZ coin but was quite surprised by her response. Has anyone had this experience happen to them?

wtf Seriously???? Why not give some Yens or Rupees next time.

    • +88

OzBargainer's try to sneak in New Zealand 10c and 20c pieces because they are worth less than AUD

      • +41

        save 5%….

    • +16

I thought Yen was both singular and plural - like 'sheep'.

      • +55

I suppose you could pay in sheep as well, chances are if you regularly deal with NZ currency you'd be privy to sheep business too…

    • +3

I once accidently paid using a $2 fijian coin as a $1 AU coin and was rejected. funny thing is its worth around $1.30AUD

      • probably foreign exchange fees will cost more than that

    • +11

Aldi accepted my payment in eneloops.

    • Come on…why would you be surprised that aldi didn't accept your n.z. coin. Different currency. It's not worth it to their shop.

  • +35

    LMAO WTF

  • +166

You know New Zealand isn't part of Australia right?

      • +35

I work in tourism, I tell people very day.

        • +1

im trying to go into tourism industry career. Currently in construction. Any tips on where to start?

        • +5

Dye your hair bleach blonde and slather yourself in fake tanner

        • -1

@outlander: bleach and blonde are different colours

        • @Thenarrator:
Correct, but it's the saying that's used. "She's got bleached blonde hair."

      • +20

I'm sure most people have either intentionally or not, used foreign coins and got away with it.

But when they were refused, were they surprised it was rejected? I don't think so!

If someone owe you AUD$100, would you be fine if they paid you with NZD$100 or even 100 yen?

        • +11

Honestly, I actually would take the $100 NZ… the amount of times I lend people money and it never flies back!

        • haha, you would have to be a sucker to accept 100 yen…
might be a good trick to play on someone to swap a 1000 yen note for a $100 AUD note

      • +5

Not everyone check every single coin tendered. Sometimes we receive a pound mistaken for $2. Once detected it can be refused. How hard is that to understand?

      • -5

This is a totally valid question. New Zealand coins are common enough that is rather not waste my time telling people off for using them. I have never had that experience either

        We'd get wool jumpers!

    • Wait. Next you are going to tell me Australia is not part of America? Why are we going to all their wars then!

      • Because it'd be rude not to.

  • +97

Why not try a flattened bottle top next time? :P

    • +41

      Got change for a button?

      • +17

How many staples do you want for it?

        • +18

Depends… where are the staples from? I don't want no foreign staples…

        • +10

@toristo: They're local, made of bent coppers.

        • +9

@greenpossum: Well in that case, I'll take the brown paper bag thanks Sarge

        • +5

I'll deal with you. I am on a staple diet.

    • Well, this guy got a game out of bottle tops….

  • +28

Did you ask if they accept Bitcoin?

    • +9

Only through an NFC implant handshake.

  • +14

lol … I'm hoping you are trolling OP

  • +75

    Sigh

Many times these forums make me fear for humanity

This is 1 of those moments

  • +3

happens all the time, fair enough too it isn't Aussie currency.

  • +49

    I am with you OP.

Aldi should accept all forms of currency. Seashells, turds (yes they were currency once), salt, fish.

    • -1

Turd is not a currency , its a synonym for poop.

      • +5

Turds from various animals have in the past been used as currency in various countries.

So has salt, gold, seashells and a multitude of other things.

        • +10

Perhaps you could give us one documented example of turds being used as currency.

        • +3

@Ninjastud: Yes, I need to know for sure in case it comes up at the next pub quiz.

        • +2
        • +5

I just tried paying for a dozen of eggs with my freshly made turd at Aldi…needless to say i too was quite surprised when the cashier rejected my preferred choice of payment…

        • @AJW:

I'm sad because I'm usually good with useless trivia and should have known about guano being turd , yet , expensive :(

        • I've used wombat shit as dice in a game of roulette once, so I believe you

    • +5

How many turds to the dollar?

      • +4

        turdy turds to the dollar

    • +9

      Hi all,

Was at Aldi tonight and paid for my groceries in cash which included some turd. As the cashier was counting the turds she picked out a NZ laid turd I had given her and said she couldn't take it. She gave the turd back and asked for another Australian laid turd.

