AmEx Platinum Edge - $195 Annual Fee: Bonus 10,000 Points & Free Flight

1300

AMERICAN EXPRESS PLATINUM EDGE

I doubt there are many ozbargainers out there without one of these cards. They are brilliant for points earn at supermarkets & the low annual fee is easily offset by the free flight. - The free flight is with Virgin and is Basically a 'Saver' level fare. So wherever you see saver availability on the Virgin web site, you should be able to book that flight if it's an approved route. The flight includes baggage.

I will post the standard deal details, but I need to point out that where this deal shines is if the the applicant uses a referral link. Using a referral link increases the points bonus by 5000 & reduces the first year annual fee to $0 (fee has gone up to $195 since am 4 July) That is pretty much in line with the old priceline platinum edge, except I believe this is better as the points on offer are more (15,000 vs 13,500), and to trigger the bonus points, you don't have to spend at priceline (which was restrictive for many).
So if using the referral link, the referee will receive 30,000 points and you will receive the extra 5000 Points. (It is easy to set up a referral link and add it to the wiki once you have your card)

Any regular Ozbargainer will know of the value of Statement credits, and this card is a great way to take advantage of them. There are usually a slew every month, and then there's also shop small every year.
See below for some recent (albeit expired) examples.

Applied and approved using your referral link - thanks OP!

referral link approved as forum deal?

Here is another trick if you are new in this:
You can purchase gift cards from woolworths and coles for to be used on your petrol, myer, david jones, movies, etc. purchases. This way you still get 3 points per $ earn rate. :)

    • Mentioned further up ;)

  • Can I post my referral link here as well? Not sure. Please clarify it, thanks.

    • Nope. No referral solicitation is allowed. Mods will remove it.

    • @Lengyi3211

You can add your referral link to the bottom of the referral wiki for the particular card(s) you have.

      • Thanks, I'll do.

        Checked cannot do it anymore.

        • If the wiki is locked for editing just try again in 5 minutes or so, if you have problems adding your link just private message me it and I'll add it for you

        • @hamza23:

Ok, thanks, ill try it now.

        • @hamza23:
Please check, i am not sure if u do it correctly.

        • @Lengyi3211:

Bottom of the page (in the applicable section), not the top of the page.

        • @neil:

Thanks, can you please remove what I posted? Sorry about that I did not read instruction clearly. I'll do it later & make sure it in a correct way required. I don't want my account banned. Thanks heaps.

        • @Lengyi3211:

All good Neil fixed it up & I've put the link in for you now under the Platinum Edge wiki, I had to edit the wiki anyway.

        • @hamza23:
Thank you very much, or it will take me ages to figure it out :)

  • Do you need this exact card to create a referral link or any Amex (not a bank) Amex card?

    • Any Amex-issued card I believe.

      • Foe Amex Velocity I can only generate one link for Velocity, the referred person can only use that or change to an Escape, not platinum edge :(

  • Thanks OP..just cancelled my Velocity Platinum Amex from the previous 110,000 point bonus signup and free flight…before the start of the new year. Just signed up the wife for this one :)

  • Great card. Enjoy it while it lasts. Surely with new rules on credit card merchant fees coming into effect (not sure exactly when), the loyalty program will change as well.

    • The cap on the surcharges doesn't apply to direct AMEX issued cards such as this because they don't go through the banks as an intermediary. However, it applies to any card issued by a bank, whether AMEX, Visa or Mastercard (and regardless of whether debit or credit card).

If I was to speculate though, I can imagine that the points earn may decrease just on the basis of decreased competition though.

  • thanks OP, just used your referral link… fingers crossed :~)

    • Thanks heaps! Hope you get approved. It's a really great card even with the annual fee. Love mine! :-)

      • I used ur referral n got approved this morning..happy points….thanks…

      • i've been looking at various options for a little while now, i'm a velocity member so been looking at the velocity specific stuff but from what i read earlier (didnt read too far into it) the amex points to velocity points are 1:1 which is a hell of a lot better than im getting on my current commbank rewards mastercard/amex (2:1)
biggest issue will be my gigantic mess of loans (investment properties etc) but hopefully won't have too many issues getting approval, ill try to remember to let you know if it goes through! :D

        • If you transfer to velocity during selected times you can also get 10-15% bonus points on transfer from Amex to Velocity so Amex points are effectively 1:1.15 (as long as you can be flexible on transfer dates).

        • @brettd: yeah i've made good use of those promos in the past :)

      • approved and on it's way, according to the email i just got!

