AmEx Qantas Ultimate Card - 50,000 Points + Free Flight - $450 Annual Fee

10

The Qantas American Express Ultimate Credit Card

This deal is strictly for those wanting to collect Qantas points as this card has one of the highest Qantas earn rates. If you spend alot on Qantas flights and at restaurants, the 3 points per $ spend is a great benefit. Yes, there are better AMEX cards for Velocity points and there is the Platinum Edge earning MR rewards points so you should by all means look at those cards if you are not interested in Qantas points. The other key benefit of this card is the bonus qantas points which is boosted if you apply through a referral as well as the FREE flight (similar to Plat Edge) as shown below.

BONUS QANTAS POINTS
Normal application: 50,000 (+2,500 after first spend on selected Qantas products and services)

Through referral: 77,500 (+2,500 after first spend on selected Qantas products and services)

Benefits
*3 Qantas points per $ spent at restaurants and with Qantas
*2 Qantas points per $ on other airlines, accommodation, major cruise and tour operators and spend in foreign currency
*1 Qantas point per $ everywhere else except for utilities and the ATO
*Free domestic return economy flight with Qantas each cardholder year (includes Perth to East Coast)
*Two entries into the American Express Sydney Airport Lounge per calendar year
*Travel and purchase protection insurances

They are also currently offering 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months (a one-off credit plan establishment fee of 1% applies to any balances transferred).

The $450 annual should be covered by the free flight and lounge passes or you could redeem the bonus points for atleast $500 in gift cards. Supplementary Cards are free.

Other standard terms
*Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product offered by American Express in the preceding 12 month period are ineligible for this offer (but there have been instances where current card holders have received the bonus points)
*Bonus Points allocated 8 to 10 weeks after you spend $1,500 on purchases on your new Card within the first 3 months of becoming a Card Member

This wouldn't be my pick of the current stable of AMEX high sign up bonus cards. Yes, it has a return domestic flight, but so do many other AMEX and bank issued cards at a much lower annual fee. Nor does it come with the Qantas lounge invites that are a standard offering with many other Qantas focused cards.

Finally, I'd disagree with the OP that this has one of the highest Qantas earn rates - the 1 point per dollar spend on many 'staple' spend categories (supermarkets etc) is not competitive, and means you're unlikely to earn significant ongoing points on your monthly spend unless you eat out very, very frequently.

    • If you're wining and dining clients, and flying on business all the time - then yes, this could make sense in terms of that - otherwise unlikely.

    $450 for 50k only? Pass.

    • 80k with referral

  • Good to see Perth get included in the free flight. But agreed, the points earn rate isn't that compelling