I know it was a NZ turd but was quite surprised by her response. Has anyone had this experience happen to them?

      • +8

        NZ turd

        AKA: 'shut'

      • +1

this gave me such a good laugh. thank you muchly!

  • +9

    Best thread ever.

    • +1

better than the guy who made 130 odd accounts to save a few bucks from woolies?

  • +17

Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say.

    • +2

How many bees for 5 Schrute Bucks and 11 Stanley Nickels?

    • +3

Ahhhh… the good old days, when rich men would ride around in Zeppelins, dropping coins on everyone.

  • +83

I opened this thread to see the OP get flamed.

  • +18

Not even the Kiwis will accept that coin! NZ withdrew their similar-looking 20c piece from circulation, and it stopped being legal tender, in 2006.

    • -1

Ummm no they didn't! the 20 cent coin is still in circulation in NZ and is still legal tender

      • +2

They did, Giles is referring to the 20c coin that used to be similar in size to the aussie one.

      • +3

Yes, of course they still have a 20c piece — it just looks nothing like ours.

Once upon a time, A20c and NZ20c coins were the same (or very similar) size, shape and weight. It was easy to mistake one for the other if you didn't look closely.

In 2006, NZ withdrew their similar-looking 20c piece from circulation, and it stopped being legal tender. It was replaced with a 20c piece that was lighter and smaller.

20c coin Diameter Thickness Weight Edge
        AU (1966present) 28.65 mm <2.5 mm 11.3 g milled
        NZ (19672006) 28.58 mm 2.22 mm 11.3 g milled
        NZ (2006present) 21.75 mm 1.56 mm 4.0 g Spanish flower
  • +1

They also do not accept damaged australian notes or defaced currency at most places for future reference.

  • +2

Meh, I get kiwi coins in my change all the time, it just goes in the money box for the kids & the bank never bitches when it goes through the counting machine.

  • +7

    Why were you paying cash?.

Ozbargainers use their ING card at every opportunity

    • +4

This. I use my ING direct card at Aldi, even with the 0.5% credit card surcharge, I am still ahead than if I had used cash/eftpos.

      • Not after September…

    • +2

I'm guessing he stole it from the kids money box

  • +6

    500 dollarydoos

    • +2

found the American with da VPN

  • +3

Incidentally my banks won't accept NZ coins as well!

  • +2

Mate. You are a fool! What else can I say? Trying paying in Chinese Yuan next time.

  • +1

    Is this a serious question?

  • +4

I'm gonna go the Lebanese bakery down the rd and pay with Lebanese Pounds LPB. I hope they will accept it.

    • +13

I know a bit of first aid.

    • +38

I reckon they will. They probably knead the dough.

      • My god. One day I hope to be this fast.

  • +2

    💩

  • +37

My local Aldi told me they wouldnt accept Monopoly Money.

    • +5

      ….the cheek of 'em!

    • +2

Are you sure they were genuine Monopoly money, not the cheap knockoff?

    • What if you offered a "get out of jail free" card along with the Monopoly money..It might sweeten the deal and Aldi might change their minds.

  • +2

Deposited some loose change in CBA's coin machine. It returned couple of NZ coins.

    • Funny enough the last I did that it reset the machine after counting the coins for 5 minutes and returned the lot down the chute.

    • New 20 cent coins are slightly different to the old ones from what I remember, not 1:1 like old days.

  • +1

They don't accept fake Australian $50 notes either.

I know it was a NZ coin fake but was quite surprised by her response.

May have something to do with the German superiority complex.

  • +2

LOL. Wrong Country mate. Why would they take it?

  • +11

Not sure if op is trolling

  • +6

This cashier deserves a pay rise and I would hire them if I owned a cash based business. I have heard of so much dodginess at the moment now where people come in faking change that they received.

  • -4

when i was in NZ, they accepted payment in AUD which was quite handy.

    • +4

I call BS, I visit NZ 4-5 times a year and they have never accepted aus money when I accidently include some in change

    • +1

Some tourist places will accept both, but only as a convenience to you. Virgin airline allows dual currency payment too, and any ozbargainer knows to use the cheaper currency.