  • +1

On the balance of it, the newer ANZ Adventures card seems like a better deal…fee is marginally higher but no forex fees and the fact that it doesn't have the trouble of Amex acceptance (it's a visa/amex pair), plus 2 VA lounge passes gives it the edge overall.

    • The number of routes available for the free flight is also better. ANZ includes Melbourne to Darwin/Cairns/Hamilton Island for example, where Platinum Edge doesn't. I think ANZ know it's a good deal though - no sign up bonuses at all.

    • +1

I would still favour the Edge. The flight with ANZ card might have more destinations available but I believe I read it can only be redeemed by the account holder. Edge allows you to redeem it for anyone.

The points earn on the Edge is far superior to the ANZ adventures card. Amex spend on the ANZ gets 2 points per dollar but transfer rate to Velocity is 2:1 so for every dollar spent on Amex you get 1 Velocity point.

I can get 4 Velocity points per dollar at a Supermarket if I become local champion so if Velocity points was my transfer goal I effectively can get up to 4 times as many points per dollar with the Edge. Of course, that isn't all purchases on the card but it can be used wisely and applied to a lot more than just supermarket purchases.

The only downside with the Edge card is you still need a Visa card for places not accepting Amex.

    • I'll consider getting this card as well, for the free flight and visa Inc.

But the points you earn are worth 1/3 of the points earnt on the Platinum Edge (e.g. Converting to krisflyer is 1:1 with platinum, adventure it's 3:1) and the comp flight you book has to be 60 days in advance.

    • +3

The guys above me have basically summed up the shortcomings of the ANZ card, however, I would like to add.. why don't you just get both? They're both really good cards, and if you know you're going to be able to use the free flight on the ANZ (I say this due to the more restrictive conditions) then I would agree that ignoring the specific points earn, the ANZ is probably better. This is definitely the case if you make a lot of overseas transactions where you essentially "save" 2-3% per transaction. So yes, the points earn rate is lower, but you're saving it upfront by not having to pay extra for it.

      In summary:

      • Overseas transactions: ANZ > Plat Edge
      • Free Flight: Plat Edge >> ANZ - I know ANZ includes more destinations, however, domestic flying by nature is more impulsive, so I think the 60 day advance booking period is quite a significant limitation. In addition to this, it can only be booked in the cardholder's name (Plat Edge can be anyone's name).
      • Lounge Passes: ANZ > Plat Edge
      • Points/Rewards: Plat Edge > ANZ - however, if you have a lot of overseas transactions, this may not be relevant.

Guys, remember credit cards are not all about points!

      • I just know one more card that has the foreign transaction fee waived: ANZ Adventures card. I only know Citibank, Bankwest Qantas Platinum, Coles Reward and 28 Degree cards before.

        • Cards that waive foreign transaction fees:

          • Coles Mastercard Rewards ($89 Annual Fee, FlyBuys points, 2 years Price Protection)
          • All the Bankwest "Platinum" Cards (Qantas/More/Zero - $160/$130/$0 - Travel Insurance, Rewards Points on the Qantas & More cards)
          • Coles Reloadable Mastercard ($10 "card fee", foreign transactions waived only until 31 Dec 2016 - technically not a Credit Card)
          • 28 Degrees ($0 annual fee, popular for 6 months Price Protection too)
          • ANZ Travel Card ($225 annual fee, Free Flight, Rewards Points)
          • Citibank Plus Transaction Account (Debit Card - $0 annual fee, good for withdrawing money overseas)
          • I think I might be missing one..?
        • @illumination:

Thanks so much for the information. I only look at cards that can earn points. You might missing one card which is not available and invite-only and I am using this card: BankWest World MasterCard, you can earn 0.66 pts / $1

        • @divious: Ah that wasn't the card I had in mind and I kinda forgot about that not very well known card!

Oh you're using it? So you got an invitation to apply?

        • +1

          @illumination:

Actually, you can email or call them to ask for the card (I called them, did not get the invitation) if you are holding the Platinum card and have a limit of $12,000 or over. Then, they will send you the variation form, you sign for it and they will upgrade your card to the World card, the annual fee is $220 though.

        • @divious:

I have the Bankwest World Mastercard and use it mainly for overseas transactions. I decided to switch to ANZ Adventures Card based on the comments above as Bankwest changed their card policies yesterday from 55 days to 44 days interest free and increased the points required for redemption. For eg $50 gift card requires 18,500 points via Bankwest vs 11,115 points on ANZ.

Will be using ANZ rewards for overseas transaction and Amex Plat Edge for local transactions. :)

Amex confuse me. I got approved 8 months ago for an essentials card $2k limit. Without a job for a couple of months..

I get a solid paying job soon after, and they wont put my limit up.

