American Express Velocity Escape - 7,500 Velocity Points When You Spend $300 ($0 Annual Fee)

110

Receive 7,500 bonus Velocity Points when you apply via the generic AMEX link, or 15,000 bonus Velocity points when you apply with a referral.

While there are many other AMEX card offers out there at the moment, this card stands out with a $0 ongoing annual fee (as opposed to annual fee waived), so is a good alternative for those who missed out on the recent AMEX Platinum Edge annual fee waiver deal - it could be a good card to keep for the long haul (to take advantage of the excellent AMEX statement credit offers) without worrying about paying an ongoing annual fee.

It has an annual income requirement of just $40k per annum (lower than a number of other AMEX-issued cards currently on offer), a low spend requirement of just $300, and there is no ‘points cap’ - i.e. there is no monthly or annual limit to the number of Velocity Points you can earn with this card.

In addition, the card offers the following:

• Earn 2 Velocity Points per dollar spent with Virgin Australia
• Earn 1 Velocity Point per dollar spent on all other purchases
• 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months (A one-off credit plan establishment fee of 1% applies))
• Free supplementary card holder

For those who may be interested in the card, but usually only collect points with Qantas, the Velocity reward program is known for excellent domestic award flight availability. It also offers fares at more competitive points redemption rates and taxes when compared to Qantas, so the points are worth collecting. Below are a few examples of routes you could choose to redeem your points on (I've included a comparison for Qantas, so you can see how they stack up):

• Sydney to Melbourne one way in Economy – 7800 points plus $21.11 taxes (Qantas: 8,000 points plus $34.18 taxes)
• Melbourne to Brisbane one way in Economy – 11800 points plus $21.47 taxes (Qantas: 12,000 points plus $33.86 taxes)
• Perth to Broome one way in Economy - 11800 points plus $23.88 taxes (Qantas: 12,000 points plus $51 taxes)

You could also choose to use your Velocity points for redemptions with Singapore Airlines, or to transfer your points to Krisflyer at a rate of 1.35 to 1 point (which allows you to book Singapore Airlines A380 Suites class!).

AMEX terms and conditions state that the offer is only available to new American Express Card Members, however if you currently hold another AMEX issued card and are tempted to apply for this one, I would encourage you to read through the forums and other AMEX card deals, as many others have commented on the lack of enforcement of this rule.

A desperate plug for referral points

  • they are doing the same for referral on the AMEX velocity platinum card with 100,000 points

    as per wiki https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

    • Not the same - that card comes with a $349 annual fee whilst this is $0 annual fee.

      • totally agree but i was just pointing out that the link is for all amex cards that have offers.

      • $349 for an extra 92500 points though. (102500 with referral.)
I booked a ticket to London for 77700 points. So seems worth it for $349 to me…

  • Wait, is this bonus points JUST FOR SPENDING or do I need to apply? Because I've already got one of those cards…?
    I've been a customer 12 months, I'd gladly take 7500 points

  • If you already have this or pretty much any other card, they all generally make you wait the full 365 days AFTER cancelling the previous one you had before you get the sign on bonus.

Anyone wanting one of these or any AMEX card would get twice the sign on bonus by using a referral link.

  • Can anyone suggest what is the current BEST Amex deal? I don't have an AMEX card, Im considering ditching the 28 degrees, and I would like to take advantage of the discounts that come on offer from time to time if you use your AMEX card, plus potentially additional warranty or travel cover but not that important. I like that this offer has NIL annual fee, but uncertain if any other benefit apart from a minimal amount of signup points.

The 'best' card deal depends on many variables: income / flying intention / spending and shopping habits etc. There's quite a lot of choice. You just need to do the research unfortunately. The more prestige the card (ie the more expensive), the better the add ons.

This one is the AMEX Velocity red card that is free which is a good card to keep in the long run. But, you don't really use an AMEX o/seas as the fees are too high. There are much better cards for that.

From a purely bonus points perspective, the best current deal is probably the Velocity Platinum (see referral wiki) which gives you 100,000 Velocity bonus points (which can also be converted to Krisflyer) and a return domestic airfare for a $349 annual fee. The Platinum Charge card (also in referral wiki) has the biggest sign on bonus (120,000 points which can be converted 1:1 to a number of airline schemes) but comes with a sizable $1200 annual fee. For both of these cards, you need to sign up with a referral link to get the full serve of bonus points.

As Anna10 mentioned, however, it really comes down to your spending habits and what you want to get out of the card.

I echo previous two posters' comments that "best" is really subjective, and based on your priorities. Plenty of good Amex info/deals by OzB members, all with different features, e.g. big sign-up bonuses, travel insurance, free flights etc.

I like that this offer has NIL annual fee, but uncertain if any other benefit apart from a minimal amount of signup points.

Actually, all AMEX fee-free cards still provide rewards! Unlike 28 degrees which does not, although it gives other benefits. (Essential even provides smartphone screen insurance).

If you intend to redeem flights with Virgin or Qantas, the points are useful.
My recent comment provides info on their cash-equivalent rewards, if you prefer that instead.

Used your referral and was just approved. Thanks OP.

Thanks very much. I'm up to my referral limit for July now, so have removed my individual link from the description - anyone still interested in applying, there are plenty of other cardholders in the referral wiki you can choose from!

      • No worries. So what do you actually get for referring people?

  • could someone please tell me if this card works with amex connect/amex offers?

    • Yes, it does.
