I am really liking this phone so far.

I asked the seller to send it with the default rom so as expected the first setup was in Chinese which I fumbled my way through. I tried to unlock the boot loader using these instructions: http://forum.miui.co.in/forum/mi-devices/redmi-note-3/tutori… however it failed and soft bricked the device.

To recover from the soft brick (which was really easy) I had to install the global miui rom which is the rom I think this seller has put on unless requested otherwise. I had planned to go directly to cyanogenmod but miui is actually not bad once you replace the stock launcher.

Out of interest I ran AnTuTu benchmark and got a score of 77853. My old phone (LG G3 3gb) got 61513. There is a noticeable performance increase using the Redmi.

    Amazing value for money.

  • Sorry if this is really dumb, but can anyone please explain this to me? - (from the site)

    1. Does it have Google Play and Multi-language?

Yes, it does. If you don’t ask for factory firmware, we need to open the box and install official global firmware. This firmware can’t be updated.Kindly remind that incomplete translation cannot be avoided no matter official or unoffical ROM.

So…. should I request them open it or not? I gather I want to be able to update it so factory firmware?

    • I got mine with the global miui ROM which is the default option. Keeping it simple phone is just like any regular android phone but super fast response. It is not sealed because they need to open and install. You could get someone from a phone repair place to install for you in oz if u prefer for extra cost

      • thanks

    • +2

Unfortunately it is just a bad explanation.

If you want the China/HK firmware you need to tell them. Otherwise, they will open the box install the Global firmware (ROM).

This Global Firmware (ROM) IS updateable, it updates to the latest Global ROM (MIUI Global 7.3 | Stable 7.3.6.0(LHOMIDD)) once you connect to the internet (OTA).

You don't have to flash it or do anything the Global firmware is installed and ready to go.

    • What the site says appears incorrect based on what people are reporting. If in doubt, just let them install the global ROM.

  • So I opted to have my box unopened keeping the china rom and intended to flash the global stable rom myself. Has anyone had any luck doing this? It's proving to be difficult..

    • Why the neg vote? Seriously..

  • I had asked for the Global ROM and looks like they have done it and already shipped my one. I got an email yesterday about the shipment. I chose the normal shipping (not dhl). Give it 2-3 weeks from now ?

    • +1

Even I received the shipped email but on Aliexpress web site it still said awaiting shipment, also normal shipping.

      • Waiting begins! must be just as bad as jd when it comes to shipping. JD actually surprised me when I did second order, phone was received in 8 days

I am using HTC One X at the moment as I sold my LG G3 (touch issues) and this HTC doesn't have 4g either -_-

        • Last time I ordered a cable from Aliexpress another seller it took around 3 weeks, not too bad actually but that one didn't take that long to ship.

        • @superforever: SO basically 3 weeks in minimum!!

        • +2

          @codename47:

Normally 3-4 weeks from China seller.

But this guy name is "Hong Kong Dreami China (Mainland) (Guangdong)" hope it is actually from Hong Kong may be a bit faster.

        • @superforever: I was so close to buy the mi4c 16gb one but then this same seller ran out of the white ones for 165 aud so didn't really buy that. I am glad I got this deal. I checked my mates 2gb version of note 3 and looked pretty nice

  • Dumb question.

Can I use any USB charger or do I have to use the supplied one?

    • USB chargers are still working…

    • Sorry, I mean plug thing, ipad/ipod charger plug, Samsung phone charger plug.

      • +1

Any charger is fine. Use 2amp if you want it to charge fast.

  • I am using both sim slots so I can't expand the memory. 32gb is plenty except when I am playing music in my car via bluetooth.

Will something like this work alright in the car? https://www.sandisk.com/home/mobile-device-storage/connect-w…

  • This is so confusing,

Ordered the dark grey one, received email with heading "payment successfully made" and the content of the email as follow:

"payment has been accepted for order xxxx,
Currently, your payment is 'Being Verified'. Payments are usually verified within 24 hours. After verification, the supplier will begin to process your order.
During this time, you are unable to do any operation on your order. "

When I go to my order it after login into my Aliexpress account and check on the order this is what it said

    "Status:
This order is awaiting your payment
    Reminder:
Without payment, this order will be cancelled after: 18days 11hours 50minutes 44seconds" and I have the option of click on "pay now" or "cancel order"

So I did my order go through or not? do I meant to click on "pay now"? in order for the seller to start dispatching my phone?

Btw, I did receive email from cash rewards tracking the purchase.

    • That's normal, it will change from processing in the next day or so. It's all paid for so just sit tight for now :)

      • Thanks, will sit back and wait :)

  • Ordered 22nd jun still processing

    • Same, 7 days 17 hours processing time remaining.

      • man maybe i shouldn't have paid for express postage

        • It will be faster after the processing wait period.

      • Mine was shipped today.

  • Has anyone managed to unlock the boot loader and install cyanogenmod?