Apply for this card and get pre-approved pending payslips.

    *place is ran by monkeys!!

  • I have this card from CPA. How do I redeem the free flight?

    • +1

Find the 'saver' flights you want to book, and call AMEX concierge.

      Took me 6 minutes.

      • +1

As above. The phone number is on the reverse side of your card.

    • +1

Call the number on the back of your card between 8am-6pm Mon-Fri Sydney time (it might be only open 9am, sorry can't remember). From personal experience, there is hardly any wait time and the reps are really helpful.

edit: Sorry didn't realise this had been answered. At time of posting, your comment was the last on page 1.

  • Can anyone tell me how do I find out if I've signed up with the referral link? Does it say anywhere in the application process?

    • Anyone?

      • If you've already signed up I'm not sure but you can tell during sign up as the first page you go to will have different offer details (i.e. will list 15,000 bonus points instead of 10,000).

        • Ok, cheers brettd

    • Maybe go into your Browser's history & then backtrack to when you applied & see what the application page says? If it states, 15000 points, then you hit a referral link. ;-)

  • Any idea how many payslip you need to show for approval?

    • It was a while ago that I applied for mine, but I can't recall showing payslips. I could very well be wrong. I can remember that it was a hell of a lot easier than the hoops I had to jump through to get my City Platinum card the other day.
Pretty sure Amex uses Veda for their credit checks (somebody might be able to confirm that?). Also got an idea that you can get a free Veda credit score? - I'm signed up for Veda (around $100 yearly) so get a score update monthly.

      • cool..I just applied and got approved in 60 secs.

    • I think it was 3 payslips or the most recent notice of assessment from the ATO.

    • I just did it and didn't have to show them anything. shrug

    • When i got approved for the amex essentials card, they didn't ask for any proof of i.d or income. 8 or so months ago!!

This time i had to supply payslips for this card, they possibly may be doing i.d and pay slips now .As I assume it was a gold mine for fraudsters.

      P.S
(I sent them 2 months worth of slips)

  • Very complicated rule here, will have to learn more.

  • How long does it take for referral points to come in

  • +1

I have the Priceline card, they sent a letter saying we will only get 1 point per dollar at Priceline after this month.
MODS: new referrals links have come out for the amex cards. I have links listed on the referral page, can we update them to the new links. The bonuses have increased.

    • Yep I got the same letter. My partner got the same letter, however she also got given "1500 MR points a token of appreciation of your membership with the Priceline sister Club… discrimination!!

    • Looks like AMEX are cutting ties with Priceline, I got the same letter too. Priceline is overpriced but 10 points in the $ was pretty good. Deliberately got my prescriptions etc there because of it

  • So do you get a free flight each year or just the first ?

    • +1

      Every year

      • Cheers… this looks like a good replacement for our NAB Choice Package cards (Qantas Amex/Mastercard combo) which cost us $395/y for the package. I'd much prefer Velocity points over QFF any day. The only problem with this is that I'd be down a Mastercard for smaller shops… but then there's always 28 Degrees!

        • Yep but your 28 Degrees doesn't earn you points ;)
However, it's still better to use your 28 Degrees rather than pay a 3% surcharge*

*Surcharges can be worth paying depending on how much the surcharge is. It's really down to how much you value a point which is ultimately a function of how you plan to use it.

        • @illumination:

True… what's the best Mastercard for Velocity points?

        • @yanman: I have this card to collect points on, really there's not that many places nowadays that don't accept it. Then for places that don't accept it and for any overseas shopping I have a BankWest platinum MasterCard that has no overseas transactions fees. I find this combination is great.

        • @yanman: Probably this one. It's not a very popular or well known card but AFAIK this has the best earn rate for Velocity points of any Mastercard/Visa.

  • Is this a good card for paypal purchases? I use paypal a lot (70k+ a year) and need to find a card that gives good points for paypal purchases. I currently have an ANZ Visa/Amex black and use the Amex side but the yearly fee is coming up and want to cancel and get a new card before they slug me with the $425 fee. I'm thinking this card or the NAB card that is offering 75k points at the moment with an Amex/visa.

    • The bonus points won't help you because any transaction that goes through PayPal, even if it's in one of the bonus points categories doesn't give you extra points (because it's "routed" via PayPal")

It's still a good card overall, but specifically for PayPal points earn? You can probably find a card with a slightly better base earn rate, but just keep in mind that the points you earn through that card will not be flexible points like the Membership Rewards points you earn through this card.

      • Thanks, might go with the NAB offer for now

    • -1

you will get 1 point per dollar spent through paypal. Do you get any extra points with NAB card for paypal transactions?

