  • Does anyone know how much it costs to unlock this phone?

    • +1

Free unlock from Optus (Requires calling them)

      • is it only this handset or will it work for Alcatel Pop 4 5" which was recently on sale at Target?

      • Which phone number are you guys using for free unlock? I always thought for Optus the rule was:
        Less than 6 Months = $80
        Greater than 6 Months = $25
And only if it was purchased pre Sept 2012 it's free?

I've got a Nokia from 2013 that I need an unlock code for and I got told it'd be $25 for the code.

A pity you cant catch em all! with this phone.

Microsoft is getting out of the mobile business, there will be a clearance on all old stock soon.

    • This is not true.

    • Incorrect. They did exit the MANUFACTURING of mobile phones though

For those that do not follow the tech media and just follow the tabloids and mainstream press who sensationalize stuff:-

"We are focusing our phone efforts where we have differentiation — with enterprises that value security, manageability and our Continuum capability, and consumers who value the same," says Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in a statement. "We will continue to innovate across devices and on our cloud services across all mobile platforms."

"We're scaling back, but we're not out!" admits Terry Myerson, Microsoft's head of Windows and devices, in an internal email.

Having used Windows Mobile 8.1, and now 10, for the past 18 months on a 640 and 735 I must say I am pretty much over it… time to move on. They are great phones if you want something simple and cheap, but the day to day grind of using even something basic like Facebook Messenger will slowly drag you down.

I would get a cheap Chinadroid over a Windows phone if I was buying today.

Edit: That said the Windows phone has proven perfect for my mother, and I shall probably pass on my 735 to her.

    • +4

It has been perfect for myself. I have used an iPhone and multiple Androids. WP 8.1 and now 10 has been great so far.

I just get annoyed with the limitations of sending video clips in Messenger, though WhatsApp is a bit better, and that when coming back in to apps after multitasking it very often forgets where you were and puts you back to the start. Or going back in to Spotify app it frequently takes ages to resume, while the iOS and Android versions are straight in.

That said Skype seems to work better on Windows Phone than it does on Android. Also OneDrive integration works well, and given we get 1TB from having Office thats been quite useful. So it has its positives, but next phone for me will be Android again… I would go back to iOS but not spending that sort of money on a phone.

        • Yeah, I agree with those niggles with WP. But overall they are not show stoppers for me. iOS certainly too bloody expensive for sure. With Android you need to get lucky with good price on some good hardware like xiaomi etc. If at all surface phones come out, I will surely get one.

    • Been using 1020 for a while and love it. No stupid games, excellent camera.

    • Is there a W10 update available for the Lumia 640. If not, will there ever be you think in Australia?

      • You need to install the Update Advisor app from the Windows store first, the check for updates thing in settings does not seem to check for the 10 update for some reason.

      • +2

Yes it is, I have one and updated it last week.

      • +2

You will need to download Windows Insider from the Store then you will be able to install Windows Mobile 10.

      I've run a 520, 630, 735 and most recently a 930. Still have the 735 and 930.
As an OS, they are brilliant. Absolutely fantastic machines too (except my 930- I got a dud).
But you're right and I agree. I've just bought a $60 alcatel pop ahead of travelling overseas and haven't looked back. Next phone will be a chinadroid after this one gets replaced.
I gave it everything I had. And truly wish the OS had more support- from everyone.

I'm confused, they will pay me to take this steaming pile? No deal, double it at I'll think about it.

    • +3

      Thanks for your unhelpful post.

      • +3

Don't buy it then Buzzl1ght and move on, no one cares.

        • -3

I'm sorry that my comment didn't make it clear that in my opinion this phone is an awful piece of technology that will leave the buyer frustrated and regretting they spent their hard earned cash. It seems you pair don't care for much more than insulting people. Blah, blah, blah! Stop being a knob head. Move on, no one cares.

          @Buzzl1ght:

I'm a bit confused…….. Who is insulting who, and being a knob head?

        • -2

@jackspratt: Just looking through these two clowns past messages, My last comment to them was a copy and past of their past replies to other ozbarginers. They tend to insult people.

Have been using a Lumia 929 (US 930) for 2 1/2 years and it is a higher end device so has no issues doing everything I want it to as an IT Engineer.

Main apps all work very fast and more available nowadays and much easier to use than an Android based device for email, phone, camera, txt msg & cloud storage. Helps it all works seamlessly with my work PC and home PC for OneDrive etc.
Bonus that it has a 20MP camera with OIS

It all personal preference but "bang for buck" better than Apple or Samsung etc. Only cheap Android devices can compete.

Replacing it shortly as I smashed the screen and likely getting a 950 from HK for under $350

    • Is that $350 hkd?? Where from?

      • Was AU$331 + shipping when I looked last but now out of stock. Android-Enjoyed

650 also out of stock for a few weeks as was looking at that.
550 camera not good enough for what I want or would get one for $120

950 XL is an awesome phone but I won't spend over AU$500 on ANY phone as a waste for something that lasts a short time and easily broken. $517 at the moment on AE - https://www.android-enjoyed.com/microsoft-lumia-950-xl-dual-…

  • Symbian S60 is better than this.

Price beat from West Ryde Officeworks. Plenty in stock there

    • +1

and just got it unlocked through optus for free

      • Too good. I'll try to find stock in Canberra.

        • Try to visit a Officeworks store and see if they will price match it.

        • +1

@Mr Rort: Just price matched/beat at Tuggeranong Officeworks for $94.05 but I think there was only one left after I got one

        • @Mogonite: Thanks. Looks like I may go north at Belco.

      • +1

How did you get it unlocked. I have yet to succeed

      • How? Through online chat after seeing you were a long loyal Optus customer?

        • +1

through online chat. and while i am an optus customer, definitely not long nor loyal. I signed up for a 24 month postpaid plan last september after being with telstra for many a year

These have been $99 for ages. At one point target were even clearing them for $49. It's great hardware for the money, if you are happy to live with a Windows phone. If care about apps and want to catch Pikachu then this phone is probably not a good choice for you. :)

    Optus chat will unlock them.

6 in stock KMart New Town Tas. None in Officeworks. Cheers for the post, got one for a friend. They are a great phone, but not if you use apps.

  • Apparently you can play Pokémon on Windows phone now. Lol