    • I've applied to unlock the bootloader yesterday. Apparently it can take a while.

  • Hi,

I received this message from the seller - has anyone else received the same or similar?

Hi, we are going to process your order, sending you phone with Multi-language ROM to the address you registered.
For making international we are going to unpack the box, check the quality and put global firmware, if you want original-chinese unboxed package please note it.
And We will declare as MP4 Player with low value to avoid tax, but you should pay the tax if needed.
If you have any requirement, pls feel free to contact us.

    Slightly concerning..

    • That's their template of initial response, I simply replied that we don't need to hide it from the custom in Australia and I prefer the original ROM. Nothing to worry about and I think it's the common act for them to claim it as low value item to get pass some less generous custom in other countries.

      • -1

So, you received the original phone, sealed, with the Chinese ROM? Have you since loaded the global firmware?

        • Still on its way, but yes that's the idea. I won't worry about global firmware as I don't need language other than English and Chinese, and google play service can be easily installed through mi app store.

  • Damm it!!!
I ordered this while I was on holidays and Aliexpress have blocked my account for security reasons which they did not want to disclose via online chat just now.
I have to re-submit my drivers license and credit card scans and credit card statement for the unblocking process.
WTF, now I have missed out on a deal again!!

    • +2

I ordered this while I was on holidays

Were you overseas? Their system may have geolocated your IP address, and noticed someone tried to buy something with an Australian creditcard in a country which (presumably?) was not Australia. Assuming that is the case, are you sure you should be annoyed that a Chinese reseller refuses to sell products under those circumstances?

      Just guessing here…

  • Anyone having trouble with reading microSD card 64 GB and above, you need to format it to Fat32 for the phone to read.

  • Received from everbuying. Quite happy in the end with delivery speed with auspost. Phone seems fine.

  • Anyone still waiting for the order to process? I purchased 21/06/2016 & 7 days later it's still "Awaiting Shipment - Processing Time remaining: 3 days 6 hours 26 minutes", very frustrating as payment was cleared within on the 22/06/2016.

    • I would message them to find out what's happening

      • +1

I ended up taking this advice & within an hour it was scheduled to be picked up from their facility & then on picked up a few hours later.

        • Just messaged them too. Just in case. 7 days today.

    • I'm waiting. Ordered late night on 22/6.

    • Took exactly 7 days for mine to be sent, if it's within 10 days of their promised processing time, not much to complain about, but I reckon friendly reminding would speed it up a bit though.

  • +1

I have unlocked unofficially, installed TWRP, installed CM13 and have now moved for Resurrection Remix (too many bugs for me in CM13). So far so good. I'll report back if anyone is interested.

    • I'll be interested to know :) thanks in advance

      • I had some bugs with remix. The sim 1 kept dropping out. I have moved to krexus and so far so good. If you like stock Android I think this is going to be a great device. I didn't like miui much.

        • Oh damn. cynogen created sick roms for lenovo too but didn't work well.
I am now used to Miui as I had redmi note 2 before. Wouldnt mind changing though

        • @codename47: I reckon in no time at all CM13 will be perfect. I believe the Marshmellow MIUI comes out soon & once that happens they can steal bits to fix up CM13.

  • +1

    Received mine this morning.

There wasn't a choice to choose Australia as the default locale. I choose Malaysia instead.

Mui 7.3.2.0 android 5.1.1 lmy47v. Didn't request any other firmware from the seller. Haven't updated anything yet.

Looks like a great phone so far. I'm gonna wait an extra day or two before releasing the payment to the seller just in case it starts acting dodgy.

    • Did you pick the free shipping?
How long did delivery take after shipping?

      • I Chose DHL, left Hong Kong Tuesday evening, due to be delivered to me in Melbourne today

      • Sorry I meant when I first booted the phone it asked me where I was located, I just said Malaysia.

Yep I choose free shipping. Bought on the day of this post. Seller sent 2016-06-20 20:33. Received South East Melbourne yesterday morning. So about 9 days.

        • That's fast. Mine was sent on 16th and still not received 2 weeks after.

        • @mily: oh I'm surprised! Where are you located?

        • @Uncharted: Wollongong, don't know why it's this slow. Checked online just now, it was sent to oz on 20th, and only arrive oz on the 27th, so 7 days from Singapore to Australia, that's extremely slow considering yours arrived in 9 days.

  • "Successful departure from Warehouse" on 25June but still in transit and still not "Depart From Original Country"

    • did you use the Singapore post to check the status ?

      "beta.singpost.com/track-items"

      Date Short Description
      27/06/2016
Despatched to overseas (Country code: AU)
      25/06/2016
      Received from Customer

      • Thanks

It said despatched to overseas (country code: AU)

        • yeah same still. Not sure how accurate information it has.

        • 01/07/2016
Arrival at Destination Post (Country: AU)

          got this! hopefully next week

        • @codename47:

Same here "Arrival at Destination Post (Country: AU)"

          Ordered on 19June.