      • Yes, I'll get 1.5 points with PayPal using the Amex side of the cards

  • I got this from the referral link on my account.

"While your Card isn't available as part of our referral program, you can still refer your friends and family. Refer your friends by 31 July 2016 and for each friend who applies using your referral link by 15 August 2016 and is approved, you will earn 30,000 Bonus Points. You can earn up to 200,000 points in July by referring friends.
They receive 15,000 Membership Rewards points if they are approved for a American Express® Platinum Edge Credit Card and spend $550 in their first 2 months of Card Membership"

They didn't mention about the free annual fee though….
Hmmm… OP can you please confirm that this is the case for all accounts?

    Thank you

    • Don't worry about this.

Found the details once I click my own referral link.

      Great deal! Thanks OP

  • Does anyone know if we can get 3 pts or 1 pts on this website: https://everydaygiftcards.com.au/gift-cards/wish-gift-cards

If yes, that is great to combine 5% discount from cash reward + 3 pts. If I buy the gift card at Woolies, then I can only get 3 pts, not 5%.

    • I purchase Wish egift cards through Entertainment Book which uses the same website and I get the 3 points per dollar in addition to the 5% off.

One handy thing which I only recently discovered is the Android Woolworths Money app which makes keeping a track of the gift card numbers and balances super easy!

      • Thanks for the information. I didn't know that the Entertainment Book also sells Wish Card with 5% discount, I always buy from Cash Reward. I am using the same Woolworths Money app on my iPhone, it's pretty cool and very convenient.

    • I always get big w gift card 7.5% & 8% off then get points & discounts too. I go to big w shop to exchange all the big w gift cards into wishes gift cards then spend it everywhere or share it with friends for the same discount I had.

  • I have Amex velocity card that I applied last June and the term says "you can't have owned an AmEx card in the last 12 months" so if I'm had it for more than year will I be able to apply this card ?

    • +1

You will be fine to apply and get the points. You can have 2 American express issued cards at the same time and I've never had an issue getting all bonus points offered. Over the past 12 months I have had 3 different cards and had no problem with receiving any bonus points.

      • so did you have 2 amex cards when u applied for the the new card? did you get the bonus signup points?

        • I only had the velocity platinum when I applied for the edge. No trouble with points. I have read of people who had 2 AMEX credit cards and applied for another getting calls to either cancel existing card or the application. Those who cancelled an existing card still received the bonus points

        • @pickme: thank you!

        • @bkx3virgin: Just to let you know, myself and my partner are two examples of those who had held an AMEX prior to applying for a second AMEX which offered bonus points, yet we still got the bonus points despite that clause.

    • I too got the Velocity Platinum AMEX last year and I just applied for this one and got approved. There is a section in the application where they ask you if you already have a non-bank issued AMEX and to enter the card number, which I did. So all good! Apply away! You should be fine.

      • This doesnt seem like a very attractive offer with so few points though. Just cancelled my velocity platinum and wanting another amex

        • If you sign up via a referral you get the first year's fee waived. Just wait for the points to transfer to your velocity account, use up your free flights and then cancel the card if you like. Pretty sweet deal. 3pts per $1 spent at supermarkets and petrol stations is pretty sweet too.

        • 3pts per $1 spent at supermarkets only sorry, not petrol stations.

        • @wavesgreen:

But not as great as amex platinum velocity
          Or nab velocity even

        • @zrach: So? ** shrug ** It's free points. I've already banked (and redeemed) 170,000+ points just from the sign-up bonuses for the AMEX Velocity Platinum and the NAB Velocity cardset too and I can add another 15,000 here (maybe with more referral points to come) plus a set of flights. All for nothing. Sign up, cancel, rinse, repeat. It's the game we play. And again, this card is hard to beat if you are going to keep it to earn points on everyday spends like groceries.

        • @wavesgreen: how many points are required to get say a BP/Caltex/Shell $100 petrol card? I'm curious to know the per point value for when trading these free AMEX Plat Edge card points in on petrol card credit….because as we know, trading in for cash account credit is silly and not as valuable as petrol card credit. I get about $400 a year of free petrol from points trade in on my CBA Platinum mastercard at the moment.

        • Welp it looks like AMEX have changed the sign-up conditions overnight (the OzBargain Effect!) and now you DON'T get the first years fee waived when you apply via referral. Gotta pay $195.

      • so did you tick "yes" where they asked if you had another amex card?

        thanks!

        • Yes. And then you enter your exisiting AMEX card number. I mean, they know I have one anyway. :D

  • Can you do a balance transfer only when you apply, or can you do one later on?
