My wife and I will be going to Vietnam for a total of 31 days. I havent decided if we will be getting a visa through the embassy or VOA yet.

Does anyone know whether or not we will have to pay for a three month visa or can we get away with a one month (30 day) visa?

    • Hello Sir,

    • I think the overstay fine is $25USD

  • which bank provides the Vietnam Visa?

  • +1
    • Cheaper everywhere (http://www.vietnamvisapro.net/ - used them recently, everything went smooth). Also remember that this is only an approval letter (you need this) and you will pay for the actual visa at the airport (probably 25USD - bring cash).

What happens if the VOA is refused at the airport? Do they refuse use entry and return us home?
Will you cover any loss for flights etc if that happens?

    • Hello,

      Thanks for your question.

We would like to inform that once you receive a letter from us, I am sure you will get into Vietnam. If the Embassy Department refuses you, they did not agree to process visa for you right from the start.

Please do not worry, if there are any problems occur, please contact us by email: [email protected]. We will solve for you immediately.

    • Once you have done it once you will realise that it is 'a piece of cake'. There are facilitators at the VOA queuing point, and they bend over backwards to assist passengers. It is amazing the basic things that people neglect to do. Some have no photos, no VOA letter etc. and all of the passengers seem to get in (albeit with some messing around). I always get a seat on the plane near the front and beat everyone off the plane. Of course there could be other aircraft landing, but my VOA times have never been more than 1 hour, and usually 10 - 20 minutes.

  • Why would I use one of these services when I can apply to the embassy/consulate? Is it cheaper?

    • +2

it is both - cheaper and easier.

      • +1

Interesting, thank you. My family has always applied to the consulate directly in Sydney. Just did some research on VOAs, seems legit enough.

Depends on your preference. I prefer going the Embassy route as it's just done and dusted. The last thing I want to do is wait at the airport for it to be processed which, depending on how many people arrive at the same time, could be anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours.

It's not much cheaper either, you probably save about $20 depending on the currency fluctuations.

But I can see why people do VOA. It's purely personal preference.

Melbourne doesn't have an embassy so we have to mail our passports.
Obviously need to pay registered and insurance both ways etc.

    • +1

I'm curious as well. My friend has always applied via the consulate direct. $75 and you get your visa labeled in your passport.

    • Actually I tried one of these travel agent visa application services for Vietnam, I paid for express and the turn around time is 1 business day. If you go through embassy you may have to leave your passport there. Personal preference, but I dont like leaving my passport overnight with a random stranger.

  • How is this so cheap? I've done it several times through the embassy and it's cost around $80-90AUD each time (single entry). With this even if you have to pay the stamping fee on arrival the total cost works out to be around $60AUD which is significantly cheaper than what I've previously paid.

    What's the catch?

There's no catch as such. The price of the Visa recently went down from $US45 to $US25. I'd imagine the price at the Embassy has similarly fallen (I haven't asked them so someone may know).

Visa on Arrival (VOA) letters are commonly done. The main difference is how it's processed.

With the Embassy, the passport is left with them for a few days, they process the visa and give it back to you. Once you arrive at the airport you can go straight through customs.

With the VOA an agent gets the letter prepared (I have no idea what this really does). When you arrive in Vietnam, you need to apply for the visa on arrival, wait for it to be processed and then you can go through customs. The catch here is that depending on how many people are also requesting the visa, it may take a while.

      It's really just personal preference.

      • Thanks for the clarification.

    • I didnt plan anything and got the visa on arrival for 30USD then might have paid stamp duty and the whole process took about 15 minutes then I was in the country

Just for information, the Sydney consulate office said AUD85 for single entry tourist visa.

    • Good to know. I guess they haven't dropped their prices then.

As someone who just went to Vietnam, I'd just like to throw in my 2 cents.
I got my visa through the consulate. Went in person to apply and pick up. I did this because people said there are long lines to get the Visa if you do the Visa at the airport, and there's an element of uncertainty.

But when I got off the plane in Hanoi, the visa desk is right in front of the immigration check point. No lines, 2 staff and 1 traveller. Compared to the line at the sydney consulate, I would have definitely just gotten the Visa after landing.

Also Vietnam was quite disappointing. It makes a cheap holiday, but it's cheap in the same way Kmart shoes are cheap.

    • Vietnam was an amazing place. My favourite of SEA. The place is what you make of it I guess. But for me the food was amazing, the people friendly and the sites were fantastic.

  • Hello, the Australian Vietnamese embassy website says that your service is "not legitimate", could you please clarify? http://vietnamembassy.org.au/thu-tuc-cho-cong-dan-Viet-Nam-v…

  • Personally I believe this co. to be legit., Dunno why so many people get 'up in arms' whenever a Vietnam Visa company makes an offer on Ozbargain. Also remember that English is not their first language!