  • I got the phone this morning. It's Gold color

It came with the Screen protector and a TPU case. It has the global ROM already installed and a new update is ready to be installed .

So far- Looks great, and has fast processing specially while installing apps and switching between apps. No lag what so ever. Battery is around 44% mark and charging slowly with the USB port (PC).

    • +1

good to hear, the battery actually charges fairly quickly when plugged into the wall. I'm nearly two weeks in and the only issue has been unlocking the boot loader. ive been approved via applying and receiving an sms, but the app errors at 50% saying that my device isn't verified. so far getting help from xiaomi has been useless and not sure what else to do. there is an unofficial way but id rather not go down that road.

      • +2

I heard that because they have installed global ROM on a Chinese version phone that is why they couldn't verify it. You may have to install the chinese rom first.

        • interesting. I actually asked for the Chinese ROM when purchased and I updated to global stable myself (which was quite an effort). Might have to try reverting back to the Chinese ROM, Thanks.

        • +1

@PR0r: Guys, how is the 2GB version posted recently for 180 aud ? any good?

        • @codename47:
I personally wouldn't bother with it. An extra $40 will get you another gig totalling 3GB. If your budget can't quite stretch then it's still an excellent choice and value for money. I purchased the 3GB version for myself and wife and have no complaints. Such an amazing phone for the price.

        • +1

@PR0r: oh okay thanks for that.
I am using 3Gb Version from this deal and love it.
Friend had bought the 2gb version and he loves it too.
          I'd definitely prefer 3gb version

        • @codename47: you tried rooting yours yet?

        • @PR0r: not yet . Worth it ?

        • +1

          @codename47:
There's a few apps that I need root for. Sadly the bootloader needs to be unlocked first, which is a wait and quite an effort.

      • "…the app errors at 50% saying that my device isn't verified."

Yes we had this problem too. We upgraded to the dev ROM (instructions on the xiaomi site), then it worked fine. Had a few issues with getting Google Services on there after putting CM13 on (kept on rebooting) but now all seems good.

  • +1

Has anyone noticed static/hissing/crackling when using earphones? I've tried 3 sets of earphones and 1 pair of headphones. The headphones seem to be fine, with perhaps a tiny amount of hiss, but the earphones are horrid to use with audiobooks/podcasts/movies.

Not sure if my phone might be faulty.

(Everything sounds fine on my galaxy s3)

    • +1

      that's unusual.
I don't have any hissing sound what so ever, I use the Xiaomi Pistons.
Has any of your mate got the same phone? might be worth trying the same headphone on the other phone and see if it affects.

  • Got mine yesterday. Had to use an external tool to format my 64GB MicroSD to FAT32 so that the phone could recognise it (Windows can't format anything larger than 32GB to FAT32). Some minor issues so far:

    • The "about phone" menu option crashes the "settings"
    • There is an unlabelled button under "bluetooth" in the bluetooth menu. Anyone knows what it does?
    • I am having dropouts when streaming music with bluetooth (bluetooth audio). Anyone else had this issue? Are there solutions? Never had this with my previous phone.

    Generally stable and fast though.

    • Nevermind about my first 2 points above; turns out Nova Launcher does not play nice with MIUI. It breaks menus, and it also hides the "additional settings" menu option (which is a rather big issue). Nova probably also breaks the "use as wallpaper" option.

Would still be interested to hear whether people have issue with streaming audio through bluetooth however.

      • Bluetooth streaming works fine on both phones I ordered.

Is this the menu you are referring to?
        http://i.imgur.com/Hce2HOc.png

        • Turns out I had shortcut to an outdated menu, following restoring a backup of Nova Launcher. I should never have been able to see that "outdated" incomplete settings menu. It also explains the broken Bluetooth menu. If I go to settings through the app tray i see the proper MIUI menu.

Bluetooth streaming works, but cuts out every few minutes for 1-2 seconds.

        • @Make it so:
Have you tried streaming to a different device over Bluetooth to rule it out? Hope you get this sorted, don't forget to talk with the seller too, you may get a partial refund or able to send it back for replacement. Keep us posted as to how you get on if you take this road.

        • @PR0r: None of my previous phones had problems streaming to my car. But I won't bother the seller for a refund - it's not their fault. And it's not a major problem.

    • +1

If you put your sd card in and it won't mount, you'll need to format the card.

This is an easier way to format your 64gb card https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pMCKvIZOMc start at 6.22 on the video, its not in English but you can clearly see how to do it. Its so easy.

      • Thanks. I don't remember seeing that notification or being offered to format. But I'll keep it in mind. Got it working though.

  • anyone find an easy way to search this phone on aliexpress? I keep getting cases but no phones. I know this deal is ended and I want a 2nd one, so want to search them but come up empty. Spoke to customer service who told me to google it with aliexpress as last word. How clunky is that!!
